My family is taking a 12-13 hr road trip in Feb, and I'm looking to buy a relatively inexpensive (but reliable) DVD player for the trip. Any advice? I am looking at either buying two or one with two screens. Any benefits to getting two vs. one?

I have a built in one in my van but I also bought a portable one for Christmas at Best Buy for $80. It's a 7" Magnavox and has a really clear picture. It also came with a battery and cable to plug in the car.

I bought 2 inexpensive $80 each at Walmart. This way each kid has their own, no fighting over which movie, or who is sitting closer to the screen.

Beware buying a cheap one (or test it first). we bought a Poloroid brand and every bump seems to skip the movie or freeze the screen. My wife had to eventually hold it in her lap for my daughter so it would work smoothly.
I then bought a Sony and it works great-you could drop this thing and it continues to work. Well worth the $$$

ITA. We spent the extra money on a Panasonic. Amazon reviews on the cheaper ones were iffy. We've had it since Christmas 2003 and it still works perfectly. We loved it so much, we bought a 2nd one for the "kids fighting over what to watch" factor. Still love them!

I bought two "cheap" ones and have not had any issue with them.

They are both Mintek MDP-1730 and I've had for 2 years and not had a problem. Granted, they are pretty much only used on road trips, but the picture is clear and the sound (with headphones) is quite good. I've had no issues with skipping either.

Not bad for paying around $30 a piece for them at Kohl's. They were the Black Friday sale two years ago. Were suppossed to be $120 or so with a $30 mail-in rebate. When I bought them, Kohl's had the price in wrong so that I got it for $90 (I think they put the price AFTER rebate in their computer). I then mailed in and got the $30 rebate. On top of that, in each box was a set of coupons for 10 free movie rentals at Hollywood video. I estimate that taking all of that into account, they came out to about $30 each.

Thanks, everyone. I think we'll go with a slightly better quality (to avoid skips) and get two (to avoid fighting).

I did look at some reviews on the ones I was considering, and they weren't great. I didn't think about reading the reviews until it was suggested here. I love the DIS. :)

We had a Polaroid for 2 years, and it worked great. Never any problems with skipping or freezing. I got a new SUV with a drop down TV, so my kids used the portable in the play room for a while. It would still be great, except DD4 dropped it!:lmao:

My suggestion to you is 2 players, because of the age difference in your kids. DS and DD will never agree to a movie! My other suggestion is that unless DD 11months will be forward facing by the time you go, you may want one of your players to be 2 screens. More expensive, but I think it would be worth it for her to be able to see Wiggles or Barney on the ride. We also used computer speakers to plug in instead of headphones. We "mounted" them using the headrest. My DD had trouble keeping the headphones on, so it made it easier. It also kept the noise level down for DH and I. Hope that helps!

We bought an EXPENSIVE audiovox and it lasted about 4-5 months. We used it MAYBE 10 times. I will NEVER buy an expensive one again...these things have HORRIBLE warranties. Audiovox would not replace it and neither would the retailer. I got one for Christmas from my DMIL and we have used it a couple times...so far so good. It is the 7 inch Durabrand and I think it was about $80.00 at WalMart, DSIL has had this one for awhile and she hasn't had any problems with it either...

hmm, i have a poloroid one from walmart, and its works amazingly! ive dropped it a couple times, and it still works great.

We have a Panasonic and it has been great. Make sure you look for the swivel screen, then you can attach it to the back of a headrest if you want. We take ours everywhere, in the car, dance rehearsals, etc. It's even nice to take to places where there won't be much for kids to do, then they can t least watch a movie without disturbing the adults.

My DD has the "Durabrand" portable DVD player (in hot pink) and my 2 nephews also have them (one blue, one red). No problems on car trips. No problems with skipping. Good picture, good sound. Cheap investment - and they came with a wall charger as well as a car charger. I think they were around $70 each.

It used to be that with Costco's return policy (pretty much lifetime return as long as you have the sales receipt and all the accessories), you could feel safe buying any electronics there. They've changed that recently, and now limit returns to 3 months for any reason, 6 months for defectives. With that said, most problems show up in the first 6 months, and portables often have 90 day warranties. So it's probably still a good bet to buy from costco.

I'd highly recommend Panasonic portables if you can afford one and find a nice sale. They have the longest track record for making high quality portables. If you decide to buy a cheaper unit, the Mintek portables are pretty decent. The first two I bought had problems and were replaced (first a battery charging issue, then a screen issue). But now that I have one that works well, it has performed flawlessly for about 18 months. MDP-1020 is the model I bought at costco with a 10" screen. I think costco still carries them.

If you are going to have 2 kids that want to view programs, definitely consider the dual display model. Generally the viewing angle on the portables is limited, and getting two to watch one screen could lead to complaints. Although with how cheap some of the 7 inch units are, you can probably buy 2 separate players for about the same price as a dual screen player.

With portables, consider getting an extended warranty given the use by kids (at least my experience has been things tend to get slightly, uhm, beat up). J&R Music World sells extended warranties by Repair Master and you can buy the warranty regardless of where you purchase the player. For one repair in the 2-3 year warranty, it will have paid for itself (a 3 year extended warranty for a player under $200 is $19.99). However, since prices on the portables are in the $100 range, it may not be worth it (especially if you don't mind replacing stuff). But if you are spending close to $200, it may be worth the extra $20. . . .

Get two. DVD players are God's gift to parents on long trips. Can't imagine the drive without them.

if you have a target store go there and look. we got a dvd player with dual screens and dual dvd's. My kids are 12 & 13 and never want to watch what the other is watching, but it also plugs in the back and they can watch the same movie!! best move we ever made.

I saw that Target has one on sale this week. It has two screens that attach to the head rests. And the main screen can come out to watch movies in the hotel. Pretty nice.

Back when we were shopping for ours, Audiovox was one of the cheapies. Then again, this was in back 2002 when a cheap one was $350 and a good one was $600-1000!

We bought our Audiovox in 2005, and it was about $350 or $400...to me that's expensive, and obviously not worth it...(for that one anyway);)
