Building your own light saber?

Someone told me that somewhere in Disney your child can build their own light saber. Does anyone know where this is? Thanks! I have a Star Wars obsessed son who would love to do this.

There's a shop in DHS next to Star Tours (naturally) where you can make one - also in DTD you can make one at Once Upon a Toy.

I know they have it at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney.

They may also have it at Tatooine Traders in DHS. Someone else might have to confirm that for me.

And considering Disney prices, not a bad value for what you get. Kids love them.

Just be aware that there is typically a line to do this, at least at DHS. It's not like you just walk up and grab stuff, an employee takes you through one at a time and you pick out each part of the saber.

I found no lines to speak of in the DHS store about 1 or 1.5 hours before close the day I was there. Just had to wait behind one rather nerdy teen.

My son did this a week ago in DTD. He enjoyed it but my only complaint was they didn't have any of the extra decorative pieces it showed on the signs. When we asked about them we were told "the Ewoks are currently working on them but they didn't know when or if they would get them again."

My kids love doing this at DHS. We always think it seems like a decent value for a souvie at WDW.

My son owns 2 lightsabers and I talked him out of a 3rd this year.

As previous posters have mentioned, there are 3 locations that I'm aware of:

Mickey's Star Traders in Tomorrowland in MK.
Tatooine Traders (the exit shop from Star Tours) in DHS.
Once Upon a Toy in DTD.

There used to be a dedicated cast member at each of these locations to help the child build their lightsaber. I did not observe a cast member at any of these locations last month, but then again, there weren't huge crowds, except at Tatooine Traders.

Mickey's Star Traders didn't have a great selection of all of the parts and options.

In the past, I've seen the CM query the parent as to whether they were going to buy the completed product before allowing the child to build the lightsaber to discourage having to clean up abandoned product.

Now I'm curious. A few people said it's a good souvenir for the price, how much does it cost? Does anyone have pics? We have some of the cheap light sabers from walmart or wherever, just wondering how different these are. Sounds like an experience DH and DD would enjoy! TIA!

If I recall, they are $25-26.

They are very, very good quality. It is basically an LED flashlight handle with decorative pieces screwed on the ends and a collapsing colored tube for the blade which lights up from the LEDs.

The handle also has sound chips in it so it makes cool lightsaber sounds when you swoosh it or hit it against another surface.

If a child owns more than one they could disassemble them and build new combinations at home.

We own a single bladed model and a double-bladed model. The double-bladed model is a bit more awkward to carry, transport, and use. The telescoping blade is basically kept collapsed by gravity, so with the double-bladed one, one end or another is constantly coming out and getting in the way

We have a bunch of the cheapy discount store light sabers and one from Tatooine Traders. The one that we built is much, much higher quality and bigger than the others. The sound effects are better and there are more color choices. I think that it was $24.99 when we bought ours, but I could be wrong (and that was 3+ years ago).

We were actually pretty disappointed by it last year. They only had one color and one style of handle (at either location). And the cast member put the whole thing together and didn't let my kiddo (who was 6) help at all. He had saved up all summer to do it, and then it ended up being a huge letdown.

Do they really play with them? I mean really REALLY play with them? If they do and they like really being able to whack at the sabers, I wouldn't get the build your own. They might make cool noises, but they can break, and they are heavier, bigger etc.

DS has several basic sabers; bought from Target but you can get the same ones at Disney. Those are his play sabers. He has one or two build your own, and those are for showing technique but not for hitting things.

The first time he got one, I was against it because I saw how big they were (and he was young). Heavy, big, they don't collapse all the way into the handle like the cheapies do, and no belt loop thing. Not one day later he left it on a bench and it was gone 5 minutes later when we all realized it was gone. It was too heavy for him, and he kept handing it off to us, so we were all to blame (no one could remember who he had handed it off to or IF he had done so). And the person that took it and never turned it into lost and found was ALSO to blame.

So really check it out, see how it collapses, see if you can hold one (with batteries in it!) and let the child hold it, really figure out if that is something you want to deal with for the rest of the day/trip...and if you think it'll be broken quickly depending on how the child (or husband, LOL) generally plays with lightsabers.

I agree with this. Great item, great value and extremely well built. Much better than any from Target IMO.

Our kids did the "Jedi Training" at DHS and loved it. Photopass was worth it just for the shots from it alone.

I believe the gift shop that sells the make your own is called "Tatooine Traders" at DHS.

However, we did ours during a little downtime at Downtown Disney. No reason to waste valuable park time building one - which is half the fun.

Thank you everyone who chimed in! I think we will go for it. DD is 4 and does like to "fight" with the light sabers, but is pretty gentle with her toys overall so I don't worry about durability too much. We are going to DTD one night so I think we might make some time to do it! Now the question is who will enjoy it more...DD or DH Thanks again!
