Buying passes and Magic Band and FP

We are new to Magic Band...it started after our 2013 trip.

For this trip we have 4 people buying 2 AP and 2 Hoppers....but we were all planning on buying at check in....

if we do that do we lose all the fun perks of the magic band? (of which I don't really know)

and are we missing the ability to book FP in advance too?

If you do not purchase before hand you do miss out on the fast pass + before trip planning.

we were hoping not to buy our $1000 passes until the trip next year. I guess we will think about it earlier...hmmm..

Can you purchase the bands before your trip?

You don't purchase the bands. You enter all your information (includng park ticket numbers) into DME. You will get instructions on updating your Magic Bands by choosing color and adding your name to your bands. The bands will be shipped via UPS a few weeks before your trip. If you don't personalize them you will receive gray bands at check in. Have a great time.

so we get bands no matter what if we go in DME and put our color requests in?
so then we arrive at the resort, buy AP and they put AP on magic band at that time?

so then if we have AP ahead of time and put in DME we can do the FP+ thing 30 days out...

Mostly correct. It's MDE (My Disney Experience, or some people use MDX), not DME (Disney's Magical Express).

The bands are linked to MDE. The passes will be linked to MDE. They aren't "on the band," but are accessible through the band.
