OK so i finially talked DH into going cable modem. The kit arrived last night and the hook up is easy right until we try to get on the net. So I'm back on a landline for the time being.

I have figured out which is the USB cable and whic is the ethernet cabel. Directions say the ethernet cable is better. BUT I got blinking lights all over the place.

The PC indicator light on the modem is blinking AND there is a blinking light somewhere in the ehternet connector on my hard drive. The Data send/recieve lights on the modem kind of go on. But don't stay on.

We tried the USB cable last night and the disk that came with it but the disk didn't run the way it was suppossed

I just know its going to be something extremely stupid. Its 75.00 for the cable company to come do this. If I'm paying 75 bucks they're gonna come dill a hole where i want them to, even though they refused when i moved in 4 years ago cause 4 other rooms in the house have cable connections.

FYI

The we are spliiting the cable cord with the tv and tv works no problems.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!

DH spent hours on the damn thing last night going through the computer when it owrks perfectly. I don't want him doing that tonight.

Have you talked to the cable company to get the modem provisioned? Provisioning is what the cable company does to detect and authorize the modem for use on their network. Most cable companies have a help desk who will attempt to walk you thru the process.

Second - if you are splitting off the cable to the TV, you may not have enough signal strength at the modem for it to pick up a signal.

Who is your cable provider?

Here are some links that may help:

Your cable company has to register your modem's serial number before it works. You would think they should have already done that before sending you the kit, but double check.

Ok so i looked at the ethernet install tutorial. I pretty much did all that correct right from the get go. The only thing i didn't do was physically unplug the surge protector from the wall b4 powering everything back up.

My provider is COX cable and i guess a stop there for a live chat is the next thing on my list. I hate to do that though since dial up won't allow me to follow waht they say without getting off and getting back on.

Has anybody here split the modem between tv b4? I admit the tv is in a nother room but its a long cable that came with the modem and why it wouldn't have enough power i have no idea. They even sent the spillter.

My only other option for the Coax cable it run between another bedroom and this office but it'll run right by the door of the guest room and someone might trip over it. Splitting it with the tv is the least dangerous option other than moving the entire office. Which i didn't want in the spare room anyway.

I don't think that's the problem cause we have an IP assigned to the modem. Found that last night.

Dh called and gave some crap about how w3e need to switch off dial up and re set it up or something. I don't know what he's talking about. Course b4 breakfast i have no idea what a lot of ppl are alking about but we had aol disconnected last night and didn't get anywhere.

I am sure you tried the reboot sequence, correct.

turn everything off>start the modem and wait for all the lights to settle down as much as they will (sometimes 5 minutes or more)>then start the computer.

we have had up to three splitters at some point. And not the high quality ones they usually provide. You should be OK.

yup tried that. i get 5 nice little steady lights, not a dimmer on any one of them. Start the computer and the blinking fest begins. :headache:

Modem hook up is pretty straight forward.

You take the cable line in (via splitter or straight line). That goes into the back of the modem.

Then you take ethernet line from modem into the back of your pc.

You can always go with a wireless router if you need to avoid issues with cables and such. You would just need a wireless card for the pc (pretty cheap)and about $60 for the router. honestly a router is the best way to go. you can use your laptop and various systems (xbox, ps3, etc etc) on your home network also.

Just got the 1 desktop. Not adding anything else , and i don't really care about the cable in the hallway. I just need to remember to take the cable off the computer and out of the hallway when we eventually go to sell the house. Till then its fine. It was enough of a battle to convince Dh to go off the dial up.

As for wireless all i know is that if its not encrypted anybody in your neigthborhood can steal it. I'm fine with the cable.

Putting a password on your wireless take 10 seconds so that is not an issue. Plus your network won't be that powerful that your neighbors will be trying to steal a weak signal.

But the point was that going wireless removes the need for a cable going anywhere. Just set up the modem and router wherever you want near the splitter and you are done. You can set up your PC anywhere. Plus if you want to move it or such, you don't have to worry about the cable.

My cable company came out and installed my modem for me. Won't your company do the same?

For $72.00 sure it will. But it also said it was an DIY thing. the DIY project has so far cost $6.00. And when i find out what it is I'm missing cause I know its something stupid. Its always something stupid. I'll be glad i paid only $6.00.

OK great. BUt i live in the semi-dark ages and i actually like it. I really don't want or need a wireless connection. TY for the suggestion.

You might still have a problem with the splitting of lines. When we went to cable, we weren't using a splitter inside my house, but unknown to us, there was a splitter outside, so the signal inside wasn't strong enough. I also tried the self-install and failed because of that and eventually had to call the cable co to come out figure out what was wrong. GOOD LUCK!!!

CABLE STORIES
we kept having to reset our router/modem
tech at the cable company says it is not receiving a strong enough signal.
He says they have to turn our "speed" down to keep it from crashing. OUr house has 1958 phone wiring which is sloooooowwww, not meant for data transmissions. I hook the router directly to the junction box outside (actually it is DSL) and there is a super strong signal. He said once we fix the wiring he will bump up our speed again.

so we spend the money and time to move the modem to the basement so we can run a brand new phone line more easily, right from the junction box on the back of the house.

I call back and say "OK bump up our speed again" and new tech guy says " no, you have achieved the minimum speed guaranteed in the contract. Sorry" we are guaranteed something like 17k to 30K and we hit 17.5

so all that work and money, but at least now it does not crash every day.

Mikeeee

are you using a network cable to the computer or a USB?

Ouch!!! My company installed mine for free - I also did not have to pay for the modem - just the monthly service.

When DH bought a new laptop we got wireless. It took DH most of a day, calls to the laptop company (Sony Vaio), the cable company (Comcast), and the router company (linksys, N-series). I don't know who helped the most, but all 3 were needed for some aspect. If we had known all this up front we would have paid someone to do it!
