Buying an add-on with the same use year

I currently have a Oct UY, hoping to find a small contract with the same use year for my home resort (AKV).

Even though I would have two separate contracts (my current one for 160 pts, and hopefully an add-on for around 25 poitns), would it function the same as if I had 180 points in one contract? i.e. would I have to specify anything different when making reservations, or banking/borrowing points?

If they are the same resort, with the same UY, then they should act as though you have one big contract. But someone else on another thread mentioned that she has both Jambo House and Kidani points and she was asked which ones to use when making her reservation.

Once Kidani is open, I am not sure that this would still be the case, but for the most part, you would be able to combine the points at 11 months for your reservations. It just may take a little extra mention to MS to make sure they know you want to use all the current UY points from both contracts before any borrowing takes place.

It is DVC's goal to combine them but they don't always do so. If they don't initially, they won't go back and combine them later. The names on the contracts have to match exactly. You can't add another person or subtract a person or even list your name differently and have them combined.

I purchased a small add on through resale at a different resort with the same use year so I took Deans Advice, as soon as I signed the closing papers I called member administration, I told them that I just bought a resale and wanted it added under my current membership, I gave them the contract number that I was buying (it should be on the closing docs) and they noted it in the computer and I didn't have a problem they listed it as a sub contract of my original contract.

if the contracts are combined like that, if you decided to sell them later, could you still sell them as 2 different contracts?

is the main reason for doing this for ease of use , or another benefit I'm not seeing?....
thanks

Yes, they are legally separate.

Even if you buy your contracts from different sources, such as Disney and Timeshare Store, if they have the same use year, they will usually be combined. My contracts are at OKW and BW, and they are combined. I got mine thru Disney and Jakki. MS always asks which points I would prefer using, though. At first I didn't think I wanted my contracts that way, but it's nice, because I can combine the points if I need to.;)

I have a question similar to these. I am currently in the process of buying a 50 pt AKV contract through resale (we are in the 30 day ROFR part of the process) and am planning to add to this later this year with a 50 pt BWV contract also through resale. Does it matter that much what UY I look for? The AKV is a Dec UY. Would I want the BWV to also be a Dec UY? What if I wanted to use points from both contracts for the same stay? Is it easier to do this if both contracts have the same UY?

Yes, you would want the BWV to be a Dec UY also. 1) You’d be able to ask DVC to put both contracts under the same member number, which would allow you to pool points from both contracts at the 7 month window to reserve a single night's stay and 2) you’d have the same banking window for both contracts. It’s just a lot easier to keep track of.

What if I wanted to use points from both contracts for the same stay? Is it easier to do this if both contracts have the same UY?

To be clear: you would not be able to use AKV pts to book BWV at 11 months, or vice versa. It just means that if you are booking a stay at the 7 month window, you can pool pts from both contracts to book a single nights stay.

If the contracts were separate UY months (and thus, under separate member numbers), you could still book a stay at 7 months by booking the first 3 nights with AKV pts and then booking the next 3 nights with BWV pts and asking MS to link the 3 night stays…but lets say that leaves you with only 6 or 7 pts left on each contract and you wanted to stay for 7 nights. in that case, you would not be able to pool pts from both contracts to book the last night… you would have to borrow pts from the next year’s allotment from one of the contracts to complete the 7 night stay and bank the leftover pts from the other contract. It’s just a lot more complicated…

For this situation you'd be much better off with the same UY. For larger contracts I don't think it matters that much and actually can be a benefit, but not necessarily so for smaller contracts.
