But Rhett! Where Shall I Go? What Shall I do? Frankly, m'dear... a MAY 2010 PTR

Hijacking for a quick question since you're all so knowledgeable about MAYcations...

You all know I'm wanting to take my DBro9 in October or November. However, yesterday I got a PIN yesterday for 30%/35%/40% through mid-June. :cool1:

Soo....I've been working out prices for a week-long trip in May around the May long weekend so DBro is only missing 4 days of school. The travel dates would be May 22-29th. Is this a good week? Bad week? Busy week?

I've never been that week. We have been there during Mother's Day week twice and the crowds were low. I have heard that the later it gets in the month, the more crowded it gets. But I'm not sure how crowded exactly. :confused3 Maybe someone else will know. . .

Good luck! :goodvibes

Our 1st WDW trip was last year from 5/23-6/6. You should be there during a Star Wars weekend, if he likes Star Wars this was really fun. It makes DHS busy on the weekends but not as bad during the week. Having never been before I don't really have anything to compare it to :sad2: My husband said it was the best time he has had in his life and he hates crowds - so either it was not that bad or he was just on :cloud9: the whole time and didn't notice :goodvibes

Oh you know I love to talk about WDW dining! Or any food! ::yes::

MK let's see, we've done. . .

Crystal Palace - breakfast twice and dinner once. All great experiences! Food is excellent. It's always very clean, especially for a buffet! And the CM's and characters are always great!

Plaza Restaurant - we had dinner here once. It was very good. Service was kind of slow, but it was a nice experience.

Pecos Bill - we ate lunch here once, about 4 years ago. It was crowded and hot. All the tables were either full or dirty. I just remember standing there with heavy trays and wandering around looking for a seat. Don't even remember how the food was. We should really give it another try. . .

Casey's Corner - ate here several times. The kids love the corn dog nuggets! DH loves the hot dogs & toppings bar. I love the cheese fries!

Cosmic Ray's - are here once, on our most recent trip. We all thought it was just okay.

Aloha Isle - Yummy!! Gotta love the Dole Whip Float. :lovestruc

Main Street Ice Cream Parlor - stopped here for a snack once. The kids and I had some very good ice cream and DH had a root beer float!

I think that's it. Hmm. . . now I'm hungry! :rotfl:

Oh you know we can talk food!:lmao:

It sounds like everyone on here is in agreement with pretty much all the MK restaurants.
And yep- try Pecos Bills again. It might be good now- course it's been awhile since I was there too.

Thanks for your experiences!:goodvibes:goodvibes

So what are we talking about today??? popcorn::

Well, obviously nothing. Your fearless PTR leader has been doing other things today!
:lmao:
Sorry guys!!

I promise that I'll do Epcot tomorrow morning.

Hope everyone is having a great night!

PS--- yay for the PIN!!!!!!!!! Don't you just feel special when you get one????:lovestruc Hope you get to go in MAY. It's my favorite time to go!:cloud9:

We did Columbia Harbor House 2 days ago and it was super Yummy! Looking forward to trying either Caseys or Pecos tomorrow or Thursday!

But we shall end at Downtown Disney. Can't decide yet whether to try Earl for the first time, or Wolfgang Express for a second time. We started our trip there last year and it was by far the best CS of our week.

^^^^^^^^ Oooh- how's the trip going? hope all is well and the weather's been great!

I am looking forward to trying WPE in DTD. We've been to Earl and it is good- but it is just a sandwich place after all.;)

Have a good rest of the trip-- we're looking forward to a great TR when you return!:goodvibes

Thanks Jo! The trip is fantastic, and the weather is PURRRRFECT! We had rain late Sunday, but really late so it didn't even interfere with Fantasmic. Lasted into Monday morning but was gone by about 10 am. Other than that, high 60s and sunny every day!

I am putting notes together already and have taken some food pics. Once I figure out how to post those I will just need to think of a name for the TR and we will be in business!

As Promised- my Epcot dining list!

We tend to go back to places we've already been to before- DH really watches what he eats (No fried food, no fast food, low carbs), so we are sort of limited as to what he will eat and where.

And so-- here is where we have eaten before:

Future World

Counter Service--

Electric Umbrella - we only ate here once a long time ago, and weren't impressed too much. It may be better now. It has burgers and nuggets. Used to have a toppings bar for the burgers but is now gone. We often get nuggets To Go for my picky DD to eat.

Sunshine Seasons - Our favorite CS in Epcot. We like it so much, in fact, that on the last day of our last trip, we cancelled an ADR for Le Cellier and went here instead. It's especially good for a group who has different ideas of what they want to eat. DH ususally gets Sushi, I order the Rotisserie Chix or a salad and the kids usually share a sandwich.

Table Service--

Garden Grill -The only TS restaurant we've done in Future World. Eaten here twice- once without the kids and once with. The positives here are that the Character interaction was really really good, and the whole restaurant spins while you eat, overlooking scenes from Living with the Land. The food is just so so but I did like the fried catfish.

World Showcase:

Counter Service--

Cantina de San Angel- They have churros!:) This is an okay place, if you want some Mexican grub and are short on time and/or cash. Not too expensive- plus- did I mention they have churros???? ;) Great place to watch Illuminations.

Espresso Coffee & Pastries - Coffee fix, when you're on the UK side of the World.

Refreshment Port - McDonald's fix, Chicken nuggets and fries! Great for picky kids who know Mickey D's!

Kaki Gori- Snow Cones in Japan--- so great on a hot hot day in May! I like the Strawberry, DH likes the rainbow.

Boulangerie Patisserie -- France-- dessert. It is a must do for us every trip at least one night after dinner. The Creme Brulee is sooo good! Other desserts are great as well. We've never had anything bad here and enjoy sitting outside as it gets dark, watching the people shop around- just like being in an outdoor cafe in France.:cloud9:

Table Service--

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall - Had breakfast with the Princesses. My Belle met the real Belle and everyone was mesmerized.:goodvibes The Princesses we saw that day were Belle in her yellow gown, Aurora, Mulan, Snow White, and Jasmine- who remembered my DD later in the afternoon and asked her if she enjoyed her breakfast and thanked her for coming to see her. Such a wonderful memory.
The food is good if you like breakfast- I remember the cinnamon rolls being the best thing there, the potato casserole was good as well.

Chefs de France -- one of my least favorite meals ever on property, about 4 years ago. The place is just gorgeous, our waiter was wonderful and attentive. The food was just not good. I ordered Salmon and they had poured olive oil all over it. I mean it was floating, there was so much oil. IDK why? The menu has changed since then and they don't even have that item on it anymore, so I'd be willing to try it again; Plus- Remy's there now, with his cute little rat self.:lovestruc

Le Cellier Steakhouse - We've had both lunches and dinners here. Both times have been very good. We always get the filet for dinner. For lunch I've gotten the Grilled Steak Salad. DH also likes their Ceasar salad. The Creme Brulee here is very very good as well. The only negative I've ever found with this restaurant is that you are crammed in there next to people, like they are an extension of your party. I like my personal space, lol. A positive has always been- for us-- the wait staff is very attentive to my picky DD and gone above and beyond in trying to find something she will eat, including having the chef make her scrambled eggs a few times. (They were the best eggs my $12 could buy!!!:scared1: Yes- that's what I was charged.):rotfl:

Nine Dragons- Another disappointing meal. We ate there before they had their refurb a few years ago, so what we ordered is no longer on the menu. It was bad enough that I don't know if we'd go back, and we love Chinese food. The wait staff didn't want to give us any of what we requested and it was just a bad experience all the way around. We ended up eating again two hours later-- we were still hungry b/c we didn't eat our food.
I don't know how it has been since the refurb- I'd love to hear about it if anyone has eatent here since then.

San Angel Inn - Ahhh, what can I say? We are traditionalists. I have eaten at this restaurant once on every trip. It's not the food that we go for- it is just so-so to us and we have said upon leaving many times, "We won't go back next year". But it's a tradition and we continue to go. I have heard that it is a bit better since they revamped it a year ago, so we will see. It gets my vote as a wonderfully romantic place. Ask to sit by the water- tell them you'll wait b/c it's worth it.

And so that's my list. Thanks for reading.

Please share you experiences with all of us as well- we all learn by hearing others opinions!:goodvibes

Have a great day:goodvibes

Up tomorrow-----
Animal Kingdom!

Thanks! :thumbsup2 I'd really like to go too, but need to keep an eye on a few things. My car lease is up in April, so I'll be getting a new set of wheels then. I already have the money set aside for that, but a few things are creeping up on my current car to have it in good shape to send back at the end of the lease (stupid Canadian winters and the need for new tires)...

But, I'm scared to not do anything with this PIN in case nothing good comes out for October :confused3

Anyhow...going back to read your Epcot dining post and then post some of my thoughts!!

Ooh - your list looks yummy!!!

For CS in Epcot, I tend to eat at either Electric Umbrella or Cantina de San Angel. I don't love Electric Umbrella, just know that it's standard "burger and fries" fare. I think I'm going to skip it next time in favour of Sunshine Seasons - your review made it sound really good! And I love most Mexican food, so Cantina is usually a must. And, like you, I love the Churros! :thumbsup2

Some CS places I want to try are Sunshine Seasons, Yorkshire County Fish Shop in the UK (I LOOOVE Fish and Chips :lovestruc), and Tangierine Cafe to try their shawarma (Ottawa has a TON of shawarma shops, so I want to try for comparison purposes).

The World Showcase tends to be my go-to place for TS restaurants. It's one of the reasons I usually get Park Hoppers - I'll go to other parks during the day, and have ADRs somewhere in the WS. Here's a quick review of the restaurants I've eaten in.

Rose and Crown, UK - loved it! I had the fish and chips (shocker, I know), and my mother and stepsister had the vegetable curry. I don't remember what my stepdad had, but I know we all really liked our food. We were also seated outside, and it would have been PERFECT for viewing Illuminations if we'd had a late enough ressie.

Chefs de France, France - I made an ADR for my parents here since we were there over Valentine's day. I believe my stepdad had the filet mignon (or at least a steak dish) and thought it was good. I don't remember any complaints at least. It's on my list to try, but probably not on my next trip.

Teppan Edo, Japan - One of the best meals ever!! :thumbsup2 It's the restaurant where you sit around the grill and the chef prepares your food right in front of you. My whole family loved the interaction and performance by the chef. Also, Paula Abdul was there the night we were since they were just opening the American Idol experience at MGM. Jo - I think this place might work for you and your hubby since the food is very fresh and you see exactly how they prepare it. I highly recommend it!!

Restaurant Marrakesh, Morocco - This was a last minute ADR on our trip in February because our ADR at WCC was too early for our liking. I don't remember being overly wowed by it, but we were seated in a back corner where it was difficult to take in the whole atmosphere of the place.

Biergarten, Germany - I was there on my short October trip. I think the make or break for this restaurant is who you're seated with. We happened to be seated with a great group of people who we chatted with all through dinner - two hours went by before we knew it!! I remember thinking the food was okay, but nothing to write home about. It's more of an "atmosphere" restaurant than a "food" restaurant, if that makes sense.

Nine Dragons, China - I ate here way back in 1997 when I was 13, so I don't remember much. I think we left kind of underwhelmed, but it's not sticking out for me.

My "must try" list includes:
- California Grill
- Le Cellier (anyone know if they use Alberta/Canadian beef??)
- San Angel Inn
- Tutto Italia
- Chefs de France
- Akershus

Agree with Jo about Akershus. One of the best meals we have had at WDW was the Princess Breakfast. Those hashbrowns are wonderful! We ate at Chefs last year and hubby loved it so much that now he wants that to be our "tradition". So we will be there again in the next couple o days.

We ate at Rose and Crown on Sunday and it was Yummy! I love Fish and Chips, so it was quite good. The Illuminations was a little touch and go.....lots of people down at the "private viewing area" smoking, so we took the little ones out of there!

As Promised- my Epcot dining list!

My DH loves nine dragons and we eat there every time. The bad part about the restaurant is that the tables are literally on top of each other, makes it hard to enjoy a meal when you can hear everything going on at the next table. Since the refurb, the only thing that changed is the room, the menu is still pretty much the same in my opinion.

If you are too nervous to try it again, go to Yak & Yeti, that is a great Chinese restaurant at AK. Another one of my favorites and a must do every trip. Plus they have a great bar selections :woohoo:

We have been to both Earl and WPE. We liked WPE better, but may give Earl another try next time.

I hope you are having a wonderful time! :cloud9: Can't wait to hear about it! :yay:

YAY we are still talking about food! :yay:

Here's our list. . .

Epcot:

Garden Grill -- we had lunch here one time. It was okay. The food was very bland, but the characters were great!

Coral Reef -- we had dinner here once. It was pretty good. The atmosphere was very cool.

LeCellier -- we have had dinner here 3 times. The first 2 times were super! Couldn't wait to go back. But the third time was NOT good. Very bad in-fact. I am still upset about that!

Electric Umbrella -- we had lunch here one time. It was your average Disney fast food. We sat upstairs by the window and watched all the people outside!

Boulangerie Patisserie -- we ate here twice. The first time wasn't very good. A few years later we decided to give it another try, and I'm glad we did. It was much better and we got a nice little table outside and had a great time!

Fife and Drum Tavern --we stopped here for a mid afternoon snack in November. Everything was very good!

Guess that's it for my Epcot dining experiences.

I really want to try San Angel Inn and Kaki Gori next trip! :wizard:

Another vote for Yak & Yeti. We did the TS and the CS and both were very good. Our server was a little far out :hippie: and she took forever, but the food was good.

I think I just realized that we are eating at all old places this year! :scared1: I need to take another look and make sure we try at least one new place!

I think I may add LTT for a lunch at MK one day. :confused3 Any thoughts?

Oh, and yeah - that was just me hijacking your PTR! :lmao:

I guess we're not very adventurous eaters 'cause we usually stick with the meat and potatoes type of Epcot restaurants. Here's our short list:

LeCellier: We've eaten there once and really enjoyed it. The steaks were delish and the chocolate mousse was so cute we didn't want to eat it (but we did ). I have an ADR to eat there this May.

Coral Reef: Eaten there twice and everything was good. Have an ADR to eat there a third time this May.

Rose & Crown: Ate there in August, 2008 and it was just blah. The food had no flavor to it at all! Won't be going back any time soon.

Garden Grill: Have eaten there three times. Each time, the food hasn't been outstanding but the character interaction has been great. During our 2009 trip, our kids had each character dance with them and had the entire restaurant laughing.

For counter service, we usually eat at either Electric Umbrella or Liberty Inn (is that the name of the one in the America pavilion?). My husband did get some orange chicken from China once and it was just okay.

For snacks at Epcot, we really like the churros and, every once in a while, we'll get a frozen margarita. Funnel cakes are always good and messy.

Thanks! :thumbsup2 I'd really like to go too, but need to keep an eye on a few things. My car lease is up in April, so I'll be getting a new set of wheels then. Oooh- I read that someone got a free dining pin for October the other day- maybe it might come your way.
Yay for a new car!:goodvibes

Ooh - your list looks yummy!!!

Okay- I must know what Shawarma is?:confused3 I really do like Sunshine Seasons- but I have heard of soem people not liking it. Yorkshire fish place is one I'd love to try- but nothing on the menu would suit DH so I'll just wait till I go without him. yeah right.

Tutto-- I've heard such mixed reviews and it is so dang high for OOP payment.

Biergarten- it sounds like so much fun-- and I really do like German food- but isn't it a buffet? We can't eat there if it is.

Teppan Edo--- yep- definitely thinking hard about that one b/c I've heard such great things about it lately.

Thanks for your reviews!

Agree with Jo about Akershus. One of the best meals we have had at WDW was the Princess Breakfast. Those hashbrowns are wonderful! We ate at Chefs last year and hubby loved it so much that now he wants that to be our "tradition". So we will be there again in the next couple o days.

Hope your trip is going well! i'm sure that if we ate at Chefs again- it would be good- I've heard positive reviews lately of it. I think I must have gone on an "off" night or something. Can't wait to hear how the latest experience was!

See- Nine Dragons- when we went, there was NO ONE in the whole restaurant- maybe three tables total? And they tried to seat us right on top of another table. So DH asked if we could move to a two top next to the wall and you would have thought we'd asked to have dinner on top of the Great Wall of China. They started fussing about it-- it just set the whole mood off to a bad start. Then the dish we ordered had shrimp and they were not cooked-- just barely steamed- and were still sort of wobbly. ewwwww. I get grossed out thinking about it. I left there really kind of ill.
Looking at the menu, I see a couple of things I might try if we ever went back. As of right now, though- IDK.

As far as Yak n Yeti... I'm doing AK next!;)

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Jo

We should try CHH sometime. I always forget about it. We do like to try new places each trip!

We have been to both Earl and WPE. We liked WPE better, but may give Earl another try next time.

I hope you are having a wonderful time! :cloud9: Can't wait to hear about it! :yay:

CHH- I think I like it so much b/c of the atmosphere. I like to sit upstairs in that little bridge looking walkway area that goes over top of that walkway underneath. There is no one there usually, although it has gained in popularity since we first found it and it does tend to get more busy as the day goes on. It's a nice resting stop with bathrooms out of the way upstairs.
Definitely going to try WPE next trip!:thumbsup2

YAY we are still talking about food! :yay:

I really want to try San Angel Inn and Kaki Gori next trip! :wizard:
Garden Grill- bland - yes that is the word for it. just not great at all but the character interaction was really good.

Coral Reef--- that year you ate there -- was the time you and I were supposed to meet there and we ended up going to Chef's instead. I should've pushed to keep the ADR at CR!:goodvibes

I'm still shocked at your dinner at Le Cellier- what a disaster. If it were me, I'd not want to go back for some time.

Thanks for your input and opinions!

Another vote for Yak & Yeti. We did the TS and the CS and both were very good. Our server was a little far out :hippie: and she took forever, but the food was good.

I think I just realized that we are eating at all old places this year! :scared1: I need to take another look and make sure we try at least one new place!

Oh, and yeah - that was just me hijacking your PTR! :lmao:
Do you think the YnY CS is as good as the TS?
LTT-- I really like that restaurant. It is very cozy and cute. I like the lunch and the dinner equally. Lunch, you can order what you want b/c it isn't a fixed menu like dinner. I've had their salads, and their hamburgers as well. Both were really good. At lunch you can also order their turkey and stuffing- it's kind of like what they serve at night.
You have to try at least one new place!:)

Thnaks for your ideas!

Meat and 'Taters-- i like it!:thumbsup2
Liberty Inn- I think that is what it's called. Never eaten there but I do keep it in mind when I'm in that area if I ever need French fries for the kiddos.
The Garden Grill- I don't know what it is about that restaurant, but the characters seema tad bit more laid back, or not in such a rush and really take their time with the patrons. It's a good place for that if it's important.

The orange chix your DH got- was that from the CS place? We';ve not tried that ever, but have been tempted before.

Thanks for sharing!

Yes, the orange chicken was from the counter service restaurant in China. Can't remember the name of the place.

I'm really enjoying hearing everyone's ideas and opinions on different restaurants.

I think what I have to keep in mind is that, like a hotel, you have to just find what works for you. No two experiences will ever be the same, even if you like a restaurant, they sometimes have their bad days.

So- I'm on a mission to try lots of different places.
However- Animal Kingdom stumps me. It really does.
We don't spend a ton of time in this park. We like it, it's fun, I just think I'm not spending enough time there to appreciate it.

With that said- my list of restaurants we've eaten at--
(there aren't many!)

Animal Kingdom~

Counter Service:

Flame Tree Barbeque: We really thought this was pretty good! What we didn't like about it were all the birds and ducks that came running as soon as we sat down. There's just something terribly wrong with a duck wanting to suck down a piece of Chicken.:confused3
We've only eaten here once- I got the smoked chicken, DH got the Pork sandwich and a salad, and the kids got the drumsticks. The area where the tables are is beautiful. On a later trip, during the Year of a Million Dreams, DH and I were "Dreamed" a certificate--- we helped open Flame Tree one morning. Lots of yelling and beating and hollering in order to do it. It was fun. I would definitely eat here again.

Espresso, Coffee & Pastry--Entrance Plaza: coffee fix, of course. We always order the biggest cup we can and sip it on the way to Everest. Pretty good.

Table Service:

Yak and Yeti - We ate here and I thought it was pretty good. Dh really didn't care for what he got. He had the Stir-Fried Beef and Broccoli, I had the Sweet and Sour Chicken. I tasted his beef and the brown sauce it was in was really bland- tasted like it needed "Something" but not sure what? We also ordered the Chicken Lo mein and the kids shared Crispy Honey Chicken. We also got the Pot stickers and I liked them as well. All in all, a good meal, except for DH's. We will return I'm sure at some point.

Rainforest Cafe- We've eaten at this one in AK as well as the one in Disneyland. We are not fans, unfortunately. The first time we ate at one was at AK. I ordered the chop salad and DH and I shared the crab cakes. It was not nasty- it was just a so so meal that I felt was not worth what it cost. So we tried again when we were in DL and it confirmed my thoughts.
We will not be back.

ANd so- that's the only places we've eaten at. I'd love to hear if you have eaten at a reastaurant other than those that was over the top wonderful in this park.
Thanks for reading!

hope you're having a wonderful day!

Up next~
