Six bags of trash and 4 boxes to Goodwill so far, and I'm only 2/3 of the way done. "Organizing my house?" You ask. I wish. DD(10) left for her Dad's on Fri, and in my infinite wisdom I decided it was time to give her a room makeover for her 11th birthday. I'm starting to wonder exactly who slipped the lsd into my water.

I know it's a good thing that it's getting done. I've made my mantra "simplify." And I fully appreciate it that it's at least 50% my fault for: 1.Not riding herd on her like I should have been, and 2. Not doing this a year ago. Needless to say, things will be changing when it comes to bedroom maintenance when she gets back. Okay, vent over.

Good for you. Kids bring in so much stuff, but I try to get rid of things right when we are done with them. My baby just moved up to 3 to 6 month clothes and the 0 to 3 have already been donated. I think the most important thing you can do (but it's very very hard) is to not bring it home in the first place.

I've been finding that out all day. Most of the trash has been school papers, magazines, things like that. I honestly had no idea how bad it was until I really started digging in this morning. Part of the makeover is a new twin bed (she had a full, and it took up most of the room), and I think that will help. I'm taking a break right now, and am going to start again after dinner. I'm getting it all cleaned today so I don't have to stew about it.

I've hauled out 2 bags of trash and 4 bags of stuff for Good Will today too! And that is ONLY from my laundry room! I stash the stuff to donate to Goodwill in there....and NEVER take it. Today, I'm taking it! Actually, took half and will take the other half tomorrow. It was stuffed. Its going to look so much better!

Good for you! Its easier to do kids rooms when they are gone!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Three cheers to you! It is hard work! You have motivated me to get back to work tomorrow of getting rid of my clutter.

Doing it while she was here would be a nightmare. She has Asperger's and if you ask her, literally nothing can be tossed or donated. A part of me is a bit worried about her reaction, but she hasn't seen/played with most of what I'm donating for at least a year.

I'm a clutter queen, she comes by it naturally. My goal is to get one room done a week until the whole house is done, then spend 20 minutes a day keeping it that way.

I think it's dangerous to do this while she's gone. You never know what she treasures that you don't realize. My ds 13 has things that he goes nuts about when they go missing. Much safer to remove the items and store them in the garage until you make sure she doesn't want to retrieve a special item.

I understand where you're coming from, but I have to be honest and tell you it would upset her more having to weed through everything, and I would end up forcing her to throw things away that she's completely forgotten about at this point. Most of the things being donated she hasn't even had access to for over a year- that's how messy her room was- she had a path to her bed and that was about it.

Her biggest treasures are her stuffed animals and her books. I have put all the animals in two garbage bags, and am waiting until she's home to let her cut the amount in half. She has bookshelves for all the books, and I'm a bibliophile- so none of them are going anywhere, they're just getting re-organized.

I swear my DD7 is a hoarder. She refuses to throw ANYTHING away. Her famous line is "I can fix it", so I understand how stuff accumulates. My kids also have 4 sets of grandparents, 2 great-grandmothers, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins..... they get so much stuff for holidays and birthdays.

I am a clutter queen when it comes to mail and my kids school work they bring home. I will let it accumulate on the desk for a while then one day I will go through it and throw away 95% of it. My life would be so much easier if I just threw it away as it came in, but I guess I like to do it the hard way.
