Hi All - I've been perusing the boards and find all your information very informative and helpful. My husband and I are looking into possibly purchasing DVC in a few years and are starting the research process. I've had a question that I haven't seen answered yet, so I thought I'd pose it here.

We are thinking of buying a small contract now (approx. 125-150 points). Resort and UY TBD. My question is if we decide we want to buy a 2nd contract later on (as our family grows in size) for say another 150 points and we buy it for the same resort and same UY, could we use the full 300 points to get our home resort at 11 months out?

I feel like this is a super obvious question and the answer is yes, but I wanted to confirm before we added that idea to our planning. We're the type of people that will definitely buy where we want to stay and at this point in our lives only need a studio, but the 1BR and possibly 2BR may be needed in the future, and this thinking may be able to get us into DVC now and allow us to "upgrade" our membership later on.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.
Suz

Yes you can! I am new here and still researching to buy myself but I know that much!! as long as its the same resort and same uy, its almost like having one contract for use I believe. I am sure other more experienced owners will chime in.

Yes you can. The key is to have them titled identically.

Another benefit is that buying smaller contracts and adding on allows you to increase available points but later they are easier to sell.

Not to make it confusing. But even if they were different UYs, you could still combine the points for bookings at 11 months out. It just requires transferring the points over. It's also way more complicated to mess with, so if you can help it, it's best to keep the same UY.

I have two UYs for VGF and it makes things harder to keep track of. I did it bc I got a crazy good deal on the 2nd contract (VGF at $123 a point with all points), but the savings is not worth all the future headaches.

I'm close to selling the smaller contract and buying another one that matches the other UY.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by titled identically? That sounds like info I should bank away for a future date. Thanks!

Make sure the names match on both contracts. If you decide in the future to add a 2nd contract but want to include additional persons (like your children), it won't work.

Makes sense. Thanks!

Don't add any names or delete any names on the second contract from the first. If it is the same UY, the second will be an add-on to the first.

There's no guarantee they can be combined though they almost always are currently if they are titled EXACTLY the same, this is something that could change in the future, esp for resale. I'd go through the several months of educational process and make a preliminary decision on the number of points and home resort including the 2 contracts. How reasonable the options are likely to be to add on later depends on where it is. For OKW, SSR, or AKV it should be relatively easy, for the rest of the WDW resorts finding the right contract is going to be more difficult, then there's always the question whether they'll be combined into one master which is not guaranteed. Since you're looking at studios now, you need to seriously consider the number of points and home resort. Studios are more difficult to book, esp AKV value, BWV/BLT/BGF standard. I'd want a cushion in this situation of at least 20%, more if looking at the cheaper views or lower seasons. I'd be inclined to split the difference between what you think you need now and what you think you'll need in the future and go in between or at least be open to contracts that would fit that situation as it'll give you more options looking for the BEST contract.
