I still can't stop laughing about the Churchill crack. Now everything makes sense, finally. The people who support Bush do so because he is the best President America has had since Winston Churchill.

I'm going to piddle in my pants. I swear.

This is the best political thread EVER. I think I need to save it to my favorites, so I can look at it again and again.

I actually started a favorites file a few weeks ago where I keep the best of the best quotes. When I need a laugh, I just browse though them...there are some doozies there, but this one has got to top the list. Hell, I might even put it in my siggy!

Actually, I wasn't referring to any movie at all. It's well know what Reagan's thoughts on aids were.

And to be fair, he did change his attitude later on, at least publicly. I don't know what his private thoughts were. I'd like to think he saw the light. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't.

Gee, could no one have heard about it since it wasn't recognized in the science community in June of 1981? No, he should have known about it before hand. He should have taken 100% of the GNP to fight it, lets get rid of everything - but wait, it hadn't even been recognized by scientists yet.

In 1987 it still wasn't the hot button that it is now, except for those who were affected by it. There were warnings of what it would become, but even those in the scientific community were not that upset by it. And, your numbers sound impressive, except at 25,000 people having died from it still didnt' come close to the milliions upon millions who were dieing from other diseases at the time.

Is it a terrible disease? Most definately, but to blame Ronald Reagon as if he was the one who sponsered the disease into the world is really out there.

Got nothing to do with blasphemy, it has to do with a really strange perception, that he should have been all knowing about something that even scientists knew nothing about.

And, wow, he made some comments when he didn't really know enough about it - gee, that's never happened to anyone else in the world.

But, he was supposed to be perfect, and he wasn't - he must have caused aids then. Yea, right.

Community to me does not mean everyone having to agree and think the same things. While they do have similar roots, that's more Communist to me. Our "National community" is based on people being allowed to express thier conflicting ideals and ideas. Debates between intelligent and informed people lead to new perspectives and creative comprimises. Debates such as these can also help educate people who may not know any better.

Debate does not mean hatred, nor does it mean dissent. I think the number one issue with our current president is the way he gets rid of anyone who would play "devil's advocate" to him and challenge his thoughts and ideals.

Conformity leads to stagnation, and that leads to social atrophy.

Ummm...thanks for making my point. No one even knew what it was in 81, yet by 87 thousands had died from the disease before he ever even made a public statement.

You'd think a disease that came on with such a furor in such a short time might have warranted a mentioning by the President, wouldn't you?

No one is saying he should have known in 81...but 83, 84, 85, 86...yeah, he damn sure should have been taking some steps.

But, as long as it was only striking gays and iv users..who cared? Certainly not RR.

You're a strong believer in President Bush, and you do not tolerate dissent.

This would work in Stepford. Just because I disagree with some, doesn't mean I don't consider them part of my community. We disagree - disagreement is not hatred or division. It's just a disagreement.

I must admit, sometimes your logic absolutely baffles me. This started because you quoted a mistruth. It was refuted. End of story. What other possible point are you trying to make? This has nothing to do with perfection. It has to do with a statement you claimed RR never made. He did. Period. Nobody ever claimed the exact time frame he actually made it in coincided with specific scientific discoveries about the disease.

In 1987 I was 20 years old and had already attended 2 funerals of family friends and knew another 3 or 4 who were dying. Of course they did not matter to RR. They were Gay, so they deserved it. It was not until hemophiliac boys and straight people started getting it from our tainted blood supply that Saint Reagan and his cronies took notice.

Oh I have seen the error of my ways. How could I have not been able to see the light earlier? So, even though AIDS wasn't a buzz word for anyone except those who were AIDS activists, even though it wasn't a buzzword in the scientific community, or any community at large (except for gays and drug addicts) at the time, he should have known better and dropped everything for it.

Perhaps you might have forgotten, but AIDS didn't even begin to get the attention it gets now until the 1990's, 3 to 4 years after Reagon was in office. But hey, if it smears the man, why bother with any facts?
