A guide told me that I can not buy a DVC membership when I am in Nebraska because it is illegal here. He said that if I want to buy, I will have to be on a trip to WDW. Does anyone know if this is the case? Any Nebraska members out there? Thanks.

I'm not from Nebraska, but I do not doubt the DVC guide's statement. They have to be up to speed on the various state's laws.

There are several states that regulate timeshare sales quite closely. In a nutshell (and very generally), developers cannot sell or solicit sales for a specific timeshare to a state's residents unless/until the state regulatory agencies approve it. Some states are very slow to approve new offerings. Anyway, until Nebraska says OK, the DVC people cannot talk to you over the phone or send you any sales materials about any DVC property that hasn't been approved by Nebraska.

In the meantime, you can buy a resale contract, wait for Nebraska to approve SSR, or take a trip to Florida and buy there.

I'm not entirely sure, but you may be able to buy one of the other DVC properties directly from Disney over the phone. If OKW, BWV, VWL, HHI, VB or BCV interest you, call the guide back and specifically ask if Nebraska will allow themn to talk to you/sell you about those properties. (Nebraska may have already approved those properties. DVC is pushing SSR, but they will sell the others if they have the points "in stock" and the customer insists). FWIW, if I were interested on one of those, I'd very seriously consider a resale contract. You'd most likely save a few hundred dollars going that route.

Best wishes-

You can purchase the DVC Resale packages in Nebraska! :cool1:

Thanks, CarolMN. I appreciate the explanation. I know I can depend on this thread if I have questions.

Hi there! DH and I are from Omaha. So nice to meet another Nebraska DVC member.

Your guide is correct. You can not purchase DVC-either an original contract or an add on directly through Disney.

Something about Nebraska Trade Law prohibits direct Disney DVC Timeshare purchases.

I had our Rep double check this out both with DVC's Attorney and also we checked through our private Attorney.

We were so bummed to hear this. We had wanted to add on and the points were available for our resort and our use year. At the time we could not spend the cash to go to Florida to purchase the extra points and at that time our next trip was 5 months done the road.

That being said. You can purchase DVC points through Resale. We did this and everything went smoothly.

Another thought is-do you own property elsewhere? Like a cabin in Iowa? Iowa does allow direct Disney DVC purchase.

Take care!
Renee

Hate to add into the bad-news chorus... We ran into the same problem and I'm not even legally a Nebraska resident (Active Duty Military, home state PA). We purchased our first contract through the resale market. We are planning on adding on during an upcoming trip to WDW because it can be frustrating getting the right Use Year and point size on the resale market. But, for an initial purchase, I heartily endorse going resale.

Hi, former Nebraskan here. :wave2: We bought when we lived in Omaha, but we had to do it while on vacation in Orlando. We bought in July 2003 when BWV points were available. Lost a whole park day buying and closing on it. They gave us a bunch of meal certificates we used on our first trip "home" though. Ok, now someone has to have a Godfather's pizza for me! ;)
