Bullying charges dropped

Here's part of the article text:

Cases Dropped Against Girls Accused in Florida Bullying Death

Prosecutors have decided not to file criminal charges against two Lakeland girls accused of bullying a former classmate who committed suicide.

Brian Haas, a spokesman with the State Attorney's Office, said he could not release any information about the girls' cases, citing Florida laws that make records confidential in juvenile criminal cases.

But lawyers for 14-year-old Guadalupe Shaw and 12-year-old Katelyn Roman confirmed that the State Attorney's Office filed “no bills” in their cases.

This means prosecutors will not officially file criminal charges against the girls.

This just angers me. They even showed on the news the flippant
attitude of this children at this girls death.

You mean to tell me they don't have all of the horrible messages that
were sent?

No justice

They are kids.. Little kids. They don't need jail time. They need counseling, good psychological counseling. They need more than not being allowed on the internet or whatever. They need to understand how their actions pushed this girl to be so sad that she felt she had no other option. I wouldn't say they are killers but they need to understand the situation beyond what a 12 or 14 yearold can understand. They need psychiatric help and a lot of it.

I saw one set of parents and one of the girls interviewed yesterday on the Today show. They are going to sue. Sure, why not. Poor thing. Bullied someone, but SHE's the victim. I don't wonder where she learned her behavior. Her parents were NOT AT ALL apologetic or sorry for the reprehensible behavior of their daughter.

Thank you for typing it for me.

The worst part is that the girl says she did nothing wrong. She still doesn't get it.

Thing is, the information we (we being the news-watching public) have seen has pretty much been provided by the prosecution, and they wanted to jump on the bullying bandwagon -- which is already a hot-button topic these days. We have no real idea how much of that is true, what the other girl did back to them, even whether the "sound bites" were taken in context or not. Prosecutors always want the case to be tried in the court of public opinion.

If they had enough evidence to prosecute, the charges wouldn't have been dropped.

Never forget that the news media is far from biased, and their strongest motive is to provide controversy and build ratings -- the truth comes somewhere down the line in their priorities. I assume none of us actually knows the case first-hand, so we have to be careful to listen with a critical ear to whatever the media says.

I agree with you, while I hate bullys I dont consider the media a reliable source for about anything

Those girls will have to answer 1 day for what they have done the same as the rest of us.

I do not like that the charges was dropped by any means.

Ugh. There is no accountability. The girls and their families still think they didn't do anything wrong. They will continue down the same path. I don't think they learned a thing from this.

The "boss" bully admitted on Facebook she was the reason that poor girl killed herself and that she didn't care. And like stated before her parents want to paint HER as the victim so her dad claims her account was "hacked". Gonna be a said day when karma comes for them........

Roman, and her family, are playing the victim card and it is just disgusting. It's easy to see where this girl gets her attitude and lack of empathy or compassion from - her parents.

She still doesn't understand what she did was wrong. Because the girls were arrested, they will be getting psychological counseling. These girls are not innocent, but are being given a second chance to turn their lives around. I hope it works.

Good luck with trying to sue, I don't think that will go very far. These girls are far from innocent, and if there is a lawsuit, their disgusting behavior will be out there for all to see.

As a society, we are doing a lot to address bullying, but we need to put just as much effort into suicide prevention. Kids need help, and they need to know that suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem.

Talk about white trash, shesh. Probably the first time in her life the little piece of crap wore a dress in her life.

Their time will come. When they try to get their first job as a teen and nobody will hire them because they know who they are. When they apply for college and are rejected because the school put their names in google. Same for trying to break into any career. What they are saying and their lack of remorse is online for all the world to see and it will be there for a Long part of their life. They'll get their own brand of bullying.

As much as people shouldn't bully anyone I feel freedom of speech is exponentially more important then the freedom to not be bullied by speech. Assault, battery, defamation, stalking (the legal definition) are different of course from merely not-nice speech. Not-nice and even mean speech needs to be protected as much if not more then uncontroversial speech. That is why as much as I hate Westboro I would hate any law that limits their speech more.

As wrong as it is anyone should be legally able to tell someone they should kill themselves. Morally of course is another case but no one should be held legally liable, in my opinion, if someone decides to take them up on their suggestion. Suicide is always the choice of the person who does it, not the choice of someone who suggests it.
