Cafeen takes it slow in Sept (and not by choice) – 23 Sept 2010 – 01 Oct 2010

Great Update! Enjoyed all the pics especially the ones of Italy, which I do think is my favorite country in WS...maybe since I am half Italian?
Via Napoli looks good, doing lunch there our first day and I can not wait although I hope we get a better server.
I hope the new P&S camera I bought works as good as yours on my trip, my last trip I took my fuji bridge camera which takes awesome pics but I found it rather a pain to lug around for hours on end, so gonna take my chances with a P&S and hope for the best.
Years ago I use to use a 35mm before the days of digital and took along my 200mm lens. I love photography but taking along all that equipment is just not something I want to do now that I am older.

I do the same thing with my straw wrappers in fact DH usually says to me "why do you do that"? :rotfl:

Ahhhhh Tweeking ADRs :) I so hope this year to just make them and forget them but I doubt that is possible, I am usually there checking almost every day for better time

OK - caught up. I am a ride chicken, too so I know all about those butterflies. In ToT I can't talk at all in the queue because I get so nervous. lol!

Boma looks so great and so do the African beers. Hummusses or hummii? :rotfl2:

Awesome day 3.

Epcot looks like a blast, too and I am officially a LeCellier lunch fan. It's so good and so filling you don't need to eat for the rest of the day. Love the cheddar cheese soup.

Great pix with Stitch!

Wait - I wasn't caught up. :rolleyes1

cute Hidden Mickey outside Mission space.

Yummy, yummy dinner. I am eating there in May.

Great illuminations photos!

I used to be a huge fan of Italy, and still am to some extent. Don't really have a favorite anymore, guess that means I gotta explore even deeper this year :).

Via Napoli was very good. I'm chalking up the server issues to that one particular server and the restaurant being brand new. I'm sure by now, if he's even still there, he's gotten the hang of things.

Which P&S did you get? Mine was the Canon Powershot A1000IS. It was a nice little camera and shot quite well inside the optical range. Digital zoom isn't good though :( (is it ever?)

I picked up a Lowepro backpack for my Camera bag. Since I bring all my camera stuff to work each day, getting used to carrying it around. It's pretty comfy and should work well. No tripod holder though, so I'll either jury rig something up there, or just carry the tripod in its bag (and probably dump in a locker for much of the day time.) I am also looking to pick up a Tamera 70-300mm lens soon too. It's cheap and a "pretty good" lens. But it's "pretty good" throughout the zoom range, as opposed to some that are excellent 70-120, then horrible 120-300 (or vice versa, or roughly equivalent focal lengths)

I have only 1 more reservation that I'm not really happy with. I may just change the day to Magic Kingdom and pick up CP or something for breakfast. ME should be coming around 1:30pm... so lunch may be pushing it. If only Epcot had breakfast TS other than Akershus...

Excellent update, Allan. Your pictures turned out great. I'm still debating if we are doing Illuminations this trip or not (it's probably third on my list of favorites after Wishes and Fantasmic). Your food at Via Napoli looks yummy and I'm really looking forward to our ressie there.
Thanks Kathy :). I know I'll be catching it at least one day, from Hacienda. Will probably head over there by 8:30-8:45 on my EMH night too. (Or the following night). I'm not actually that big of a fan of the shows... but Fireworks look nice on "film" and it would be a real test for me to shoot them.

Via Napoli was great and I'm sure you'll both have a great meal.

Allan, your pictures are absolutely beautiful! We didn't get to see Illuminations last year because of our dinner ADR times but hope to see it this year.
Thanks Lisa :) I didn't see normal Wishes last year, so we're even :p (Though, other than from the Poly, doesn't look like I'll catch them this year either.) I also haven't seen Fantasmic, nor have any desire too... I'm just not a show type of guy :p.

I'm normally good after my first couple of rides or two, but coasters get me. Though, I must say that reading up on them and getting enthralled with the mechanics and science behind it all has quelled the nerves considerably.

Boma was wonderful. It was one of the two places that Mom just had to return to this year (me too :p, but one of like all 17 or so!) I'm not really a beer drinker so much, but I do like trying different ones. I don't know my lagers from my pilsners (or even how to spell that one!), and I am horrible at ordering ("Umm... I'd like to try a beer... but I don't know what I like normally... surprise me!"), but it's a good time anyway. (And, at 32 years old... well, 31 during the trip... I still feel weird drinking alcohol in front of Mom). And I have no idea of the plural of Hummus, so I like Hummii.

AK day was a fun time.

Le Cellier was good. I do think it's overrated, but not bad. I just think it's way overhyped and can't live up to that hype. Although, I must admit that the hype is dying down since the changeover. While I, on the other hand, am really looking forward to the new menu :p

I just had to get a pic with Stitch. He was all alone with his handler. Poor guy :(. Luckily for him, some kids came up all excited just as we finished, so I was glad I could bridge the gap. Hopefully I'll get a few more done this year (I typically avoided them... and one even snubbed me! But that's later in the story).

I think Mom actually spotted that Mickey. She had glanced through my Hidden Mickey book that I had brought to the resort with me and liked pointing them out. I didn't bring it to the parks or anything, but was more of a "just in case I get bored" thing.

Dinner was very good there. I had been looking forward to both the new restaurants (I was also the center of information for them until they opened up).

-----
On the upcoming trip, as I've mentioned, I'm not too looking forward to Marrakesh. It's getting pretty awful reviews right now, and I don't think it fits well as far as time is concerned. I also completely forgot that it was the 40th anniversary the weekend I leave (more specifically, the day). So I'm thinking MK will be nice in the morning. I'm sure it'll be busy though... I guess we'll see as time gets closer, though I may want to grab an ADR somewhere.

I looked into changing my flight out (since they changed it on me), current flight leaves Orlando at 4:30pm and I get to Mobile at 7:30pm (there's a time difference too, so it's 4hrs). Next one leaves Orlando at 5:30pm and gets in at 11:00pm... (as does the 6:30pm flight out). Not to mention the cost of changing said flights...

Ok, another small change of plans...

I removed Marrakesh after some back and forth and added.... Crystal Palace at 8:10am! Yup, a solo (male) character dinner. It's Disney, anyone who looks weird at me can go stuff it!

I also moved over to MK that day as it's the 40th Anniversary. Don't know if anything's going on during my half-day, but at least I can say that I was there :p.

Other than the potential cancelling of Mama Melrose on the DHS day, I'm quite happy with my reservations now and seriously doubt I'll be changing them from here on out.

Whew, man I go in spurts. It's been 11 days since I updated this. I've been busy and quite distracted. While I don't have time to get something up right now (have to get ready for work in a few), hopefully I'll post something either during work hours (obviously only during my breaks and/or lunch period... of course ;)) or after work tonight.

At this rate, I'll be September again before I finish this thing ><, we're not even halfway done yet. (Granted, once I get solo, it'll likely go quicker as there's less to talk about...)

I bought a GE 14MP 8x zoom touch screen, I have played around with it a little bit but not nearly as much as I need to since it has so many settings to experiment with plus it is touch screen something which I have found hard to get use to. The zoom is nice for a P&S but I like the zoom on my Fuji more as it is 18x if only it wasn't so combersum to lug around the parks

I make my ADR's in 10 days and I have decided to book 3 Character Meals, all breakfasts, DH knows about two of them but one is going to be a surprise
Crystal Palace hopeing to get an 8:05am , Cape May since we are staying at the Beach Club and Akershus mainly hopeing to get an 8:10 am so we can enter WS before the park opens and get some nice pics.
Planning on Boma's for breakfast on our AK day, yes I decided to go back there after all , if it was not for Bomas I would be booking Tusker House too :)
I am also considering adding MNSSHP back into my schedule since I ended up with a free Friday evening, I will probally decide for sure much closer to October.

No worries when you get to it you get to it, I hate seeing trip reports end so the longer you draw it out the better :goodvibes

I almost forgot I came across this site which is devoted to people who love Disney Photography, in fact they are having an event when I am there in October but I thought of you when I signed up to the site.

Don't feel bad about not updating. I am the same way. I haven't finished up my trip report from last May.

I know what you're saying by cumbersome. It's one of the concerns I have for this coming trip. My equipment already almost fills the Lowepro 200 backpack that I bought, with at least 1 more lens to buy before the trip, plus carrying a tripod for half of it, I'm getting a little concerned if it's going to be more trouble than it's worth. I am getting used to carrying it though, since I do bring it to work every day.

We both really enjoyed Tusker House last year, and I knew it would be another must do. I hemmed and hawed a bit about CP, whether or not I should do that, or The Wave or something non-charactery. I decided to just say "Pfft, most of these people will never see me again. Those that will, would likely be the type of people to get it anyway" so I went for it. I was kinda shocked that I got the 8:10 time slot. Of course, that means I'll have to get out the door by 7:30 at the latest ><. I also figured that CP would be less creepy than me at Akershus hehe.

Speaking of Akershus, I'd love to do that again, if just for the potatoes! Cape May sounds good too, been wanting to try that one, but I don't think I'm going to be able to until either I drive myself down there, or drop the money to stay in that general area (though, I'm thinking of renting DVC for next year, likely over at Boardwalk... so it's a possibility).

I'll be getting around to actually updating soon(tm). Work's been all work-like lately, even when I'm not "on-task", I'm doing work on other responsibilities I have. And then at home, I'm doing work on another project that I've been working on for about 2 years off and on.
I almost forgot I came across this site which is devoted to people who love Disney Photography, in fact they are having an event when I am there in October but I thought of you when I signed up to the site.

Thanks for the link, checked it out quickly before I took my evening nap (which turned into bedtime it seems.... from about 6:30pm to 11:30 pm ><). Have to dig deeper, but it certainly looks like it has a bunch of good stuff on it.

Welcome aboard! I have a confession to make. I had started following your PTR when I saw it was around my came dates :p. I don't post much outside of my "comfort zone" (my thread, and the restaurant boards... I even barely post on those TRs/PTRs of people who drove me to post a bit more over here :P), but I have been reading bits and pieces.

As far as late September, it will vary. 2009 I went and it was sweltering. Every day was mid 90s and 150% humidity. Last year (2010), it wasn't that bad. I think it was mid 80s to low 90s every day and wasn't nearly as bad as the previous year. Then again, I could have been adjusting, since I had only lived in Mobile for about 5 months before 2009's trip, and add a year to that for 2010's.

Outside of weather (of which it only rained on my twice, and neither time was really for that long), crowds (low to non-existent), decorations, and the MNSSHPs make it a great time to go.
Don't feel bad about not updating. I am the same way. I haven't finished up my trip report from last May.
Yes, yes, I know :P, but to go from posting an update (or two!) every day, to skipping almost a whole week, to then nearly two weeks! I had to get to my TR via my own signature to find it :p.

---(this is how I separate out quoted responses to general ones)---
So yeah, work has been throwing me curve balls left and right lately. I'm currently working on the new State Enrollment piece for the entire state of Alabama (for those parents from Alabama... um, sorry about the start of school last year, I wasn't on that project though ;)), heading up the environment setup (servers and all that fun stuff) for testing the new release of our AL distance learning piece (which isn't bad, since I've headed up testing of that application since we started developing it two years ago), being swamped with assisting others in getting installs of our Health application running (it's tricky to do it on our QA servers, and no one follows directions...), playing IT for the QA department in maintaining our servers and such (it's amazing how much disk space we take up...), supporting the testing of our Assessment platform (the main application that I've been testing for the past 6 years), handling and maintaining the Production Support web-application that I developed last year (fixing bugs, adding some small enhancements), and lastly trying to continue on my QA Tools application that I started in December (currently is mostly just a Database tracking and meta-info piece). Suffice to say, with that huge long paragraph, I've been busy. I can't complain much though, the more that I'm responsible for, the more integral to the company I become, and then less likely I am to be one cut if that time should ever come (we're still hiring though, so it's not likely to happen any time soon... unless we completely flub up this summer's releases).

So yeah, now that you have that super exciting look into my work life... (and I didn't realize how many things I was really juggling until I wrote it all out, it tires me out just reading it all!)

On the other side of things, I've just been working on my own home project that I've been developing for almost 2 years off and on. It's making progress, albeit slowly (but, it keeps my development skills sharp) and just playing a lot of PC games and reading quite a bit (Kindle on the new phone is a dangerous thing ><).

Also have a few new pics to share. (Clicking on each will open up the full size image (which is rather large... sorry for those still stuck in the stone age))

LOVE this picture!!! How long did you have to sit and wait for the bee?

I'm glad you are following my PTR, and don't feel you have to post just nice to know there are readers!

I am excited about MNSSHP, I think we will be going on the 27th and the 30th!

Love the new pics of the flowers/nature, it is something I have always loved taking shots of, in fact I was so very excited to attended the F&G Festival at Epcot two years ago but then did not nearly take as many photos as I would have liked, it is hard when you travel with others you do not share your passion for photography, I can understand going to Disney alone.
In 2006 I went with a friend for a weekend and as luck would have it my friend had to leave early , but it afforded me the luxury of spending my entire last day of doing nothing but walking about AKL taking photography of the resort and animals while I awaited ME pickup.....pure heaven with no one to keep rushing me along

I actually didn't have to wait that long. There is a whole row of those bushes (they're actually bordering the dumpsters outside the office :p) and the bees were swarming them that day. Only a couple days after I took them, the flowers were gone as were all the berries (there are lots of birds nearby).

I'll also likely be at MNSSHP on both the 27th and 30th (as well as 23rd :p). I am planning on spending quite a bit of time working on my photography those nights... we'll see how that goes though :p.

I really really want to go for F&G, but I don't know if I could handle the "crowds" (keep in mind, I'm used to late Sept here, so even 4s and 5s are "super busy" to me :p). I do prefer the nature/scenic to portraits, but that's because I don't like dealing with people :p.

Allan, your pics of the flowers are breathtaking.
Thanks :). I like the way they turned out.

Ok... I'm writing now, expect our Monday morning to be showing up shortly! If you remember my 2009 report, there's something special about DHS that we missed (well, a few things, but something big that I knew we'd not be able to do)...

Day 5 pt 1 - DHS Morning, Sci-Fi Lunch, and a shortened day

Well, it's now Monday, Day 5. It seems like it's been almost two months now, but it's only the 5th day. It's amazing how things work like that!

Ahem

We got up in the morning and were out the door well before noonish! In fact, we arrived just after Rope Drop! We stampeded with the rest of the late Sept non-Fantasmic PM-EMH day "crowd" and arrived to Toy Story Mania which was showing a 20 minute wait! So, without further ado, we hopped in line

I just found this pretty darn funny.

We overheard a group behind us with the same Hidden Mickey book that I had bought, they were talking about this one, so I figured we may as well find it.

I also forgot to charge my camera batteries here, and this indoor queue was draining them a bit quickly :(. So, I turned it off here to save some power for later.

Now, TSM was alright. It was certainly a fun little ride. I don't think I'd wait much longer than the 20 minutes we waited for it though. Of course, if I had little ones, my opinion may change, but until/unless that happens, I'm not that impressed. (That was a LOT of commas there, it's probably a grammatical horror, but oh well.) I don't remember the score, but I think I pulled ahead during the bonus round.

After TSM, we headed down Sunset Boulevard toward Tower of Terror. My mom was the one who really wanted to do this, and I couldn't chicken out on something that my mother would do right?

(This came out really well, never really noticed until now)

I love the detail with this queue area. It's a shame that it wasn't busy (20 min posted wait... was less) as I didn't get to soak it in. I think I may make a sign saying "If I'm standing here taking pictures and there's no one in front of me, feel free to pass" for next year... So many things have interesting subjects, and with no lines, it's tough to get them all in.

At any rate..

Now, ToT was great! I'm so glad that I'm not a ride chicken anymore (when I was a kid I wouldn't even do BTMRR! Even the tunnel with the wheels going by in World of Motion scared me...) This, along with MS, are probably my two favorites down there now.

After ToT, we picked up FPs for RnRC (30 min wait, and lunch was fast approaching), and then headed over to... um, the area that Sci-Fi Dine In is at. By this time, my feet were killing me. Stupid blisters! The blisters also caused me to walk weird, which put even more stress on my already tired feet. We checked in and then hung around the little park-like "blue square" area until our buzzer flashed.

However, before this all happened (well, after we got the FPs, but before we headed toward the restaurant), we hit up the Great Movie Ride. We skipped this last year, but it was one of the few things I had previously enjoyed at MGM, so we had to do it again. It was alright, I remember the sets being a bit more impressive... Ok, back to the flashing buzzer.

Now, this installment doesn't have much food porn, sorry. But, I had onion rings and a burger for my app and entree. If you've seen one normal order of onion rings and a cheeseburger, you get the idea.

For dessert I picked up some cake thing that I don't know the name of now. It was only mediocre. The cake was overcooked a bit. We also got a couple small lidded glow in the dark cups filled with popcorn, as it was the little (well, not that little, he was somewhere around 8-11) kid's birthday in the row in front of us.

It looks yummy, but I could have passed.

After lunch, we headed back to RnRC to use the FPs. We hopped in the FP line and waited... and waited... and waited... Well, after about 20minutes of zero forward movement (and feet still aching something fierce), we decided to head out of the park for the day. It turns out that RnRC was down and we wouldn't know when it would come back up... so I guess that was a good choice!

I have not been on ToT or RnRC before but thats because my 6 year old daughter is a big ride chicken too so I usually sit out with her

Day 5 pt 2 - The Yachtsman, Goodbye Mom, DHS EMH
So, a month ago I left DHS after waiting in line for a broken down RnRC! Well, in the story it was only just now, but, um, oops. I'll get into that later.

At any rate, we headed back to the room and I took a nap while Mom explored World Showcase a bit. It wasn't very exciting, I was asleep. No, I don't have any pictures.

Soooo, we had ADRs over at the Yachtsman for 7pm, and we headed over there a bit early. I love the look of the Yacht Club resort, and it's so huge and, um, stuff. Unfortunately, until I win the lottery, shorten my trips, get that non-existent promotion, or otherwise can afford about 2-3 times the cost of my trips, it's out of the picture for now. I do remember that we stayed here for our last family trip back in 1991. Don't remember much about the resort from then though.

We walked around for a bit and stopped in the Gift Shop. I had been looking for a certain polo style Mickey shirt since I got there, and figured it'd be a good place to look for that sort of thing. I was right, and $55ish later, it was mine. Mom bought the special deal towel for herself. (And then I wonder why I never have extra money :p).

Pictures...

Soon enough, it was time for dinner. We checked in and got our table quickly. I was really looking forward to this meal, as steak (if you haven't noticed) is something I kinda like.

Tomato and buffalo Mozzarella - Didn't really like this too much, but I'm not a big fan of fresh mozzarella. Also, not sure what was up with those clear jelly-like things. I bet if I did like the stuff included, it would have been very tasty though.

NY Strip - This was very good. Not sure what kind of sauce was on it, but it was tasty. The au gratin potatoes were also very very good (I think?)

Banana Napoleon - I'd go back just for this dessert alone. It was so very good. Banana will end up being a very good theme for this trip too.

After dinner, I said my goodbyes to Mom and was set free. I looked around and it was just around 8pm, with Epcot closing at 9, I figured that my original plan wouldn't work. However, DHS had pm hours that night, so off I went.

I waited at the dock at the Yacht Club for a little while, and tried to take some pictures. They weren't that great... but here are some of them:

And that's the last of the pictures I have for this day. I didn't take a single one at DHS... strange, I know. I am planning a DHS night this next trip, so between that and my new camera stuff, it'll be nicer. I actually didn't do that much at DHS either, I headed down to RnRC and hopped in the single rider line. This time it was working too! After RnRC I needed to try out ToT at night.

RnRC was pretty good. I actually felt like we were going too slow through the inversions as you can actually feel yourself coming out of the seat, typically inversions are supposed to have enough g-forces to keep you in your seat. My glasses (which were old and pretty loose) also kept threatening to fall off, which would have been bad. Overall, it was fun, but not something I'd say would make or break a trip.

ToT at night though, just as amazing as during the day, but slightly more as you don't get blinded when the door to the outside opens! After those two rides and some people watching while taking my breaks, I headed back to CSR for the night.

Tomorrow would be Epcot in the AM, with MNSSHP at night!

I have to agreee about the Yacht Club, we stayed there in '94 before the BW and BCV so I am excited to be staying at the BC this trip. I thought about staying at YC again but the cheaper rooms were not available for our dates and CL IMHO is overated for the price. When we stayed at YC we were upgraded to CL(was called concierge then) we still went to our TS breakfast every day and that seems to be where people say the value is eating breakfast in the lounge.

Have never been to the Yachtmen Steakhouse but the food looks good. I am curious to about those clear jelly-like things on your app :confused3

Glad you were able to find the Mickey shirt you wanted even if it was a small fortune :rotfl:

I have been tweeking my ADRs, still not sure about going to MNSSHP although I do have one night open just in case, of course it happens to be a night that the tickets are not discounted so it will not matter if I purchase them early or not.

Do you buy yours early? To tell you the truth I am a little leary since last year I bought tix for MVMCP then we had to cancel our trip so I ended up giving the tix away. $100+ is nothing to sneeze at

YAY an update!!!

I would love to eat at Yachtsman Steak House, the food always looks good. I don't think you can go wrong when you put banana in a dessert!
