We are going to stay in the cabins in May. My mother does not like camping and is worried that it will be too rustic and there will be bugs. Can anyone tell me if there are bugs there? Are the cabins comfortable? I don't think I am ever going to try to plan a trip for 3 families again!!!!

The cabins are not really cabins, but more like mobile homes. They are really anything but rustic. As far as bugs, keep in mind that FW is a reclaimed cypress swamp. The amount and type of bugs you encounter depends on the time of year. That being said, WDW does a better than decent job of mosquito control, spraying early every morning. I would bring a good bug repellant and use it no matter what time of year you go. As far as planning a trip for 3 families, I salute you. :earseek:

We will be there the beginning of May. Anyone know if there is a bug problem at this time?

I don't think you will have a problem with bugs. We have stayed in FW Homes and cabins for 14 yrs now and never had a problem with bugs biting us. The cabins are so much nicer than a hotel room. You will have plenty of room and privacy that a hotel room does not have. I am not a camping person either, so tell your mom not to worry she won't feel like she is camping. Have a great trip. We were there in January and we will be going back in May but we are staying at the Wilderness lodge Villas for the first time. :flower:

My mom is a camper and stays in her motorhome when she goes to Ft. W and no matter what time of year it is, always seems to get bug bites more than the rest of us. I'm am not sure if they are mosquito bites or what as they do itch, but are filled with clear liquid that oozes (sorry, could not figure out a better way to describe it) when she scratches. She usually puts cortizone 10 on them, but it helps very little. While there last week, she was once again "eat up" so when I went to their local Target, I picked up a tube of Beaudreaux's Butt Paste, which is sold in the baby section for diaper rash. She laughed at me but applied the paste to her bites and overnight they dried up and went away (who's laughing now!) I believe that paste is a cure for anything and we now have both campers stocked with it. :rotfl:
As far as the cabins go, everyone will love them, all 3 families and you will have a great time! You do not feel as if you are "camping" at all and yes, they are comfortable. Enjoy your trip!

We heard about the "fly" problem last year before our May trip but really didn't have a problem. I saw maybe 5 flies the whole time we were there (1 week) and we stayed at the campground (no theme parks that trip!). I would suggest using the bug repellants and request a cabin AWAY from the canals (if there is such a monster, I am not familiar with the cabins).
We had a great time and are going again this May!

mrsgus06: thanks for the butt paste tip. :cheer2: my oldest ds has allergic reactions to bug bites so i'll have to give it a try. It sounds better than a baking soda paste.

We were at the Wilderness Lodge 2003 in May and the "flys"...are they sand fly's or something. I forget what they called them...were awful. So that is not limited to the campground. You are likely to find them anywhere..parks or resorts. They were particulary bad that year(or at least that's what we were told)..we were there in May 2 years before that, and not experienced any problems, so I guess they were right. I don't think the problem with that particular bug is related only to the campground.

Last season's fly--deer or yellow--was especially bad! There really isn't much that Disney can do about these pests. I'd take a pair of long pants just in case they are as bad this year. You'll see them--small yellow flies with stripes. They are very aggressive and some people are really bothered by their bites. You'll mostly see them at dusk but if you are moving they aren't so bad.
