Buying DVC from Australia

I'm based in New Zealand and bought SSR resale. Just tried to ring and buy some add on points and dvc wouldn't give me any info as NZ is not on the list. Could anyone tell me how this process works for direct add ons. I have December use year. I'm going to WDW in Nov 2019 so can follow up. But was just curious how small add ons work when buying direct, if you are an existing member. I'd be interested in SSR, AUL and OKW as an add on. Thanks for any advice on this. I know I can buy resale but the small re sale contracts are quite expensive and scarce and go quickly hence I was considering going direct.

As far as I am aware for Australian and NZ can only buy direct while you are at Disney unless the rules have changed.

You can buy resale anytime from Australia.

For purchase direct from Disney it depends if DVC has stock of points at your resort and the same use year as an add on. I also believe older resorts are not sold to new owners.

I would call your guide. If you don't know your guide, call the same number for Member Services, but choose Sales. Tell your Guide the dates that you will be at WDW and that you want to buy SSR points while you are there. You might be able to make an appointment. This way, they might be able to have some points on hand for you.

As mentioned above, you can buy direct when you are on Disney property. (Buy it while staying at WDW, DL or Aulani on travel.)
For SSR and OKW, the minimum direct, for an existing owner, is 25-points if paying cash and minimum 50-points to finance. I believe Aulani is the same.

As also mentioned above, these minimums will require that Disney has points available at one of those resorts in your current UY. Disney is very reluctant to sell small contracts without matching up the UY.

Edited to add: Oh, I like the idea above of calling ahead to tell your "guide" that you have an upcoming visit and plans to purchase. The idea of giving them lead-time to find your points might be helpful!

I thought that DVD changed documents so that they now can change UY's on the points that they hold.

Ah ... we did read about that, didn't we? Haven't "seen it in practice" yet ... but probably wouldn't recognize it if I stepped on it. ;) Hopefully it will help folks like the OP!

Thanks for that handy tip. I don't have a guide to ring though as I had bought resale. When I rang membership services and then tried their chat line they told me they couldn't give me any info due to being based in NZ. Maybe I should just ring membership services again and try and make an appointment time. Just wondering does anyone know if they would give my brother the information if he rang as he is in San Francisco.

Likely!

FWIW, when we purchased in 2004, DVD was not licensed to sell in California. So we, being Californians, routed all our paperwork through a friend in Oregon where DVD was licensed. After the sale closed, we processed an address change on the account. It was slightly messy ... but worked.

We are DVC owners living in Australia.

Yes, correct you can not buy DVC direct from Disney in Australia.
You need to be WDW, DL, Aulani or on a DCL Cruise to purchase DVC direct from Disney. They are not legally able to send anything to Australia for your purchase. All of this will be completed while your at Disney.

You can buy reseal from the Timeshare store while in Australia.
Not 100% sure how the resale process works. But we are interested in learning more as we are thinking of adding points sometime in the future via resale.

Keep in mind as a DVC owner overseas all prices and anual dues are in USD.
So conversion plays a big role in affordability. For an Aussie buying DVC just factor in you will be paying pretty much double than a US resident (or more) in AUD.

Buying DVC resale is easy. Deposit and final balance by wire transfer which your bank can arrange. After the deposit see how much money was actually received as some intermediary bank will take a fee and then add double that amount or more to the final balance. Left over money is allocated to your maintenance fees.

There are other places apart from the Timeshare Store that sell resale DVC. From my purchases The Timeshare Store are great to deal with, they help you through the process.

We bought three resale contracts from Australia, and added a direct contract at WDW.

The resale process is straight forward, if lengthy. Documents are emailed and funds can be wired (usually $20-$40 bank fee). As the Buyer, you do not need to have any document notarized for the florida resorts. If you buy from another international person, you will need to apply for an ITIN (I was quoted variously $50-$200). So please factor the inconvenience into your offer price.

Buying direct is easy. Walk up to any DVC booth when you're on site, they arrange a van to take you to a sales center, and points are loaded into your account before you finish eating the $15k ice cream (for the 75pt minimum contract, YMMV!). The guides will try their best to sell you the current resort.

Good luck with your purchase decision!

After reading this thread it sounds like my guide is wrong.. however he told me that once international buyers were owners in their system, they can contact these owners directly no matter where they reside.

We used to get calls in the middle of the night. They can contact you but can not sell to you unless you are at WDW or one of the other sales centres.
