Cakes and Napoleons and F&W, oh my! Planning our Disney wedding!! UPDATED 9/15!!!

Your food pictures are killing me!! But in a good way, hahaha. Seriously though, between Boma and F&W... this is enough to convince me we need to make a trip in October some year! Whew. That Belgian waffle is just... there are no words for how amazing it looks.

Boo for the last dinner of the trip. :(

You really really really should go during F&W - this was our first time there then, and we LOVED it!

Your October crowds look so much better than mine! I'm glad you gave TSM another try! It's one of my favorites!

You are also farther ahead on your TR than I am on mine! However you have a good reason! Planning a wedding is important stuff!

At some points it was crowded, but it was never too bad!!

I love Boma...:goodvibes both for the food and the environment... (& you weren't kidding when you mentioned being early for your ADRs... but the AKL is a nice place to kill time...)

TSM... so glad that you had a better experience this time... I think it's a really cute ride (but I'm ok with spinning) but I HATE the lunacy at rope drop... with all the craziness to get back to it...:scared:

Nice food choices at F&W... yums... I too am curious to see where you're heading for dinner...:scratchin

Yeah, we were SUPER early that morning!!! It was just nice and relaxing to hang out in the lobby though!!

I can't understand why people go THAT nuts for TSM, I think it's a fun ride, but not worth the stampede!! :confused3

That spicey chicken sausage from Canada looks like something DH would like. Hmm... wonder if I can work my way back to Food & Wine if I go with that angle... :rotfl: Also that Belgian waffle... well I think that might just be enough twisting of our rubber arms.
Annnnyway! Looks like a great round of the Festival! And how cool to get to see the globe being pulled into place!

It was really good!! Yes, you should definitely go back to F&W, we LOVED it!!

Your breakfast at Boma sounds really good! I've been wanting to eat at an AKL restaurant, but have been having a difficult time deciding when and where. After seeing your photos, though, and hearing your review, I think I might have found a contender. :thumbsup2

Sorry about your memory card getting full! That sounds like such a pain. But I think all of us tend to go through some kind of camera issues on at least one trip. (Mine used to be the battery dying.):confused3

Boma breakfast is one of our favorites, it's so good!!

Hahaha yeah, I think camera issues have to happen to everyone at some point! I'm not sure why I didn't pay more attention to the rapidly decreasing number of photos left though!! :rotfl:

Boma looks so delicious! How cool that you got to see them put the illuminations globe into place! And that water bottle is really classy, even if it costs $3.50 lol

Breakfast at Boma looked good. Your table, is I believe near where we sat just a little over a month ago... Looking at the buffet line... the right side of the restaurant?

It was really good!!! Yes, it was a kind of "behind-the-scenes" look! :thumbsup2

Hahaha why not take a classy break from the usual water bottles?

Hahaha yes! :thumbsup2

We arrived back at the room, and packed up our things for a bit before heading out to our last dinner of the trip...Boatwrights!

I was very interested to see the other Port Orleans resort after staying at POFQ for the past few days, and thought it was nice that they were only a short walk away from each other. It was a very direct route (even WE didnt get lost!), and we strolled along the river for a few minutes before arriving at POR.

From our first impressions, while POR did seem a LOT larger than POFQ, we immediately preferred the theme there. The atmosphere was really nice, and it had a lot of fun touches that made it feel a lot more Disney than POFQ to us.

Plus: horses!

We walked around what Im guessing is the central area of the resort for a few more minutes before checking in to dinner.

For as little as it is talked about on the Dis, Boatwrights was pretty busy that evening, and we waited for a couple of minutes before being seated.

Eventually we were seated in what seemed to be the "main" dining room, where there was a giant boat along the ceiling, and various tools on the walls, giving the feeling of dining in a workshop, which was kind of cool and unique.

The floor:

The menu (and cute napkins).

Our server came by, and gave us what he called "the world's BEST cornbread," which was an intriguing build-up.

Our impression: while very good, we're not convinced we'd go as far as to say it's the world's BEST . But still, very good.

I'm sure you've noticed by now that DF and I aren't big drinkers, but on our last night of our trips, we usually get a drink with dinner. DF chose the Long Island Iced Tea.

DF: This was a dangerous drink - you couldn't taste that there was liquor in it, but it was not light on the liquor at all.

And I went with the white Sangria.

This was really good, nice and orange-y and sweet.

DF ordered the jambalaya for his dinner, and upon hearing that he liked spicy food, the server delivered these as well:

Our entrees then arrived!

Jambalaya:

DF: This was good, the rice was overcooked so it was a bit tacky, but that could be the "proper" way jambalaya is supposed to be served. (Any jambalaya experts out there?) It came with 2 jumbo shrimp and 2 andouille sausages, and was a healthy portion of food. It wasn't very spicy, but I added the jalapenos and hot sauce that was brought over to it as well.

And I got the beef medallions, which came with mac and cheese, vegetables, and a crayfish beignet.

So remember how I was the one in the last chapter who wasn't hungry and was thinking of skipping this dinner?

Yeah, I ate the ENTIRE thing.

The beef was excellent, it had a great flavor and was perfectly cooked. I'm not sure what cheeses were in the mac and cheese, but it was super good and creamy. The asparagus was really good as well, nicely cooked. I'd never had a crayfish beignet before, it was a little dry, but good too.

We decided to pass on dessert at Boatrights, remembering that we still hadn't tried the legendary beignets at POFQ, and well, carpe diem!

Overall, we had a great time at Boatrights. We really didn't know what to expect going in, but the atmosphere was really nice, the staff was great, and the food was really good. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone, especially if you're staying at POFQ or POR.

We strolled back over to POFQ (this time I did almost get us lost, not sure of whether or not to go back over the bridge&luckily DF had a better sense of direction than I did there), and went over to Sassagoula Floatworks&because it was now finally time for us to try the one, the only, the beignets!

The beignets are cooked to order, and I decided to get us 3 of them to share. The nice CM working the beignet fryer slipped in a 4th beignet with our order, and topped the fried dough with an unimaginable amount of powdered sugar. DF saved us a table while I used one of our snack credits for the beignets, accidentally spilling sugar everywhere over the counter.

Dont worry, it happens ALL the time, the cashier laughed as I attempted to make the least amount of mess possible.

Seriously, YOU try carrying these without making a mess!

I brought the beignets back to the table, and we dug in, expecting sugary fried dough bliss&

While they were certainly sugary fried dough, it was just way too much for it to be bliss (at least, for us). They were ok, but not what we expected. They were unexpectedly crunchy, and really just seemed to be a too-big vessel for loads of powdered sugar. They were difficult to eat without coating a 5-foot-radius in powdered sugar. We only ate a beignet each before throwing the rest away.

We headed back to the room, and packed up the rest of our things. We still had an almost-full day at the parks ahead of us the next day, but knew that wed be leaving the room early (COMPLETELY out of character for us&) for our breakfast the next day.

(I started to mention it earlier, so I guess this is as good a time as any to talk about our impressions of POFQ. Unfortunately, we were not as smitten with the resort as I know a bunch of you all are. The resort itself was nice, I thought that the theme was good, and we enjoyed walking along the quaint streets of the resort. We did think that the theme at POR seemed a bit more elaborate though, from our brief visits to the resort, the buildings were a lot more themed, and the central area was a lot prettier (in my opinion).

While we thought that the resort overall (save for those giant creepy masks at Sassagoula) was nice enough, the room fell more into the ranking of satisfactory for our short stay. On our first night there, the air conditioning kept clicking on and off and on and off and on and off very loudly every 3 minutes or so until we finally gave up and turned it off. We ended up using the room fan instead at night, which was fine, since it wasn't really hot outside anyways, but in July I could see that being an issue.

It was obvious that the room had seen a lot of visitors in its time (which is, of course, to be expected, this is Disney World after all!), as there were a few scuff marks on the walls and whatnot.

We did, however, have another reminder of recent guests - these glasses were like this when we arrived at the room upon check-in. We didnt touch them for several days. Mousekeeping didnt either. (They were replaced with clean glasses mid-way through the week.)

I dont want to give the impression that I was walking through the room marking off a clipboard of faults. There was nothing that we needed to complain about, and again, I know many of you have had wonderful experiences at POFQ. We both agreed that it was "ok for this trip, but never again.")

Glad you enjoyed your final dinner! (your dinner picture is not showing up though). Long Islands that do not taste like alcohol have been known to cause me a bit of trouble!

I'm sorry POFQ was not as expected. That would be a big bummer with the AC in the summer!

I will be staying at POR shortly and plan to explore POFQ if I have some time. I plan to give the beignets a try as well. Gotta try them at least once.

Hmmmm very interesting post for me on so many levels! DH and I were discussing the Port Orleans resorts as a possibility for our next trip so I'm glad to hear your take on so many aspects! (Even if we did change our mind already... Hahaha) glad your dinner was good, but too bad about the beignets, sometimes I hate trying foods that have been really hyped up, just in case I'm disappointed in them. Lol

That dinner looks so delicious! Anything with Mac and cheese is a winner in my book.

I enjoyed your impressions of each resort. I feel like I always mix the two of them up in my head so it's nice to hear a comparison of them.

It was interesting to read your comparisons between POFQ and POR, especially because, like you said, POFQ seems to be the favorite among most people. We haven't stayed there yet, but we have stayed in POR, and that is my favorite WDW resort (so far)!

I wasn't a huge fan of the beignets either - although that could be because I've had the real thing from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, so I'm a little biased haha.

Ewwwwwwwww at that glass.

The Port Orleans resorts have always landed on the bottom of my favorite resort list, and I feel like your description of the resort and the room quality kind of reinforces my standing. I know there are a ton of loyal POFQ and POR fans here on the DISboards, but I just don't see it. :confused3

Glad that dinner went well, though! Your dish looked very good, especially the Mac and Cheese part. :goodvibes

They were unexpectedly crunchy, and really just seemed to be a too-big vessel for loads of powdered sugar. They were difficult to eat without coating a 5-foot-radius in powdered sugar.

This was exactly my impression of the beignets when I tried them. I am already a messy eater by nature, so imagine the trail of powdered sugar I had following me! :rotfl2:

Nice drink choices pre dinner. I am a big sangria fan, so yum! I am so glad to hear you had a wonderful dinner there. I have never eaten there but I am a lot more likely to give it a try now.

I agree that POR, although larger, is more to my appeal compared to FQ. It was the home of my first onsite Disney stay and I will always love that resort.

I honestly can't believe a housekeeper did not change out those glasses. That's just gross.

Lovely pictures of POR! My family loves the Port Orleans resorts (although I have never stayed at either one). I appreciate your honest opinion on the resort. Boatwrights looks like a great meal, I love cornbread so I am intrigued by this "best cornbread in the world" lol

We finally got to see POR last summer and liked it's theming and decor.

Glad you liked your Boatwrights dinner. Those beef medallions must be the go-to entree since I almost always see those in dining reviews. The crayfish beignet is the only thing that I may be a little scared to try. Those crayfish are scary looking critters...ok, so you don't have an actual crayfish staring back at you but still....

I finally tried the powdered sugar laden beignets a couple years ago at D-land and was surprised at how "yeasty" they were. Not what I expected but good. Sorry that yours were more of a mess than a hit. They need to serve them with a handi-vac.

Dinner looks really good! I've heard good things about Boatwrights. But, even though we're staying at POR I didn't make an ADR there. :confused3

I'm sorry that POFQ wasn't your favorite. I loved it there, but mostly for the pathways and small size. Probably doesn't hurt that it was our first mod and we didn't really know what to expect. ;)

I was glad to hear your positive impression of POR! We're excited to try it out!

I have had the Belgian waffle, too. Soooo good! :thumbsup2

I was just at POR on Wednesday, so I loved seeing those pictures! :goodvibes It was so nice and peaceful there after having left a jam-packed Magic Kingdom. I have stayed at only one moderate - POFQ. I think Caribbean Beach will be my next mod, eventually.

Just a few days back into Real World, and after seeing your pictures, I would be fine with repacking and going back to Disney World tomorrow. :earsgirl:

HAPPY EASTER!

I'm surprised you didn't like POFQ and preferred POR! A lot of people like POFQ much better! I love POR, yes it's big, but it's manageable (at least the mansions section is, I don't know about Alligator Bayou!) and I feel like a lot of the really huge resorts (OKW, CBR) are just way too big to even walk through!

Boatwright's sounds good, I've stayed at POR twice now and I haven't eaten there yet! I wish they had breakfast there, maybe a character breakfast would be cute! They should have a Princess and the Frog themed character meal!

Great review of Boatrights! I honestly think this is the first time I've EVER read a review from there!

It's nice to hear your impressions of the resorts. I wonder what yall would think of values...

I don't think I've read a review of Boatwrights before reading yours! It sounds really good!

I'm glad that you were honest about the condition of your room at POFQ. It sounds like it could use a little TLC to get back to Disney standards!

Yay for Boatwright's...it's one of my favorite restaurants.

I've stayed at POR and POFQ and prefer POR, although the smaller size of POFQ is nice, and it's generally much quieter.

Too bad about the beignets...they do love to pour on the powdered sugar, making them SO messy!

That glass in your room...ewwww. I think I would've said something about it!
