Hey There Chicago Diser's.....its me again looking for travel advice. I have our plane tickets booked and we will be in Chicago from 05/15/-18. I discovered after that there is a very large restaurant association convention in that timeframe and its jacking up rates on hotel rooms. I was, however, able to find the Club Quarters located in the Central Loop for only $89 a night. Given the situation, I dont think we are going to get a great steal on Priceline or Hotwire for a better location for under $200/ night. Can anyone give me feedback on the location of this hotel? Its located at 111 West Adams Street next to Rookery (not even sure what that is?). Anyway, we are two girls in our early 30's and have no problems walking so do you think this is a decent location. One last question....sorry if its ignorant, but what exactly is the magnificent mile?
We were also told to grab a drink at the signature room?? for a good view of the city. Does this require a reservation?
Thanks again for all your help.

Hi y'all!!

We had my mom over for lunch today. Lauren made brownies with chopped up Reese's peanut butter cups in them! YUM-O!!

Then we watched a History Channel show about the White House. It was a repeat but was obviously done not that long ago as they mentioned Obama moving in soon. It was a tour of the White House, showing rooms never really seen by the avergae person. Really cool!! And was filled with lots of history info!!
All you history buffs gotta try to catch that one. I think you can order the DVD of the show.

slo I always think of just jumping in the shower to rinse off my hair but I admit that the thought of hair dye running down my body kinda grosses me out!!! :rotfl: :upsidedow :rotfl2:
Hope you had a fun day! There is a great museum in downtown Joliet we like to go to that has free days and we try to go there often.

mac The later, the better on the diet! :thumbsup2

Tiggerrn I had a friend in high school who had a great dane. He was the hugest dog!!! He would take underwear and socks all the time! There was no stopping him. He was so big he could rest his head on the counter top....and take whatever was there too! One thing he never messed with was the pet bird. He would stare at it on end, and the bird would say the dog's name and call him over. You had to see it to believe it!! It was so funny!

Time to make dinner. Taco salad!

We had a great family day yesterday!!:goodvibes
What was even better was the price of it all - so much cheaper than Chicago. When Kevin and I went to MoSI it cost us $26 for admission and $15 to park. Here it cost us $14 for admission and $3 for parking. Granted we had to pay for gas, but that was only $23 (we filled up before we left home and left there). We just couldn't get over how different the costs were.

Then this is sort of a funny story.
After we went to the Indiana State Museum, we went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway so we could do the track tour (the girls didn't remember doing this before). When we left there, we were really really hungry - we hadn't eaten since 7:30am and it was now 4pm. We went to the speedways lounge (we were really looking forward to this - great food), but it was dead, and the lady inside said that the girls couldn't eat there anyway because of smoking ordinance that says wherever there's smoking children under 18 can't be present. So we left and went to a restaurant that we've taken the girls before - it's called Union Jacks. We go inside and they say the same thing - by now we are starving!!!!! So we end up at Hooters - okay fine. We all order our food, and when we get our food, my food is barely warm - so I nicely send it back. The waitress apologizes and says that I will get credit for my meal and a new one will come soon - okay fine. So the rest of the family eats their meal, and I finally get mine when they are almost done. I take a bite of it - same way. I had Kevin take a bite, and he said it was cold. I told the waitress to touch it with her finger, and she agreeded that it's cold - she takes the food away. Next the manager comes and says she'll credit us $30, and if we want dessert to let us know. The waitress brings the food back and says that if I want to take it home for later I can, because she's going to throw it away anyway - I said great!!! So than we sit there waiting for my food - and we sit, sit sit, sit and sit, and the waitress comes and says, "Are you ready for your bill?" I said, "No, I haven't received my food yet." She says, "Oh, you still wanted your food? Didn't the manager talk to you?" I said, "Yes, she mentioned a credit, but I assumed I was going to still eat, because I'm hungry. I have a 2 1/2 hour drive home and I'm hungry." (I said this all very jokingly to keep the mood light). She said, "Oh, let me put in the order." Than I thought - I gotta get my kids home, I don't have time to wait again to have it be wrong. So I told her, "No, my kids are getting restless, and we'll just go." She says, "I don't want you to be hungry." I said, "That's okay, I'll just go home and make a sandwich. I have peanut butter - it'll probably be tainted with salmonella, but that's okay." We laughed!!! She leaves to get the bill, and I told Kevin, "We will hit the first drive-thru we can find." So I ended up with 2 McDonald's hamburgers for dinner:rolleyes: I found the whole thing so bizarre - it's just weird that they thought I wouldn't want to eat. I was never mad, and in fact, I was very joking throughout the whole thing - you would think I would want to eat, and not just get the heck out - so weird!!!!

Today I am going to 10am Mass and then going to work for awhile - I have alot to do. Than I have to come home and do alot here - the work never ends:laundy:

Smacky - I have no advice on the hotel {{sorry}}. The magnificent mile is Michigan Avenue - this is where you find alot of shopping. You will find The Disney Store, The Niki Store, Watertower Place (this is where American Girl Store is found), Ghiradellis, and many other stores. The Signature Room is, I think, on top of the John Hancock building (I've been on top of there, but I can't remember if this is what it's called :scratchin) If this is it, it's a very very nice place to get a drink or martini. We went up there during a thunderstorm, at night, and it was awesome!!!!

Bunchkin - I will have to look for that History Channel show now too - I better start writing these down:rolleyes:
**Don't worry about the hair dye running down your body - your soaping up anyway. I've been doing it this way for 13 years:thumbsup2
**What type of information is in the Joliet musuem?
**Reese's in brownies sounds yummy!!!!:goodvibes

To everyone else - :wave2:

Well, I better eat breakfast and get ready for church.
Have a great day everyone!!!

Hi gang! This is really momto1. I can't post from home as momto1 but can under ds name -warriorsred.

Slo - Sounds like you had a great day! Too bad about your Hooters dinner. Bummer. I agree on the Joliet museum. It is great. It has a lot of local history but then there is some other history, a trolley car the kid can go in, a kids room, and I think the space area is open now too. Let us know if you go!

DG - no advice on paypa. Hope you got it worked out.

good morning chicagoland homies.

mom to mom, i like your alias.
now that i know who you are, i don't have to look up and search for my welcome siggie. i know, i'm bad....:smokin:

slo, what an evening you had yesterday!

when i said we were starting the diet soon, i didn't mean yesterday was the start time........

i'm glad it all ended fine with your family.
part of your family had dinner, you received $30 off the dinner and then were able to hit mickey d's...........hey, i love those burgers. can never go wrong with a hamburger.

hope all are doing well today.
tomorrow is another work day..

:thumbsup2 I have been to Club Qtrs...:thumbsup2 well not exactly :thumbsup2 but know where it is :thumbsup2 .. I used to work in Sears Tower and the company had people stay there.. It is right by Elphant and Castle in downtown Chicago. Across the street and down the block from the W hotel. Rookery is a historic buiding in Chicago. Historic Landmark and an architectural treasure, The Rookery is the oldest high rise building still standing in Chicago. Completed in 1888 by the noted firm of Burnham and Root, it is designed in the Beaux Arts Classical style and was described at its opening as having a “powerful exterior with lively ornament.” The lobby was remodeled in 1905 by Frank Lloyd Wright, who added some complementary Prairie style elements.
The interior is centered by a spectacular light court, innovative for its time, which allows light to saturate the space. Intricate ironwork, mosaic flooring, dramatic marble, and a magnificent spiral staircase complete the lobby.
The building stands on the site of the former City Hall. A favorite place for nesting birds and crooked politicians, the spot became known as “The Rookery,” despite efforts to give the new building a more noble name.
The significance of the building is not only in its architectural grandeur and uniqueness, but also in its history. Many of the plans for The World’s Columbian Exposition (The World’s Fair 1893), which Daniel Burnham organized, were made in this very building. The World’s Columbian Exposition is responsible for bringing attention to Chicago as a world class city full of brilliant architecture and elegance. The Rookery, while not featured at the fair, stands today as an example of Chicago’s architectural brilliance and innovation with a timeless elegance.

Crock pot has a roast and veggies in it, and the smell has finally found it's way upstairs where I'm at. Smells great!

slo I haven't been to a Hooter's since probably the early 90's!! And I only went one time!! Didn't care for the food, or the atmosphere, that much.
That's a shame about your food not being properly cooked...twice!! At least they gave you a decent credit towards the bill.
The Joliet Museum is like momto1 described. It does include a lot of info on local history. There are exhibits and artifacts to look at. Some hands on things to do, like the Trolley. You climb on board and watch a movie that's inside. It makes it seem like your riding along. They just added a space exhibit too. There is a movie to watch when you first get there. We all found in interesting, the kids didn't move an inch during the whole thing ( which was relatively short). Admission is cheap and parking is free across the street. There is a kids room where they have classes and special events. But we found it open to the public when we were there. There were many things to do in there with the kids. They even took home some activities and coloring pages. In the museum is the Route 66 Experience too, this is free. There's not a lot to it but it is really neat. There is also a gift shop and a snack machine or two.

What a cold morning :cold:
I'm so glad Sophie is still sleeping :dog:

Yesterday when I went out to my car to go to church and work - it was dead :guilty: I immediately knew it was the battery, but I was home alone, and there was nothing I could do. So when Kevin came home from work, he got a new battery and fixed everything. By this time though, I was so involved with working around the house, that I stayed home - so I have a lot of work ahead of me at work today.

Last night the girls and I went with my friend and her DD to her church for something called KidzBlitz. It was show where that was Bible based, and it had kids come up from the audience to play all these wacky games - it was so much fun!!! Our kids were not picked to play, but they had tons of fun watching other kids.

momto1 and Bunchkin - Thanks for the info on that musuem. Kevin and I will have to take the kids sometime:)

Everyone else - :wave2:

Well, I need to go workout this morning, because I haven't worked out since last Monday. I have been so bad about working out lately, but I'm so bored with being inside, and the winter always makes me feel so unenergetic. I can hardly wait until the time change!!

Have a good day everyone!!

So when Kevin came home from work, he got a new battery and fixed everything.

I feel your pain! That's my first task of the morning today. We took Carol's car to the tire shop yesterday to get a tire fixed and the battery died while we were there. Not wanting to pay retail on a battery on a Sunday, I jumped it and brought it home. So, my first job this morning is to run up to my buddy's battery warehouse and pick up a new battery for it.

Morning! My car wouldn't start today. This cold weather killed the battery! Looks like I'll have to cancel my dr.'s appointment and skip working out...instead, I'll do homework and play Animal Crossing on the Wii. Anyone play it? So addicting!
Well, my family survived last week. While no fun, the wake and funeral were okay. My Gma is at peace and my Gpa is doing as well as expected. He always wanted to visit the "old country" but my Gma was too scared to fly that far. We are hoping to get him to go. We'll see. It was nice to see lots of family, though. I also survived my reading. Things were so hectic that I didn't get to see a copy before (luckily, I am a pretty good reader) and I went first, so I did not have time to worry about it. Then, later that day, ds started to get sick and ended up with strep! Then, dh's car window got hit with something from a passing truck and got two huge chunks taken out of it and cracks all over! THEN, we drove back up to Chicago to celebrate my dad's 60th bday. So, maybe hanging around all day isn't such a bad idea!?!
All Chicago Dis'ers- Thanks so much for all of your kind words last week. Really, your thoughts and prayers meant a lot to me.:)
Crissup- Swing by Central IL with a battery?
Slo- I hear you on the workout rut. I am kinda' glad I can't go to the dr.- I don't want my fat weight immortalized on my medical records!:rotfl2:
Hersey, Mac, Gef-Yes. Let's delay the diet. I am all for procrastinating. Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?
Bunchkin- I am all for Reese's in anything. Choc is my first fave food, pb is my second- therein lies the problem with Reese's!:rotfl:
Tig- Yes. My dogs love undies, too. So gross!!! What do expect from them, though? Have you seen the places they lick?!?:crazy2:

Piglet and Tig- Ooh, what dessert did you get at The Cheesecake Factory? I'll live vicariopusly through you!
History buffs- I enjoy history, too, but I went with English as my major. The two overlap sometimes. Last semester I had a history of the eng lang class- how social/political aspects lead us to our PDE (present day english). Now I have two classes dealing with Old English/Medieval lit. It is very interesting. Also, there used to be a series called The 1800 house on PBS. It was a reality show where a family lived exactly as they would have during the time period. Bits can be found on youtube. They also did a medieval time one, too. I haven't found it online, but I remember watching it. I am so happy to live in this time period!

Now, on to cancelling my dr.'s appt and playing Animal Xing. If anyone plays, pm me and we'll exchange codes!

I need some batteries for cars too.. will he deal with friends of friends??

Paint :grouphug: it sounds like your trip had a lot of issues. I think you need a day or two to recover. :thumbsup2 Hope you get your GMP to fly and do things while he can.

I worked out.. and then today I am going to another funeral for another friend's MOM.. She is so dear, we have been friends since we were freshman in high school. I want to be there and support her.

talk later

Wow, lots of battery problems today. Knock on wood it does not continue to spread.

Paint ~ I glad to hear it was a nice service for her.

TCF was wonderful. We did not believe that the portions are huge (warned by many) but guess what, they are. I got the beef ribs (since I can't eat pork anymore, I have been craving ribs) but did not care for them. Kevin and Lauren ate them the next day, so they did not go to waste. For dessert we brought home a slice of godiva chocolate cheesecake, and it was wonderful. I don't even like cheesecake, but this was incredible.

Okay guys I haven't posted here in years. I used to go to DIS meets in IL all the time. I live in Northern IL. Gurnee is a great meeting place for me. I am sorry that I don't have time to read through all of the posts on here. Are there any meets coming up in the near future?
Thanks for your help.

Hello to all.

Geffric...I am so sorry to hear about your job. Lots of good wishes for you to find something you love quickly.

Paint..I am sorry for your loss. :grouphug:

Piglet...I LOVE Godiva Choc cheesecake...yummm... (I vote our next Dis meet is at the Cheesecake factory!!!)

Bunchkin..I can "smell* your dinner, hope it's great!'

Slo, and all with battery issues...ugh...that's one reason I hate, hate, hate winter! And, did I mention I really, really hate winter??

Mac..thank you for posting the tv listings...How are you feeling? How is therapy?

Hersey, Tigg, Rose, ALL..Hello & have a great night!

Yesterday was a very dull day.
The store was dead, so I was able to get a decent amount done:thumbsup2
I'm praying for some business today, but I think many people don't want to go out in this cold :sad2:

Did any of you watch the Govenor on GMA or The View?
He is such an idiot!!! Does he really think that people believe him?! While I ate my lunch, I watched replays of him on abc.com, and I just can't believe this guy. I would be so embarrassed if I was his wife.

Speaking of abc.com - if any of you like Charlie Gibson (I love this guy!!! I could listen and watch him all day - he is so likeable!!) I found that he broadcasts live in the afternoon on abc.com. I'm so excited about this, because I will catch up on my news while I eat my lunch. Watching online is the same as watching on tv - he has interviews and everything - pretty cool!!!

Crissup - That's nice that you didn't have to pay full price for your battery. I was afraid our battery was going to be so expensive, but it was $89.99 with our old battery. I realize $90 isn't chump change, but it is when I thought it was going to be $300+ (I don't know much about cars).

paint - You did not have a good week last week ::hug:: I'm glad that your reading went well at your Grandma's funeral ::hug::. I understand how you felt, because I wrote and read a eulogy for my Grandma, and it was very difficult.
**I hope you were able to get your battery fixed.
**I've never tried Animal Crossing, but I really want to try - I've heard so many good things about it.

geffric - I'm sorry to hear of your friends mom:guilty: Was she ill?

piglet - I"m sorry you didn't love your dinner:guilty: I'm glad your dessert was yummy though:goodvibes

sshd - :welcome:
Please come visit often - we would love to have you!!!
To answer your question, we don't have a meet coming up anytime soon, but hopefully we can think of something once it gets warmer:thumbsup2

Donna - I had to chuckle with your post, because I told Kevin I hate winter when we went to bed, and I woke up to my friends email saying he hates winter, and now I read your post saying you hate winter - we are all saying the same thing - I think that's kinda funny!!!:rotfl:

Well, I'm off to get Stephanie out of bed - have a great day!!!
