Calling all Vegetarians - What are your favorites, what where the biggest surprises?

What is everyone's favorite CS meal at MGM? We struggle everytime we are there. I've had bad experiences with the tabouleh wrap at ABC Commissary and I heard somewhere that the Vegetable Stir Fry has a beef base (anyone know if that's true?). The Vegetable Sandwich at Backlot Express was okay, but not great. Has anyone had anything that they would recommend?

Thanks fellow veggies!

I don't like CS at MGM. We really liked the pasta at Sci Fi (they made it vegie) and we had the artichoke dip (has dairy) and it was delicious. We always go to Prime Time Cafe--I usually have the stuffed peppers. Again, it has dairy.

Has anyone enjoyed the vegetarian option at Whispering Canyon? I've heard it's good.... I just sent my vegetarian friend there (along with her daughter and meat loving husband) because I wanted them to enjoy the environment. Please tell me it's good?????

and yes, the new veggie sandwich at the Plaza is pretty good......

Where is the plaza? I'm drawing a blank.

CJK, WCC isn't my favorite place. I tried it twice and it was good, but not great. The smoothie was wonderful. The nachos were so-so (we were on the dining plan and had an appetizer). Not a bad place, though, and if they like the antics hopefully they won't have the dud experiences that we had.

Wow that potato dish at SciFi sounds good!!!

Now, don't get too excited about the samosa, if they are the same as at F and W. I had read a review here, and was disappointed too. (I live in a city with a very large South Asian population and I eat Indian 2-3 times/week when I am home; my former place of work used to serve the best veggie samosas). The ones at F and W were very dried out and not really tasty, sorry to say!

i guess no samosas for DH and I :sad1: i wont waste my time.

Dh and I just had indian food this weekend! LOVE IT! i cant get enough of the Saag Paneer (sp?) and naan....oh my goodness my mouth is watering!

there is another site i check for menus- you all may be familiar with the site- but more menus cant hurt! kind of limited but still good to check out.....
http://www.luxurydisneyguide.com/disneymenus.htm

OT-- lets go FLYERS!

Anything BUT Saag paneer for me, after a bad incident involving projectile vomiting and a hotel room in Reading, UK (sorry!)

So many questions....

MGM CS - I don't anymore. The new flatbread place by the Backlot looks interesitng but it's not open when I go. I don't do the pepper at Prime Time due to the dairy; sometimes they are good, sometimes they give me overcooked carrots and beans  . That's why I tend to stick with Mama Melrose - they have that incredible tomato pesto with their bread, too

Plaza is the little place by the bakery/ice cream and next to the noodle station - I totally forgot about it until last year; got a last minute dinner res and dinner was good but not overly exciting

WCC - I don't know if they HAVE a veggie entree; the few times I've been they have special ordered something for me. Note that you can ask to sit by the fireplace if you dn't want to be involved in all the hoopla

San Angel - has a 'secret' veggie menu with 3-4 items - just ask your server! The sampler platter has two items - I prefer the one with a green chili sauce (sorry, don't know the names) and they cut down the dairy if you ask. I've been 3x - once a diner at the next table asked what I was eating, and it it was good - my response was, 'yes, I'm a little surprised!'. So it's an option if Epcot is busy and I need somewhere for dinner

Marrakesh is good too, although a little bland. But at least it's an option if I need one.

Tusker House - sorry to hear about that sandwich; that means that unless they revise some menus, there is not much choice in the entire park.... Guess I'll go join the herbivores on the savannah?

Any idea if San Angel will make any vegie items for the kids? Is the rice vegie now or does it still have chicken stock?

I'm really disappointed in the kid's offerings. Somehow I think my son is going to get very tired of mac/cheese.

Bavaria, when is your next trip? We always seem to miss each other.

Well, I may need to go in May just to get LisaS to try Raglan Road! :teeth:

I'd like to go for the whole month of May as I have a number of friends (both real and online buddies) going.... sigh.....

I may still get there in May if I try real hard.

Re the rice at San Angel - I think that there was rice on the veggie sampler plate, so they should be able to do it for a kids meal. But I agree with you - the kids meals are pretty unadventurous to begin with!

The only problem is that whenever I dine at San Angel I end up spending so much money on jewellry at the shop next door - this last visit there was a very subtle salesman who convinced me that I needed two more pendants even though he has already sold me at least half a dozen over the past few months!

So do we know that there isn't chicken in the rice any more or are we assuming? :teeth: If I eat there I'll make an ADR so I can make a note about being vegetarian.

What else is on the vegie sampler plate? I wish that the vegie menu was on Allearsnet so that I could take a look. Does anyone know if it's posted anywhere else?

I'm not a vegetarian, but every trip I won't miss lunch at the Tangierine Cafe in Morocco. I love their vegetarian platter!!

T&B, if there was chicken in the rice on the veggie plate I would have had a bad night - that didn't happen.

I don't really know Mexican food - whenever I ask my colleagues to go for Mexican, they refer me to Taco Bell! :rotfl2: (one visit, never again)

It was a flat thing in green chili sauce with some cheese and rice. The other was maybe a burrito with beans and was rather heavy, in what I believe is the red sauce. Then some rice on the plate. Sorry, it's so dark in San Angel and combined with my lack of Mexican expreeince, that's all I can describe! Maybe Forever42 can chime in here and give us a better description...

Next time I would order two of the green things and none of the bean thing.

I managed to find a description of the two vegetarian offerings at San Angel Inn. DH and I both ordered the "Plato Combinacion" and enjoyed it. There was way more cheese on the plate than I wanted to eat so I concentrated more on the other things on the plate. As bavaria already said, it's so dark in there it's hard to know what you're eating, but it tasted good, and we washed it down with a nice margarita!

Edited to add: I have no idea how old this info is. The items are the same as I remember seeing on the vegetarian menu when we were there in January but the prices may be out of date.

Vegetarian Menu

Ensalata de Vegetales - Selected lettuce, tomatoes, Jicama, Fresh Zucchini, Carrots, Fresh Radish, red bell peppers, Avocado, onions and house dressing $9.75

Plato Combinacion - flour tortilla burrito filled with refried black beans, a medley of vegtables, covered with adobo sauce, corn tortilla enchilada filled with melted cheese, topped with sour cream and onions and served with Pico de Gallo sauce $11.75

Sorry, we're spending a "week at Disney" while both FH and I are on vacation and have been out of touch with the real world. ;)

Sounds good for what you've described above, except for the green sauce, was the "flat thing" a corn tortilla/enchilada? Green sauce over an enchilada is fairly common, so that may have been it.

Lisa and Forever, thanks for the description of the platter!

I had to laugh out loud at Bavaria's description of the enchilada (don't worry Bavaria, I'm laughing with you, not at you :teeth: ). But of course you can laugh at me when I can't describe German food. We don't have a lot of good Mexican food here, but when we lived in Texas we sure did and it's one thing I miss.

I might end up at San Angel with my son because I know he's going to grow tired of mac/cheese that they serve at other restaurants. At the very least he could have a quesadilla and black beans. If the rice is vegie he'd be happiest with rice and black beans, with some tortillas (basically a vegan platter, not that he's vegan, but that's what he prefers).

It was such a disappointment, especially since I was expecting the old veggie sandwich. The pita bread was very hard and very dry. I usually don't care for pita sandwiches unless the bread is very fresh or has been toasted or grilled. The filling reminded me of a greek salad with bottled salad dressing drenched all over it. It was also quite small (not much fit in the pita pockets) which didn't really matter since I had to force myself to eat what was in front of me. I asked one of the CM's why they got rid of the old veggie sandwich and he told me that there was too much labor involved in the preperation of the old sandwich.

I think I might follow your idea and just skip a meal at AK (or steal DH's dessert from his lunch!) instead of wasting a CS credit at that park. Too bad, the old veggie sandwich was probably one of the better CS meals. Maybe I'm pathetic or I don't have enough to think about in my life, but I feel like I mourn for the old veggie sandwich at Tusker House...bring it back!!!!
Bleah! $7.29 for a salad in a pita? I'm definitely doing pretzel and fruit at the Harambe Market, then. That will be a much better lunch.

The San Angel veggie menu looks pretty good to me. Thanks for posting it, LisaS! It's the first time I've seen it. I love Mexican, even when it is Taco Bell.

I think that my son and I will pack food with us when we go to AK or plan to eat breakfast at Boma first when we're touring in the morning.

*snif* ok, now that I've had a chance to dry my eyes... JUST KIDDING T&B! I'm happy to see some of my old foodie buddies on this thread, along with a few new ones.

Nobody has mentioned Nine Dragons, so here goes... They used to have 3 or 4 veggie items on the menu. Appetizers were tofu tiles or veggie spring rolls (not deep fried); entrees were eggplant in garlic or a Shanghai grain dish. We used to have debates here about the eggplant - I've seen ingredient lists for it and it doesn't show any chicken broth, nor did I have issues after eating it, but others here said that it did have chicken broth. (It is on a section of the menu labelled 'vegetarian entrees')

In August 2005 I went to Epcot for a few days and decided to have dinner at Nine Dragons. My server proudly handed me the 'new menu, just started today'. NOTHING veggie - no appetizers, no entrees! I was quite upset as there were no ADRs to be had that day around WS. He told me that the kitchen couldn't even prepare anything special, and the chef came out to confirm this.

The manager did get me into Garden Grill where I had a nice meal, but :confused3 ???!!!!!!!!

The good news is that when I returned in October 2005, I checked out the menu and four items are back (the Shanghai dish was replaced by stir fried veggies - I am disappointed as the other one was a unique regional item). They remain on the menu as of Dec 05 and Mar 06.

I supose that after my experience, they realized that they 'forgot' something on the menu and had to add it back!

For those of us with great Chinese food, isn't Nine Dragons a letdown? I've never eaten there to know, this is just what I've read. We have a couple of good vegie Chinese restaurants not too far from us. OT, but take a look at this place http://www.thevegetablegarden.com/ It's about 1/2 hour from us and when I'm in the neighborhood on weekdays I go there for their lunch specials. I'm not vegan, but I could be if I could eat like this all the time. :teeth:

I actually really don't like Chinese food, and I live in a city with some of the best (a place near my workplace used to serve $200/person lunches!). Very high end and also lots of family run places which are very authentic, ie not Americanized. Personally, I wouldn't go to Nine Dragons normally, but if there is no other option.... DVCconvert gives it pretty good reviews, and I follow his tastebuds when I can.

I think that the fast food place in China is very Americanized, but Nine Dragons a little less so.

FWIW, I really don't like PF Chang either; every time I've eaten there I've been ill.

I love PF Changs, but I wouldn't call it authenic. It's probably to Chinese food what Tex-Mex food is to Mexican food.

Geez, all this talk about food has me hungry. I've been sick and on medication that doesn't leave me with much of an appetite, but I still get hungry. Then I get food and just pick at it. But now I want Chinese food! :rotfl: Thanks a lot! :lmao:
