Calls from an Orlando phone number are a hoax! Don't give your Credit Card #!

I received a call this afternoon from an Orlando phone number, I didn't get to the phone in time so didn't speak with anyone.

I called the number back, the number is attached to someone's personal phone and they have a message on the phone that states that their number is being "ghosted" so that no one can tell where the call is being made from.

Apparantly, the call takes you through a series of questions and tells you that you have won a trip to Orlando, then a real person comes on and takes your credit card #.

If you know of someone that has done this or received a call, tell them it is a hoax and also report it to the phone company.

Hey,

The ghosted part is definatly scary, so this one is more of a scam then others but I just also wanted to warm other DISr's that there are legitmate companies that do the very same thing.

They cold call people (usually getting there name from a "contest", but no one ever wins) And annouce they've one a trip to "where ever" but when it comes to Canada it's usually is a trip to orlando as it's a popular place for us. (the big one going around now is they offer orlando and also add in 2 other places as well)

They then go through a whole thing giving you details, dates you can go... even the person's employee number. At the end thats when they state "so i'll just be needing your credit card now to just charge the taxes."

I know because I worked for one of this companies for exactly 4 hours, until the story unfolded and then I walked out. It's really sad as the phoners are trained to hype up the "winner" ("Oh, are you excited, your going to have so much fun etc) so the winner doesn't have a chance to see the whole picture.

And if the winner seems hesitant and wants more time, they tell them it's a time sensitive offer and if they don't accept right this second they will call the runner up.

Some people don't think it's a scam (I sure do!!) As they don't lie, they do give you a vacation for "free" minus flights, food, attraction tix etc But the "taxes" you pay to secure your prize costs way more then most mod/deluxe disney resorts would. And you stay someplace quite crappy and no where close to the attractions.

Sorry for the long post, but as as soon as I saw the details I knew the drill.

I bet 100% you'll get a call back from them very soon. They never leave messages, just put your number at the back of the pile.. they always get back around to you.

Sure, I just hope that it isn't against the rules of the board.

The number that came up was 1-407-888-44--
Of course when I saw a 407 number I thought it was Disney calling, was SO bummed out to find out it wasn't

I edited to take out the last two numbers of the phone number, it is someone's private residence and I don't think they need more people calling it other than the ones returning the calls.

We've had one of these kinds of calls before. I never believe you get something for nothing. The old "if it's too good to be true" really applies.

Just so everyone knows - if you win something you win it outright - there are no taxes to pay, no administration fees, no procession fees, no deposits and certainly no rush.

you have to love the tenacity of these sales people - they can make a strong willed person feel just for a second that maybe this is real. then you smack yourself in the head and hang up.

I've received a few calls and I try to keep these people on the line as long as possible so they can't call as many people as they can in one day.

with all the news reports on schemes like these it's hard to believe people still fall for it but I guess they do or else these schemers would stop.

the one i love and have received several times is the president of some African country emailing asking for your banking information so he can move 150 million out of the country before his government is over thrown. Of course he'll give you 10% for your trouble = 15 million but instead he empties your account.

OT~ One that we have been getting lately is from a phishing phoney paypal site saying our account was compromised, phoney receipts for phoney purchases, our cc had been used. It was all fake just a ruse to get us to log in from a fake link so they could attain our real log in info.

I have a suggestion for all those that are ready to provide a credit card #, bank account #, etc. to anyone that phones/emails them that they won a prize. PM me for my address, send me 50% of what you were going to send the caller and you will be 50% ahead with the same prize in the mail that the caller is going to give you - nothing.

Wow... this has me chuckling. I work at a CAA Travel Store, and a girl that I work with did the "survey" while at work, and "won the trip". Then, the real person came on and asked her for a credit card number. When she told them she didn't have one, they hung up without saying a word. We knew it was a scam, but played along with the survey.

Okay, how bizarre is this.....As I bring up this thread, the phone rings (next to laptop), and it is a blocked number with a recording saying "Congratulations, you have just won a free Las Vegas vacation, press 9 to find out more".

I love the comment about telling them you don't have a credit card and they hang up. It reminds me of whenever carpet cleaners call, I tell them I have hardwood floors. It ends that conversation.

I got a call this morning telling me I had won a carribean cruise hung up on them thinking about this thread. I'm not overly polite on the phone - what can I say!!

There is a website where you can actually type in the phone number and it will tell you who is calling - if someone else has reported it already. If it hasn't been reported yet, you can add the number to their database yourself.
