BT Anytime changes the goalposts!

I've just had an update e-mail from BT Anytime, and thought I'd post this here for any of you who also subscribe to the scheme, but may have missed this little gem :

A number of our customers are logged onto the internet for over 12 hours per day. This affects the quality of service for the majority of our customers. To make things fairer for everybody, we've changed the daily internet use limit for Anytime and SurfTime customers from 16 hours to 12 hours of 'unmetered' access in any 24-hour period.

Now, whilst I doubt that this will affect my DIS board time , I don't call that an 'Anytime' service . To me, 12 hours out of 24 sounds more like BT Halftime!

That is exactly what I said on the phone to BT yesterday. I was not happy at all. I chose Anytime because I use the PC for most of the day and not have to worry about the connection time. This is not the type of service I expected.

I'm looking into getting broadband but not with BT. I can use that 24 hours a day for less than the new Anytime charge and extra line rental combined. I just have to buy a new modem, which is a bit galling as we have just had a new phone line put in.

....... having got the PC up and running, I had to spend a while on the 50p per minute line to BT to install the Anytime software.... it took ages!! That done, all the mails that had been waiting in the system since May 7th started coming in!!! OMG!
I had TWO mails from BT about this new system and one said I'd be best to switch to Broadband because I am a "Heavy User" ......... well excuse me, ROFLOL!! I looked into the cost..... wow! No wonder they are offering £90 credit for us "habitual users"!
I wonder if it is worth switching to AOL? Any thoughts?

Shirley, I wouldn't touch AOL with a barge post - it's not your typical ISP and if you are used to a normal ISP it will drive you barmy -

I am currently using tiscali - I have a great deal 50 hours per month for £5.00 which works for me, as I usually log on from work anyway, but they also offer any anytime deal for £14.99.

I am thinking of moving to broadband once we move house though, as people are forever complaining that they can;t get through on the phone.

We have broadband with Pipex and it is magic. Does not cost a lot more than anytime type services but gives 500k bits/second and you can still use your phone line for phone or fax at the same time as the internet. I think it is £19.95 + VAT/month.

More than happy with Freeserve thanks!

Flat monthly fee - 1st month free - about £14.99 I think.

Unlimited access - but

1. 2 hour drop out and re-connect

2. Connection is fixed to a single BT line number.

I've had the same e-mail,I think its a massive con and am really annoyed about it.

I haven't had time to e-mail them to tell them what I think of their 24/7 alleged access,but I will asap

Ok folks - just for the record!

The product is from BT Openworld - not BT as a corporate body.

It is a 'shared' access, therefore a customer who remains online for extended periods may be preventing other customers accessing the service.

It is not designed to be an 'always on' service like broadband and the small print clearly states that unattended use is a breach of the agreement.

So what's in a name? - I'm on Freeserve - but it still costs me a monthly fee!

...And Blueyonder's Surf Unlimited has just become Surf LIMITED, as I was getting cut off every 2 hours last night. Inquired with their technical support to find out that this is their "new policy" that they omitted to tell their customers...after putting our fee up last month. What a cheek! I WAS going to go Broadband...but not with Blueyonder now!

Bonzo - I wasn't griping about the 'misleading' name so much as the fact that the goalposts were moved <i>after</i> we'd signed up to the anytime service.

As I said, it won't make a jot of difference to my surfing (I don't have time to stay on-line for 12 hours, let alone 24!), but I was annoyed with the principle of changing the spec after the event.

I still think the service I get from BT Openworld is generally pretty good, but there's always room for improvement

The term "Anytime" just refers to when you are allowed access i.e. you are allowed to connect anytime 24 x 7 as opposed to evenings and weekends only.

I still remember Freeserve 24 x 7 unmetered access.
