Cabins vs moderates

Hi,

I have booked my first ever stay in a FW cabin in January and am starting to wonder if I have done the right thing.....

We usually stay in a moderate resort, but have had a run of noisy neighbours, and decided that a 'detached' cabin would be the perfect solution. My concern is that I will miss the convenience of the transportation at a moderate - are the FW buses that bad? Will we have to drive everywhere?
Do you think that we might feel less of the magic?
It will just be me and my BF in the cabin - are they comfortable? We are used to sprawling on our bed and watching the TV in a mod room, is the living area in a cabin comfortable?

Have we done the right thing??

When we stayed in the cabin, the detatched feeling was part of the charm in staying there. Out there by yourself, but not really.

The busses can be a pain if you are always in a hurry. With a car at your front door only steps away you can always drive if you wish.

I believe that there is more MAGIC in a cabin stay than in almost any other place.

As far as being comfortable, you will have plenty of room available for making your stay comfortable.

Don't worry, I am sure you will enjoy your time in the cabin and FW.

We have DVC points, both at the Boardwalk and Beach Club. My wife and I would rather stay at FW in our Motorhome. The kids also like it there, they stay in a cabin when are there together, although Emily (grandbaby) likes the BW. The cabins offer more than a moderate resort ... certainly a more 'homey' feeling.

FW is a special place, and cannot really be compared to any other resort on property. If you like to camp, or have your suroundings a little 'woodsy" then you will love it. Also the privacy is nice. The car out front is handy also, like Old Key West ... you will soon tire of waiting for the bus.

You should at least try it ... you certainly won't hate it. It may turn out your family likes the 'busy' enviornment of the resorts, with shopping and dining more at hand. But you may flip over the special feeling of being at FW.

Don't worry. I would say try it. We are like you Sam. We stayed at FW with our family as Newly married couple and didn't know if we would have privacy that we wanted. We like to sprawl out and watch movies too. But FW has a charm all it's own. You definitely won't be bothered by the neighbors. But if you do want to go over and meet your neighbors you can do that too. FW has lots of things the other resort/hotels don't have like the carriage rides and boats on their lake. I would encourage you to rent a golf cart. This way you won't have to take bus inside of the camp ground. But if you want to go over to and see a show or into Oralando you have your car. FW is great.

My family has both stayed in a moderate resort, and brought our travel trailer to FW. We much perfer FW. It is nice that your car is close, but we park it for the duration of our stay and use Disney transportation. We don't find it a "pain" at all. Sometimes you do have to wait, and most destinations it takes a transfer to another bus / boat / monorail, but they deliver you much closer to the gate than parking. We enjoy it as part of the whole Disney experience. Just make sure that you get a transportation flier when you check in so you know how to get around. (If you are a Type A kind of person, drive instead. You will not be charged for parking at the parks.)
The atmosphere at FW is much nicer than the moderate resorts. There is a lot to do (walking, hiking trails, peddle boats, kyacks, Tri-Circle D Ranch, biking, etc.), and a lot of room to do it in. Although I haven't been inside a FW cabin, they appear to be larger than a moderate resort's room plus you have an added benefit of a deck / porch complete with a grill.
I would definately go the FW way!

We loved our stay at the cabins. The buses are a pain but I like driving every where any how. So it wasn't a big deal for us. There is so much to do at Fort Wilderness you could spend a week there without going to the parks and never get bored. It's a good choice. Have a great time.

Thanks to everyone for your positive comments . I am looking forward to trying the cabins - I suppose I am just having a bit of a wobble as I am so used to the moderate resorts.

I guess we tend to drive a lot anyway - the only thing we will miss is the boat to Downtown Disney - but then again, as you have all reminded me, there are lots of other benefits to being 'in the wilderness'.

Feeling much better about it now

Just hop in your car, drive over to PO and go for a boat ride to DTD. Now you won't have to worry about missing out on the boat ride and you'll have a really great time at FW to boot.

You can take a boat ride from Fort Wilderness to The Magic Kingdom, The Wilderness Lodge for dinner at Whispering Caynons, or The Polynesian Resort to enjoy a drink in the gardens. Better yet, time your boat ride so that you can view the electric water parade from the boat!
