For me too. I'm "old" in a runners world I think. I've never run at all before training for the 5K on Disney Marathon Weekend this past Jan. I started Jan 2012 to train for that. Most ppl would laugh at that I think but I was able to do the 5K in under 39min and then another 5K on Castaway Cay. Now remember I was the definition of Couch Potato prior and weighed 100 lbs more. I have no excuse except age at this point. BUT I'm so slow, not that I mind but I worry about being last and about getting picked up off the course and not allowed to finishThat would be soooo sad. That said I think I've been training too hard, (still have sore hips from my last 4mi run 2 days ago). I have to be confident enough to let myself slow down a bit in both intensity and speed. So I'm going from a 3:1 run ratio down to a 2:1 this week and see how that goes.
To your comment about being old: If you watched coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, you may have seen the 78-year-old man who was running the marathon and was knocked down by the blast. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/15/bill-iffrig-runner-boston-marathon-explosion_n_3088891.html
I do know how you feel - I think you mean that you are not young starting this process. Neither am I. But, it's important that we keep trying and see what we can achieve.

I just want to encourage you that you can do this if you keep training. You are correct to listen to your body. Don't burn yourself out. A lot of the endurance exercise is mental - can I keep going. Yes, you can - and you will!
Congratulations on even trying - you are a winner already!
