Buy Nothing Groups

In case you are looking for a way to rehome goods directly in your community, check out your local Facebook Buy Nothing group.

I just found two groups for my small town and was able to give away a bunch of things. The intent is to donate and recycle without charge to the recipients.

I love these. I belong to 2 of them on FB and it's SO much easier that constantly having to drive to drop off donations. I still donate clothing bags but use these groups to get rid of when I have random items and housewares, old kids toys, etc.

I just joined one local to us. We've been using FB Marketplace a lot to sell off a bunch of things that we are trying to clear out of our house, but we have an old treadmill that we've been trying to get rid of. Garbage won't take it and it's still in working order (it's just 25 years old), so we're looking for someone who will take it for free. I've thought of taking it out to our curb to see if someone will take it, but if nobody comes to grab it, we'll have to haul it back down to our basement, which I'm looking to avoid.

We gave away an old treadmill this way. It needed a new belt, and had been stored in our garage, and we now needed the extra space. We had a neighbor come get it the day after I offered it up for free. He messaged me a week later thanking me again for it. He had replaced the belt and was enjoying using it in his own garage.

If no one bites, though, you can always call a junk haul away service to come get it. For a flat price, they will fill up a portion of their truck bed, so it's a great chance to clean up your house and get rid of any other large items at the same time.

I love my buy nothing group. I’ve given and received a lot of things on there. It’s great for kids clothes. I just saved a bunch of money by getting a bunch of clothes from my group for my daughter.

We have 2 in my town I use all the time- I got so many medical things from there when my mom was dying- got a hospital bed, walker, wheelchair, bed alarm, adult diapers and much more and then when she passed I gave it all back out the same way. I used it when I cleaned out her belonging and this weekend I am putting 2 dressers up on the buy nothing page.
