BWV -- Is this a bad idea?

So...if you sub-let an apartment out, those people wouldn't have the right to ask the landlord basic questions or requests?

I own property and one tenant does sub-let half the house out and I do not treat that person any differently than the original renter. I have basic responsibilties as a landlord and as long as the monthly rent is payed in full, I do not differentiate between who asks for me to check on a dripping faucet, or a noisy refrigerator fan, or even a noisy neighbor.

By your logic, I should tell this person to have the main renter call me to request I fix something. What purpose does that serve? I still have to do the same work. It doesn't matter who made the request.

WildArticMan,

Based on your posts, what I gathered you were saying (my interpretation) was that you feel entitled to the same benefits as DVC member if you are renting points. And, other than calling member services for reservations and requests, I think you will find that you will get all of the same benefits. Most people who have rented points have reported that their room key states DVC MEMBER and this entitles them to certain restaurant discounts, free valet parking and *GASP* pool hopping (except over holidays).

I don't feel that I am an elitist, but I did feel that DVC members were being bashed because we really don't want to pay more in dues than we have to. I currently pay $150 a month in dues and while calling an 800 number might not seem like that big of a deal, if you have never seen a monthly WATS line bill, you would be in for a bit of a shock!:o

I'll be at BCV over New Year's, feel free to come on sit by me. I promise I won't treat you like a second class citizen (sign is optional) and my DH will probably try to convince you to buy! :p

There are probably some landlords who do require this. Do YOU have to do this, of course not. But when Disney has over 60,000 owners, they have to have a way to control this. They (Disney) chose to do this by dealing with owners only and only after verification.

Nope. I do not feel entitled to full benefits that DVC members enjoy.

I looked long and hard into buying DVC and I know all the benefits of owning. I also know I don't qualify for pool hopping and the various discounts as a renter (even though it appears most people who rent still get those benefits).

I DO think I am entitled to at least call MS and ask about a room request if one was made or at least verify that my resaervation is in the system and correct. Even if I used a travel agent for a trip, I would expect to be able to do that much on my own.

I just get extremely hot under the collar when a carte blanche statement is made that I have no right to call MS. Common sense dictates that it's much more efficient for me to handle basic things myself rather than burdoning the person I rented points from, especially when the thing(s) I may call about do not take up any more time than if the owner had called and should be able to be handled by even the poorest trained MS worker.

Wow, $150 a month for dues I had no idea. I stayed one time in a BW studio, not my cup of tea. I have thought about renting points for a 2 bedroom, but now it sounds risky to me after this thread.

Wow! I had no idea DVC members were so harsh. I think after this rental I'll stick with CRO. IMO there seem to be lot of DVCers that rent points, but perhaps the DVC should re-think their policies if you all are so unhappy with renters. Maybe Disney can build rental-free buildings.

$150 a month is VERY high. If her dues are $150 a month, they must have for 600-700 points or more.

We were one phone call away to my broker from buying into the Wilderness Lodge Villas last year with 210 points and the dues were not even close to that (I don't remember the exact amount but it was around $50-60 a month when you averaged the cost over 12 months.)

As the OP I just want to say that I never thought my query would go this far, but...

Anyway, I just want to say that I was ENCOURAGED by the DVC member I am renting from to call MS to check that the reservations were now in MY name. The woman I spoke with at MS also encouraged me to call back if I had any other questions.

Unlike many WDW policies, DVC is a contract and deed and the rules are spelled out and agreed upon by buyer and seller clearly.

I don't think the members were being harsh as much as stating written fact. Misinformation costs them money.

Remember the poor guy who's phone number was 1 digit off from the Do Not Call list # and he was getting 100's of calls an hour to say wrong number? That cost him thousands in phone bills and the carrier would not do a thing to help him out.

DVC members have to follow rules and those that rent points should also.

Renting points can save you a great deal of money and that's why many do it.

No one but MS will know you are renting if you don't tell them and I'm sure you won't be treated differently. Heck, I stay offsite and receive fine treatment whenever on WDW property. That's why we continue to return. If they treated us like third class (right behind the renters LOL) citizens we'd go elsewhere.

I do think a call to verify a ressie is appropriate but most members will send a res. confirmation to the renter from MS so that may be redundant, but all requests to change or add should go thru the member.

You do not have to rent points to stay at a DVC resort but if you go through WDTC you will pay rack but you can call them as much as you want.

And yes....the member that pays $150 month in dues is LIVIN LARGE!!! at WDW

I also pay $150/month in dues. I have 500 points.

I have 500 points. My dues are $88.49 and $61.29 (I have 2 accounts) a month. Not quite $150, but pretty darn close.;)

There are plenty of members who have 1000+ points. Don't even want to think about their monthly dues!:o

LOL!!! Well, I think that explains your opinions/attitudes about DVC ownership vs renting.

I know how much 500 points costs to buy and maintain. I guess if I had chosen to spend that much cash on DVC, I may look down on renters as well and expect preferential treatment.

My passion is boats and at times I know I'm guilty of looking down on folks with smaller boats that take up valuable space in the marina.

First, I don't look down on renters, nor do I have a problem with others renting out their points. Some members do, I don't. Will I rent out my points? Probably not, but that's because we end up using all of them. I would encourage anyone who wants to stay at a DVC resort, is considering buying or needs more room to look at renting as it can be an awesome deal and wonderful accomodations.

I certainly don't expect perferential treatment either. I bought into DVC for the accomodations and the accomodations alone. The other perks are just gravy and if they go away tomorrow, then so be it. I do care about issues that affect my dues, as do many other members.

I hope the OP has her issues/requests resolved to her satisfaction and has a great trip.

I didn't pay rack rate when I stayed at the BWV's, and have checked several times since and the villa side has always been available for my time frame when AP rates are offered. I think I would go through the regular Disney channels and not rent.

Let me just say that the reason DH and I are even renting is two-fold.

(1) We want to buy into DVC but want to "test" it out first and be sure it's something worth doing. I am a college professor and can get the Swan/Dolphin discount which saves money, but I'm wondering if there's something more appealing about DVC's Deluxe Resorts. So forgive me all DVCrs for wanting to be a part of your 'elite club.'

(2) We are renting now because it saves $$$ and we are then able to try out different Resorts before choosing a "Home" Resort.

I never expected to be treated as less of a person because I am merely a renter nor did I expect that some DVCrs would act so high and mighty on these boards. I could completely understand both sides of the story here but I never expected to get some of these responses....from DIS 'friends.' I only wanted to know if I should take a chance with not making a room request or just play luck of the draw when we arrive at check-in.

Thank you TIdoublegaER. I think I do. ;)

CRSNDSNY,

What a good idea it is to stay at the DVC resorts to see if it is something you would like to persue. Enjoy your trip! :D

Most DVC'ers are very friendly and caring. You are doing the right thing by renting points first to see if DVC is for you and your husband.
You have every right to call MS to make sure your reservation is in your name and all set .

We have been memnbers for 5 years (OKW-300 pts VB-300 pts) and it is the best thing we have ever puchased. Four other members of my family are also DVC members. If you do decide to look into DVC just PM me and I will give you the name and number of our guide, who is very low pressure, returns calls, etc.

You may also want to look into the re-sale route. "Good Luck" with whatever you decide.

Thank you, ncligs. We will definitely do that. We'll probably make one more trip staying at the BCV before we make our final decision. We definitely want to buy BCV or BWV if they are available...resale may help ensure that. You've been so nice to me...thank you! :)

Thank you, Tinkbell....all of this reassurance (especially from members) is very encouraging and helpful! ;)
