Bruges

We are going to Bruges in two weeks time. Our good friends got us the weekend as a Christmas present and we are going with them on the ferry.

Has anyone else been and have any recommendations on what to see and where to eat. There will be seven of us including three children.

Bruges is a lovely place. The kids will love a boat trip on the canals. There are lots of medieval courtyards and such. I'm sure you can also find lots to do with Belgian Chocolate. For the culture vultures there is Michaelangelo's Pieta in one of the churches.

In Belgium you get great food everywhere but as there are a lot of tourists that go there there are also a lot of touristy places. They will also be good but it might be nicer to go off the beaten track and find a bit more authentic place.

If you get the chance take a trip to Ostend about half an hour from Bruge, there is a famous Chicken shop there it has never closed in 34 years it hasn't even got a lock on the door. They serve the best chicken i have ever tasted nothing else just half a chicken and brown bread, but you will be hooked we went in twice while we were there last february.

I agree that Bruges is a lovely place. I've been in summer and winter and it seemed very different in the winter. I did the canal trip on my summer visit and it was lovely - probably best to plan on needing lots of warm clothes in February though . It has a big market square, cobbled streets, fascinating architecture and lots of lovely chocolate shops and a chocolate museum .

A great place to wander around, shop, enjoy the cafes etc. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
