Bus virgin - a few questions.

This is always what I want to do. But DH is always convinced that "this time" we can beat the line. So we always end up running out of the park right after the evening show only to stand in line for 40 minutes with me giving him the "I told you so" look.

Or you could do what we did last time -- when you walk out and SEE the huge line, turn around and walk back in to the Magic Kingdom (we could see the monorail lines before we went out through the turnstiles). Then he'll see the magic of waiting inside!

LOL! Sounds like my DH.

Definitely recommend waiting in the park for a while, as other posters have mentioned.

Also, I've had severe leg injuries and cannot stand while in moving vehicles without risking further injury. If it's standing room only when I reach the front of the queue, I let other guests go ahead and wait for the next bus. It's usually only a few more minutes at that point. *LOL*

Yep, watching the castle change colors while contemplating the "World" at the end of the day is the most satisfying part of my trips!!!

The bus was my three yo favorite ride.

If you drive, unless you got an unbelievable parking spot, you still have to wait for the tram or walk a few miles.

My husband always drags me out in the middle of the fireworks to avoid the lines; however, the times that we waited until the end - the wait wasn't that long.

My advice for anyone contemplating using the WDW bus system -- rent a car!

DH was always determined that on vacation he didn't want to drive. So, for a few years we relied on the WDW bus system. We found that it took nearly an hour to get anywhere -- unless you wanted to go resort to resort, in which case it was more like an hour and a half. We always rent a car anyway, but parked and never moved it. A couple of times, we were running late, so decided to take the car. We found we could get anywhere on site within 10 minutes, sometimes less. That was it. No more buses for us. Ever. The roads are wide and well paved, the signage is good. Even going to MK, parking, getting on the tram and taking the monorail from the parking lot takes no more time than waiting for a bus, making several stops and finally wending our way to MK, all the while standing with kids, strollers, etc.

So what do you plan to do? Spend the night in the park?

I wish that was an option!!! ;)

What I mean, is that if the park is open for another few hours after the fireworks or parade, you would be better off waiting for the crowd to pass while you continue to enjoy the park - rather than standing in the line for the bus. That's what we do.

We always use the bus transportation and seems like no matter what resort we are in the wait for a bus at Epcot is always the longest....Stood in line there one time over and hour one night waiting on a bus....my daughter was there 2 hours that same night waiting on a bus....I believe that we were going to POP that night..... If you do stay for fireworks - just take your time getting out of the park..brouse through the shops and enjoy the sights - much better than standing in a bus line.

wait IN THE park for 40 minutes, then walk out to the bus stop. The 40 minute line will be gone by then and you will have enjoyed a few more magical minutes of shopping and snacking in the parks while everyone else breathed bus fumes for those 40 minutes. I do this in the Magic Kingdom all the time after Wishes (because even us rental car folks are trapped in the MK until we can get on the monorail or boat!). We hang around for 40-60 minutes watching the castle change colors and eating ice cream, then slowly moseying out to the monorail when the lines have died down. It is a MUCH more relaxing way to end your evening!
I had a very stressful trip with my in-laws a few years ago. My MIL and I agreed on next-to nothing. But after Wishes one night, we both agreed it would be a lot smarter to hang around in the park rather than join the throngs of people fighting their way down Main Street.

So we hung around the Hub for about 10 minutes. The crowds never let up, it was still wall-to-wall people streaming past us. At that point, she then says it's time for us to go! Sheesh!!! All she did was let about 20,000 people get in line ahead of us! Of course, we had a huge wait for a bus, thanks to her bright idea.

The bus system works really well for us, with one exceptions. We like to eat meals at resorts more than at parks, and going from one resort to another can take a loooong time. We now take a cab if we're going resort to resort, even for parties of 8, this isn't a problem as there are van-cabs, not just cars and we've never had problems hailing them. Fares are usually $4-7 - I think the highest was $12. Even if we did that twice a day, it's still way less than renting a car. Has saved us time and money.

We eat at a lot of resort restaurants also, but try and time it where transportation is not a big issue.

For example, the afternoon we're at Epcot or the Studios, we'll have lunch at one of the Epcot resorts, so it's a short walk to the resort, then walk back to the Studios and get a bus to our resort.

We'll eat at the Magic Kingdom monorail resorts when we're at Magic Kingdom for the day, then it's a short ride to the Magic Kingdom to get a bus back to our resort.

We also spend lots of our evenings at Downtown Disney anyway (Adventurer's Club), so after leaving a park, we'll take a bus to any Disney resort we wish to eat dinner, then bus over to Pleasure Island after dinner, then shut down AC, then back to the room.

We just got back today from por, and really we never waited more than 5 minutes or so for a bus. Some nights the buses were pretty full and we stood, but really the rides are not that long. And there are several stops at por, so you can choose the stop closest to your room. And if you go to downtown disney the ferry comes every 10 minutes after 4pm, and it is a very nice ride. Have a good time.

That's what we kindof do :-) Not really :-) However, we do stay IN the park as long as possible. When watching Illuminations, we're usually near the American Adventure and SLOWLY work our way toward Future World, stop for pictures, stop for a beverage and snack, sit and watch the fountain dance for awhile, wander through Mousegear for a bit, and then finally at least an hour after Illuminations, we wander toward the bus stop and the lines are usually empty by then and a bus usually comes pretty quickly.

Same thing for Wishes, as soon as Wishes is over, we wander in the wrong direction, just slowly winding through the park until security starts nudging us toward the front, then sit and watch the castle change colors for awhile, meander down Main Street, stop for a soft drink at Casey's or an ice cream, wander through the Emporium, then slowly wander out of the park to an empty bus queue

For Fantasmic! we hang out in our seats for quite awhile just chilling till most of the crush is gone, then slowly wander our way out, take MANY pictures of the Tower of Terror and the RnRC courtyard, wander down Sunset boulevard, and toward Great Movie Ride and take pictures of the Hat and Grauman's Theater, then slowly out of the park, probably grabbing a drink and/or snack on the way out.

Using that strategy, we rarely have to wait in the smelly bus line standing up. I'd much rather sit on a bench looking at the Castle at MK, the dancing Fountain at Epcot, or Sorcery Mickey's Hat at the Studios contemplating the universe than standing in a bus line with grumpy people.

What a great idea. I will be using the bus system for my next trip and I wondered about the ride home after the night parades. I will hang around until the crush of people rushes to the bus. By then it might not be so bad.

Great tip!:thumbsup2

i've been reading a lot of mixed reviews on the busses at POR we are going down in a little over a week and i'm pretty sure we'll be using our van the whole time, having 3 kids and a doulbe stroller, i'd rather have my own car there leave them in the stroller all they way to the car if it's in resonable walking distance and we can avoid the trams which in the evenings it's often better to do!!!

We stayed at POR on our last trip and never had any problems. I don't recall waiting more than 10 minutes for a bus to the parks. And the most we waited for a bus back was probably 20 minutes or so. That happened a couple of times, but it was after Illuminations at Epcot and MNSHHP at MK, so it was understandable. As many have stated, Disney is good at keeping the buses moving and usually provides several for large crowds at any one stop.
