Cable modem question

UGH! TWC just sent me a postcard saying that starting November 1 they would be charging me $5/mo to "rent" my cable modem. (we were at Disney until the 10th so I didn't find out until after the fact)

I am just going to buy one to avoid the charge in the future.

I currently have a Ubee 2.0 provided by TWC that I will be returning.

I see that now there are 3.0 models out there. We currently have about 25mbps running for upload speeds.

Do I NEED the 3.0 or would a 2.0 like my current modem be sufficient?

Thank you!,

Dawn

Well, I know it will work, I am just wondering if the 3.0 will give me any faster speeds?????

Dawn

If the 25mpbs is all that TWC says it is providing an upgraded modem won't make it any faster. The provider determines the speed so it can charge more for higher speeds.

I got the same letter only my charge is $3.95/mo.
We seem to have so much trouble with the modem now I'm afraid if we get our own it'll end up costing more by TW refusing to service it or by paying more for a service call.
We're going to pay it until we get a chance to check out brands etc..

What would be the point where one would need a 3.0 modem?

You are better off buying your own as long as you have someone to help.

3.0 is better than the 2.0 because it can (if your cable company is set up for it) just to different carriers to get you the best speeds/service you can get for what you pay for. At my cable company, we have 4 upstream carriers. If one of the carriers is having a slight issue, the modem will jump over to another carrier. Same thing for the downstream carriers.

Ah, interesting. I have no idea how to even find out that information.

Thank you,

Dawn

Setting up a cable modem is not rocket science. Newer modems have the ability to process the higher speeds that you're paying for. Look into the specs of the modems and find one that will suit your needs for 25mbs. The ubee 2.0 might not be able to process all the way up to 25mbs, the Ubee 3.0 allows for speeds up to like 100mbs.

Generally if you return your "rented" modem before the end of the month, they'll refund you the amount. We went with a rented modem for a few months to find the right modem for the speed we have, which is the Ubee 3.0.

I already get 25mbps with the 2.0. I have run the tests and typically get right around 25mbps.

Get a 3.0; if TWC offers faster speeds and you want to upgrade to one in the future, you'll be ready.

If the price difference between the two is minor, I would get the 3.0 -- if either your cable provider or you decide to upgrade your internet speed in the future, you will have the proper equipment already.

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I do have a TWC story!

Ah Dawn. Such a button you have pushed for me!

We also have TWC and received notice that we needed to buy a modem to avoid paying the (for us) $3.95 a month charge.

So on the internet they have specific models that we can use. I order the modem from Newegg. Printed out the instructions from TWC. They said we needed an eMTA, which TWC would provide. I go to the TWC store. The man there said they just ran out and come back in 2 hours.....yada yada yada.

After 3 visits (looooooooooooooong lines next 3 visits) I finally get in a line that is a 45 minute wait. I ask for the eMTA and the woman proceeds to tell me that we (meaning me) already have one. It is on our existing modem from TWC. I thought I had to turn that in? No, you need that for your phone and TV. The new modem is just for the internet.

So, let me get this straight. I have to buy a new modem so that I don't have to rent it from TWC.
But I still use that one from TWC for the phone and TV. So I spent $55 for a new modem and I now have 2 modems running.

I love TWC. Especially that first man who made me come back 3 times for nothing.

Helpful thread. We are in the same position. Next to no notice for increased charges, as if I don't pay them enough already. I will also be looking for the ubee 3.0.
Thanks for the info

The funny thing is, Ubee isn't even on my approved list! But I have one right now!

I just installed my new 3.0 modem tonight. I went ahead and bought the one with the built in router. Comcast had been trying to get me to upgrade for a couple of years, but after the bunny chewed through the power cord for the router last night, I decided it was time to bite the bullet.

Everything went very well, except I don't know how to change the ridiculously long obscure password. Oh well, at least it is printed on the label on the bottom of the modem.

YUCK!

I hope we don't have 45 min. lines.

I don't know what an Emta is.
