Buying a laptop with giftcards safe?

I thought I remember reading recently that you should always use cc to purchase big ticket items. Hubby needs a new laptop and is buying an $800 one. Trying to get the most hang for our buck here. Kroger is offering 4x fuel points on gift cards, so if I buy $800 worth I get $16 back on my Disney Visa then will get 3 fill ups at the gas pump at $1 off (van holds just under 20 gallons). So it's a pretty significant savings, but is it wise? If we buy the laptop with the Disney Visa we will just get $8 in rewards but if it's safer, we will go that route, but hoping to save some money!

Edit to add we are buying the laptop from Amazon.

Do any of your credit cards offer price protection and/or protection plans if something happens to the device? Some offer price drop protections on certain items, some offer insurance type protection if something happens to your electronics, some offer nothing. Also, always think through your game plan for a refund. If this turns out to be a bust of a purchase and has to be returned are you ok having all that money tied up in Amazon$$? Because getting USD$$ back won't be an option.

That is a good point about the returns I hadn't thought of. Hubby' s employer is reimbursing $500 of the purchase, so we wouldn't be out the full $800 but definitely something to consider. Thanks!
