So, I've determined that I can make my DVC purchase if I can get cheap airfare to Florida.

For our proposed end-of-August trip, airfare only is showing at CAD$1600 to $2,000.

I've heard that we can pay substantially less by flying out of Buffalo. So where can I snag the deals? Any websites I should be checking?

Thanks!

air tran and southwest both fly out of buffalo and are cheap. If you are close to the states border I would go for it. They both have direct flights.

great flight search site www.kayak.com

I'd also look at southwest and sign up for ding - I've had a few come out now for BUF to MCO for August for cheap - we got $170 PP return on Air tran BUF to MCO and for the may long weekend we got $150 PP return rochester to Tampa - for us it doesn't matter which airport we fly into as we rent a car anyway - my dh likes to have his own wheels (aka he's a control freak!!):lmao:

We love our DVC and will be adding on more points as soon as I have the $$ to do it!!

I just got $160 return SWA. price finally dropped on the direct flight I was looking for on the dates I wanted. $60 one way and $89 the other.

I have gotten as low as $54 for each leg of the trip but not this time.

I've booked 4 seats for Buffalo to Orlando in Sept. on SWA. Best deal ever! Flight out and back 64.19 plus taxes for a total of 155 u.s and with the exchange 171.46 round trip. I subscribe to "Ding" as well so awsome deals to Vegas and other areas. Best I saw was Buffalo to Columbus for 15.00! one way.
We plan to stay overnight prior to our flight and leave the car parked at the hotel total for all 4 105.00 plus a free breakfast and suttle to and from hotel.
WDW hear we come and it will never be the same!:rotfl:  :scared1:

Thanks all.

Forgot to mention that we live in Toronto, so Buffalo is certainly in reach. Went to the SouthWest Airlines site and the total cost for a Thursday to Thursday flight was US$700. DVC is making sense now that the airfare can be brought down to reasonable prices...

During Southwest's sale in May (for travel in July) the fare was $34 each way plus tax. So we're flying the reverse route.....Orlando to Buffalo....in July and are planning a nice weekend visit to Toronto.

$34? That's nuts.

Cheapest Toronto departure fare I've seen is about $200. But then the tax is $215! Total $400ish for each person. :sad2:

The taxes on international airfares are ridiculous. And when the international journey is Canada then it's even worse. That's why so many people from Toronto and SE Ontario drive over to Buffalo to fly out and those from SW Ontario head over to Detroit. It knocks out all the international taxes and it brings the low-fare airline options like Southwest, AirTran and Spirit.

>$34......that's nuts!
I agree. ($44 with tax)
But that's what it was and we're taking advantage of it.

We LOVE flying out of BUF (and have also had good experiences flying out of ROC). The difference in price is astounding - and I admit when I first booked with SWA I was nervous - it seemed like a deal too good to be true. OUr first flights were our cheapest - $235 total for 3 of us round trip BUF - MCO. We have not been able to match that, but we are now DVC members and we will always fly out of the USA. We flew WestJet last year just because I had enough airmiles, but really the taxes you have to pay with airmiles are are the same as a flight with SWA (approx $150 pp taxes with airmiles) and that coupled with the pain in the butt of customs at the airport vs customs driving across the border really cemented my decision. We have also tried driving to BUF the night before and using the hotels' long-term parking offer as well as taking a mid-day flight and parking at the airport. For us it really is a toss up as I generally sleep poorly the night before (in the hotel) so the next day is a bit of a slog. But, driving across the border mid-day is also a longer wait than either late at night or early in the morning. But, no matter when we go, the feeling that we are saving at least $1000 by driving 2 hours cannot be beat. Definately download DING, keep an eye on the transportation board and familiarize yourself with the airlines that fly out of BUF (SWA is our choice, but we have also flown AirTrans with no issue) and check their websites often - you can generally snag a good deal. There is also the opportunity to obtain a refund or travel credit if you purchase a flight and the price is reduced, so it is really even more insurance should you choose to go this route (but be aware that if you do get a travel credit, you will be obliged to talk your family into another trip to WDW before the credit expires!! LOL ;) )
