For me too. I'm "old" in a runners world I think. I've never run at all before training for the 5K on Disney Marathon Weekend this past Jan. I started Jan 2012 to train for that. Most ppl would laugh at that I think but I was able to do the 5K in under 39min and then another 5K on Castaway Cay. Now remember I was the definition of Couch Potato prior and weighed 100 lbs more. I have no excuse except age at this point. BUT I'm so slow, not that I mind but I worry about being last and about getting picked up off the course and not allowed to finish :( That would be soooo sad. That said I think I've been training too hard, (still have sore hips from my last 4mi run 2 days ago). I have to be confident enough to let myself slow down a bit in both intensity and speed. So I'm going from a 3:1 run ratio down to a 2:1 this week and see how that goes.

To your comment about being old: If you watched coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, you may have seen the 78-year-old man who was running the marathon and was knocked down by the blast. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/15/bill-iffrig-runner-boston-marathon-explosion_n_3088891.html

I do know how you feel - I think you mean that you are not young starting this process. Neither am I. But, it's important that we keep trying and see what we can achieve. :)

I just want to encourage you that you can do this if you keep training. You are correct to listen to your body. Don't burn yourself out. A lot of the endurance exercise is mental - can I keep going. Yes, you can - and you will!

Congratulations on even trying - you are a winner already!

I am amazed at what I am capable of too. I did my first 10k a few weeks ago, I am going to do another 10k with my dd on May 18th. I ran 7 miles for the first time in a training run last Sunday and I felt fine afterwards. (I finally realized that I need to drink lots of water throughout the day after a long run to avoid a bad headache.)
I think that it clicked for me when I realized that I can keep doing my run, walk, run method. I had never heard of Jeff Galloway until a few months ago, but I was basically already doing what he advises on my own. I think that finding the "Galloway plan" has legitimized what I do, at least in my mind, and has given me a push that I can do this!

I had that problem back a few months ago, but in addition to the headache, I was also feeling lethargic. Thanks to some awesome help I recieved on the Disboards, I learned I wasn't replenishing my carbs enough!! Chocolate milk!!! Chocolate milk is the key!! Yes, make sure you are hydrated enough, but adding a chocolate milk after your long run will help you to recover quicker and feel better the rest of the day :thumbsup2

I apologize in advance if this has been asked/answered before. I noticed the OP stated that the 2014 Princess 1/2 is on February 23, 2014.

I was just on the RunDisney website and found this info:

http://www.rundisney.com/princess-half-marathon/

It says that the race is on
February 24, 2014. The dates also conflict on THEIR website. Does anyone on here have a definitive answer as to when the correct date of the race is? I called to double check just waiting to hear back at this point.

Thanks everyone :)

The date listed with the race info (when you scroll down the website) is the 2013 date (which was this past February.) The dates I used on the info post are estimates based on the dates Disney gives at the top of the page and the usual race weekend schedule. Those may change, however, because of the 10k addition :goodvibes

I very much do a walk run ratio of 2:2 due to asthma and the horrible allergy season this year. I long ago figured out that there would be MANY people who will do better than me and that's okay. DH and I did the PHM this year with the goal of finishing healthy and under the time limit...proud to say met all my goals  you can so do this...remember this is your race and nobody elses's !;)

I would definitely slow your ratio down and let your body heal. There are some good hip flexor stretches so try some of those and see if it helps. Runner's world had a good article I found on the web. As far as being slow...I am doing abt a 13:45 pace now....would like to be a tad faster but I've only been at this over a year so I'm not expecting an 8 min mi :rotfl: and I figure at 45 it probably won't happen anyway !;)

I just wanted to jump in and say Hi! This will be my first princess and I'm super excited about the glass slipper challenge! Just started back running this week with hubby, doing the c25k. I'm slow, he's speedy Gonzalez straight off the couch, lol.

Congrats on the 10K! :cheer2:

I never thought I would be a runner until I discovered I could do a run/walk method. I've been doing a modified Galloway method and am going to start with his 10K training plan after my 5K!

Oh, shoot. After this year's Princess, I swore I'd limit my Disney races altogether and skip Princess the next year to try some other things. I'm still in for TOT in hopes of eventual legacy status. I registered for the WDW Half to try something different but still get another crack at the PHM course. I signed up for a local half in late Oct. I was planning on Gasparilla in Feb.

And then... the Glass Slipper Challenge.

GAH!!! :headache:

I can't afford it. I'm not sure my body can take the abuse. I should be supporting my local race scene.

But... I reallyreallyreally want to do this!

I've purposely been avoiding this thread since it opened, knowing that I'd see familiar "faces" and I'd get all excited... yep. :wave2::banana:

So now what?! I don't know if I want encouragement or a big round of "NO, V - don't do it!" :rotfl: Enable away, folks... ;)

:wave2: Do it. It's an inagural 10k, so that basically means you have to.

I second that. I can't afford it either, but I am wracking my brain trying to figure out how to make it happen. It's bad enough the PHM was the one I wanted to do any way. Then there is an inaugural medal, then it is the Glass Slipper?! Cinderella is my favorite!

I agree! I decided to save Dopey for 2015 due to the cost. But this I can't pass up! Will be doing both Tink and Glass Slipper-gotta get that pink C2C too:) Now I just need to figure out how to pay for it...

The chocolate milk tip has really made a difference for me. I tend to eat low carb, but once I added chocolate (almond) milk after my runs and long workouts, I felt so much better!

Welcome, you're going to love the Princess! :thumbsup2

Yep, I agree. You really don't want to miss out on the inaugural race AND being able to get three (or 4 if you C2C) medals in one weekend! :cheer2:

Of course, once I have to actually plunk down all the money for the Tink, the Princess and the Glass Slipper Challenge, someone may need to revive me. I've got my plane ticket for the Tink already and I've got my new sparkletech for my Cinderella costume for the Princess.

I drink flavored coconut water after I run. Will that do something similar?

I think the reason chocolate milk works iz the combination of carbs and protein.

I did change the ratio for todays short training run. I went from 3:1 to 2:1. I had to run the run part faster at 6.0 instead of 5.7 when it was 3:1 but I think overall it was better for me. Same time, same sweat :rotfl2: but mentally it was easier to deal with. I also walked the walk part faster at 3.5 instead of the recommended 3.0 without any ill effects.

The post-workout chocolate milk consumption as a recovery option is actual a myth promoted by the Canadian dairy farmers. It's actually loaded with sugar and simple carbs which does not build muscle or assist in recovery. If it works for you, go for it but know there are other options out there. You definitely want to increase your glycogen stores post long run. Most people don't start depleting these stores until 90-120 minutes into an activity.
