Day 6 – Part 1
Before we left for WDW, I had read several negative reviews on Animal Kingdom, which shocked me. Sure, it can be compared to a zoo, but can you tell me what zoo you’ve been to that includes the magic of Disney characters, performances and even a parade! I don’t thinks so.
In my opinion, Animal Kingdom can be described as a pleasantly well themed, exciting and educational park that includes areas like Africa, Asia, Discovery Island – all brought to life with a little bit of Disney magic. The Tree of Life is the centre of the park, detailing hundreds of animals carved into its trunk.
Surprisingly, we managed to arrive at Animal Kingdom shortly after 9:00. I was eager to share this experience with my nature loving family.
We made our way through the entrance of the park, the area called the Oasis. Here, you will find colourful birds; lush vegetation and CM’s carrying live animals. The girls stopped to talk to a CM who had a gigantic spider in a small aquarium. We do adore most creatures but spiders are definitely not one of them. It’s a fear both DH and I share.
Off Topic
In our early-married years, when a spider found its way into our house, it was a debate between the two of us, who would be the one to kill it. I remember one evening, as we were getting ready for bed, I turned on the bedside lamp, discovering a very large – what we call – a water spider, sitting on DH’s nightstand. It was so big; my first thought was that DH was playing a joke on me with a fake spider until it started to crawl!!!!
DH and I both screamed and argued about who should kill it. I’m not sure what Prince Grumpy was thinking because he grabbed a rolled up sock and threw it at the spider, knocking it to the floor. At this point we both jumped up on the bed trying to figure out what we could use to kill it without having to get too close.
Finally, after realizing DH was useless, I got off the bed, grabbed a book from my shelf and dropped it on top of the spider. DH came over and stepped on the book to make sure it was really dead. We grabbed our pillows and blanket and slept on the couch for the next two nights so that we could fumigate the bedroom with Spider-ban. Spider banning is a ritual at our place. We spider-ban everything, inside, outside, the deck, the boats and even the kayaks.
When the girls were born, we tried very hard not to show our fear to them, hoping by doing so, we’d have someone else to either remove the spiders from the house or kill them. Unfortunately, our plan was not successful. They too developed the same fear.
You might find that strange because we don’t mind any other type of bugs, beetles, mice or even snakes. Another odd thing about our fear is that we still have a fascination for examining and taking pictures of them.
End of Off Topic
Anyhow, back to the CM. She gave us a big speech about how wonderful spiders are…blah..blah…blah.. and I said, “Well, if it was in my house, I’d kill it.” Her smile turned into a frown and she actually turned her back on me and walked away.
We headed toward Camp Minnie-Mickey. The girls got a few autographs before we went to watch Festival of the Lion King.
In case you're wondering what Goofy's T-shirt says, it reads "Careful, I had a bowl of cranky this morning"
So many of the characters got a kick out of it, pointing and laughing
The Lion King show was a delightful performance featuring African music, dancing, gymnastics and the Lion King himself. It was also a nice break from the heat.
Next we went to see Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends. We found this to be a fun lesson in nature and we were surprised when live animals were used as part of the show.
After that we stopped at Pizzafari for some lunch. Here we met a friendly CM who took a group picture and asked the girls some trivia questions. He was a really nice elderly man but I began to wonder if he would ever leave so we could finish our lunch.
