Hello everyone! Our power came back on today! Still lots of stress here, gas lines are long. My family members in Mississippi are all alive. Some lost everything, but we are all grateful for their lives. Our kids will be out of school next week also until they figure out repairs. Some schools may have to double up and do split days.

I hope ya'll are all well!Happy vacation slo! Did you work out everything with the teachers for your trip?

The power coming back on is great news and I am so, so glad that your family is all safe. Please tell them that your friends are praying for them!!

Thanks for the happy vacation wishes - we are really looking forward to it. I did get everything worked out with her teacher. Her teacher told me that she will give Stephanie some homework, but for us to just enjoy our vacation. The office just sent me a note in the mail today encouraging us to not take our vacation this time of year again. I thought to myself, "to bad, we'll be going in Sept. again in 2006"

I have a hurricane question for you. How is your DH doing and how much time has he been at the firehouse since this happened? Is he doing things he normally hasn't done before? I was really thinking of him during all this because I'm sure his work for him and the rest of the Mobile FD was enormous.

HI Slo! Things are better everyday here. We are arranging to take supplies (generators, gas, etc...) to family in MS. DH reported in 12 hours before his shift ( Sunday at 7pm) and got to come home Tuesday at around 8am. He was home that day but worked overtime Wed, his regular day Thursday and 12 hours overtime Friday, 24 hours overtime today and will have his regular shift tomorrow. Today he is driving the gas truck. They are filling up the fire trucks and gas cans for generators for the stations (many don't have power yet). They are also filling up vehicles for FEMA, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. So I really haven't seen him at all as I am back at work, too. The schools will be closed next week also, but will hopefully be able to reopen after that. We are preparing here and I know in Texas to absorb the displaced children into our school systems. This will be a burden on our systems, but these families need somewhere to be.

When we used to take the kids out of school I always tried to find ways to incorporate their lessons into the trip. Disney has sooo many ways! When they were young & studying letters we would look for things that began with that letter and find pictures to cut out and paste into a collage. We practice our math concepts while in line or ordering food, etc... You probably know all of this and I think I am just desperately wanting to think happy pixie dust thoughts so I am going on ad nauseum! We will lose alot of our days out of school as we make up our lost days, but I am continuing to plan our trip over Mardi Gras! Hope to talk to you soon!

Hi Idroveallnight (someday, you need to tell us what your name stands for I'm very curious) - it is so good to hear from you. If you were in front of me right now, I'd give you a big hug!!! When I see all this misery down south, I'm always so grateful that you and your family are doing okay.

Is your DH just exhausted? I figured he was working alot and I was right - the poor guy. But that's how our FD Dh's are, they give so much of themselves - God Bless them!!!

It's good to hear you are back at work, but unfortunate that your kids are going to be out of school for another week. Is this because the schools had a lot of damage, or because they are preparing for all the child victims of the hurricane to come to the school. I would think that having so many new children at one time would need a lot of preparation.

I like your ideas on incorporating school into vacation. I am going to use some of these ideas while we are waiting in line. Stephanie loves doing stuff like that, so it will not be a battle. She got an A+ on her first spelling test ever and we are so proud of her. I asked her if she was proud of herself and she said "oh yeah!!!".

slo - I had a fairly nice Labor Day. Didn't get much done. I don't work too many nights at work and when I do I'm sluggish the next day for getting to bed so late.

Hello Everyone! We labored on labor day - we cleaned our yard from the storm! idroveallnight came from me & my mom driving all night our last few trips to Disney. We used to be like normal people & drive during the day, but one trip we got too excited and couldn't wait so we drove all night. And we keep on driving all night!!
slo - we are out of school because we lost 25% of our schools and they won't send us back until all public schools go back. Private schools went back today. Bayou la Batre was hit really hard - it looks like MS and LA. They lost all 3 of their schools. Some schools will have to go back on split schedules. One school will use a bldg. in the am and another school will use the same bldg. in the pm.
I have two cousins (both 17) from MS and they may be coming to live with us so they can go to school here. Imagine that - 3 seventeen year olds under one roof! What am I thinking? The schools are prepared to take the kids in. They are just telling them to come and register & then we will work it all out. It will be crazy for awhile, but will settle down.

eyore'smountainpals - did ya'll get the patch I sent? If not let me know & I will send another.

We have taken in a baby squirrel. We had three to start with and two have died. Anyone know anything about squirrels?? We have contacted the environmental center and have milk & vitamins, but does anyone know more?

Good evening ladies!! We just came home with a new Mini Van tonight. We bought a Mazda MPV and I really like it. It was a big impulse buy because I wanted to get a van that got better gas milage. The van that I traded in was a Windstar and it was not getting good gas milage, so I hope the new van is better (at least it better be ).

Idroveallnight - what a great story behind your name!! Mine is not so exciting, slo is just my initials. Holy Cow - 17 teenagers in your house at once - here's some PD right now to help you cope with that . Seriously though......good for you for helping your family out when they need you.
