Buying Direct: How does banking and "last year's" points work?

We are on the waitlist to buy more VGC points direct. I know all about resale and have weighed the pros and cons and have decided that direct is the way we want to go for this resort at this time. Right now, we actually have a little more money than time.

We've been on the list awhile and I spoke to my guide recently and I have a reasonable expectation that points might become available within the next 1.5 years. As such, I am already dreaming of a potential extended family trip within the next 3 years . . .

So when you buy points direct how would this work: I have a December use year. Let's say we buy 200 points after Dec 2014 but before Dec 2015. Would we get points immediately (i.e. 2014 points) and then get another set on Dec 2015? How does that work when they "give" you - lol - "last year's points"? What would I be entitled to?

Thank you, dear experts! :worship:

we are in ROFR on our second resale contract for VGC. We bought our first resale in 2010. Hopefully we will have more points by December. We are hoping to plan a big trip next year. From what I understand with direct purchases, you get current year points. If you have a December use year you would receive 2014 points prior to December and 2015 points december 1.
Good luck

My Guess is since VGC is in high demand, they won't give you anything free.

If you have a Dec UY and buy after Dec 1, 2014 and before Dec 1st 2015 you will receive 2014 points and 2015 points. The 2014 points can be banked and since buying direct they also will allow you to bank them even after the banking deadline of July 31 if that has already passed. If you got the points before the end of Dec 2014 then you would owe pro-rated dues from the date of signing the contract thru the end of the year - so 31 days or less. If the points came after the first of the year then you will own pro-rated dues from that date in 2015 thru the end of the year.

Your comment about less time than money is interesting since at this time buying VGC resale will almost always get you points faster than direct so I'm a little confused. Other than the wait for ROFR, which is what most people concern themselves over with resale, the actual time to make an offer and sign a contract doesn't differ much from direct. Actually - direct paperwork is more involved.

If you could get the contract today, you would get the full compliment of points from the Dec. 2013 Use Year and the same number of points on December 1, 2014 and December 1, 2015. The same will be true if you purchase direct between December 1, 2014 and November 30, 2015 - you would get the full compliment of points at time of purchase and the same number of points on 12/1/15.

With a direct purchase, DVC has always included points from the current Use Year and the same number of points at the beginning of the next Use Year ... and you would also be able to borrow from the following Use Year based on when you wish to travel. (There is one exception to that policy - when resorts first open, there may not be points available for Use Years prior to opening (or declaration thereof) so some Use Years may still not have any points available until the beginning of the next UY. When we purchased HH, we had an OKW contract with a June UY. HH opened in March, 1996 so there were no HH points available from June, 1995. We did not get our first compliment of HH points until June, 1996.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks everyone, this is exactly the info I needed! And it also happens to be exactly the answer I wanted to hear! :cool1:

KAT4DISNEY, you make a very valid point that I hadn't thought of - that in this buying resale would likely take less time than buying direct. My reference to timing had less to do with actual lead time and more to do with hassle and emotional outlay. I am stretched extremely thin in all other areas of my life.

DVC and Disney travel are my one impractical, emotional and frivolous pleasure. I'm highly practical about everything else in life. The price difference isn't large enough for me to want to deal with resale. I'm just going to enjoy having the points magically become available one of these days and appear in my account. :santa:

I am such a Disney sucker, lol!

(But yes, if I were buying any other resort - which I can't see myself ever doing - I would almost surely buy resale due to the immense cost difference!)

I can completely understand stress but I'd be the opposite with waiting for an unknown time that the points might magically appear. For me it would be less stressful to know I had a contract in ROFR and that I'd be very likely to have my points in 45-50 days. ::yes:: With cost not being that important you could go in with an asking price offer and be almost certain you'd get thru ROFR although you didn't mention if it's a small contract or larger.

30 day wait vs 365 or 547 days or ????? :faint:

Would be comfortable doing something like I did a few years ago?

I was on the direct wait list (twice) for VGC. While I was waiting (although the wait didn't seem quite as long as what you seem to think it will be now) I made offers on resales.

I got ROFR'd twice. In the meantime, one of my direct wait lists came up, so I bought a small number of points.

Kept looking resale, and the second waitlist came up, so I bought a slightly higher number of points than the first time.

Again, kept looking resale, and on the third attempt, we passed ROFR and had gotten all the points we had hoped for, with a little over 1/3 of them from the resale contract.

If you think you'll be waiting a year and a half, you could fill the time by making a full price offer for a stripped contract, thus lowering the chances of Disney ROFRing you, and you still might wind up with points before the direct ones come through, at a lower price.
