Spending the first two weeks of May there - first week WDW and second week off-site for Universal etc.

I LOVE Cajun food and am wondering if there's any Louisiana natives or Cajuns on here who can let me know of any hidden treasures at Disney or off-site for this wonderful cuisine.

We're staying at POR so of course will check out the foodcourts there - also have dinner at HoB and a trip to Pat O'Briens at Universal CityWalk set up. We managed to find an off-site place called Jockamos which looks right up our alley (in fact sent another visiting friend from NC there who has spent his fair share of time in NOLA and he said it was great).

Let me know and thanks in advance :)

We stayed at POFQ 2 yrs ago and I know they have jambalaya and creaole fish and chicken meals. I'm not sure if this would qualify as outstanding cajun cuisine (what do I know...I'm a city girl from NY :teeth: ) but it is offered. I DO know that the beignets (sp?) are totally addictive! And POFQ is close by POR.

We had the most terrible beignets at POFQ a few years back. I'd much rather get them at Cafe DuMond. But that's a different trip.

Just had 2 lbs of crawfish last night for dinner. And they were great.

I've never had them, but I hear you can get beignets at the Port Orleans resorts. I can't imagine they'd be any good, since the secret to a decent beignet is that it's got to be served right out of the fryer. Otherwise it's just cold fried dough. I can't imagine Disney having someone manning the fryer all day to cook up hot beignets.

You might want to also try the House of Blues in Downtown Disney. I must admit I have yet to find Cajun food as good as it is here in Louisiana out of state, but it's still good eating. :cool1:

P.S. Hi Deb and Bill. I'm from Haughton. We're almost neighbors. :p I hope the crawfish prices start to go down a little bit. We are a family of 5 and usually get 20 lbs. We had some a few weeks ago but they were still fairly small. However, we had a wonderful dinner at Ralph and Kacoos last night. Their marinated crab claws are sooo good. :wave2:

When we stayed at POFQ (summer 2005) we had the beignets at the foodcourt and I was pleasantly surprised! They were freshly made and very large. My family fought over them with my teenage son saying, pitifully "But you got them for me..." They were too good to hog

I think they come in a set of 3? Lots of powdered sugar too.

DH had chicken gumbo at POFQ on Monday and it was really good. You can also get a muffaletta.

The beignets are served right out of the fryer to order at POFQ! The beignets come in sets of 3 ($1.99) or 6 ($3.99). They are addictive. They are best when it's not crowded - then they make them in smaller batches. BTW, we saw beignets at POFQ but not at POR.

Muffaletta? Don't I have one of those on my car??? :teeth:
Here's a second vote for The house of Blues and the prices are very attractive as well.

Thanks so much everyone... I'm trying to get as much Louisiana into this trip as I possibly can... the second week of our vacation was originally going to be in New Orleans/Cajun country and we changed our plans to spend the second week at the other Orlando parks.

Decided this literally about 2 weeks before Katrina and although I still wish I was going, I'm going to have to get LA to come to me while at Disney.... :(

I know it will never be as good as right in LA but someday I'll make it there, just need to appease myself with the Disney experience for now. ;)

Did you have the muffaletta? I haven't had a muffaletta in years! Are they good? And do they have GOOD sweet tea? I haven't had good sweet tea since moving from Shreveport. :guilty: This could really make the trip for DH.
Thanks!

This is good to hear since we're staying there in May :thumbsup2

We really like HOB. The food is good and the mixed drinks are VERY good. Our kids like it as well.

I agree. The beignets at POFQ are just not as good as the originals. :sad2: The last batch we ate there were hollow- just big pillows of air. At Disneyland, we have Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen in DD, which sells some excellent beignets. Those are the closest thing to Cafe du Monde that I've ever had. :thumbsup2

Jockamos is quite good and owned by nice people (or at least it used to be). If you are willing to spend a bit more, you can try Emeril's Orlando. Emeril's features New New Orleans Cuisine which is a blend of Cajun, Creole and a few other styles, but if you ask, you can usually get some solid Cajun food.

Nice... I wonder if they'd make me some etouffee at Emerils.... :teeth:

I don't know if we'll get there but we're going to make it a point to get to Jockamos for sure.

Thanks everyone (and Geaux Cajuns :thumbsup2 )
