Broken foot, Rain forecast, Workers strike...

The count down is on and we leave for Peru in 6 days for our first ABD trip. We have checked our lists and mentally packed and repacked over and over. We are beyond excited for our upcoming trip and nothing is going to dampen our spirits but there are some grey clouds on the horizon and it isn't just the weather forecast. 4 weeks ago I fractured my 5th metacarpal in my right foot and had surgery to have it pinned. Our wonderful Dreams Unlimited agent was quick to explain our travel insurance options but my recovery has been swift and we're going full steam ahead. i'm now in an air cast and have no plans to alter any plans other than the white water rafting portion of our trip. It will not stop me but may slow me down just a little, well the pain pills will also help. The doctor said I can do as much as I can endure and for a bucket list trip I can tolerate a lot of discomfort.

Were heading to Peru in the dry season but of course there is always a chance of rain. Well the forecast is starting to look promising for some very wet days. This is also okay, we are long time visitors to WDW and love rainy days in the parks. Everyone else runs for covers while we eagerly splash through puddles and claim the park for ourselves. I can't see this doing much to stop us other than me slopping around with a wet foot in my air cast. I can see some good stories being told to our friends and family over this. In addition to our camera load we're just going to pack our point and shoot underwater camera so we'll still come home with some great photos and even better memories.

The real concern we just read online today. There are areas in Peru that are under workers strikes. Currently this isn't impacting any of the areas that our ABD trip is heading into and Peru is a big country but that did cause us a little hesitation. Reading the headlines of strike, police deployment and tear gas is less than ideal when heading to a vacation destination. We're trusting in the mouse and laid back travel companions on our adult only trip. I just imagine what this adds onto the stress of the tour guides.

We'll post pictures and updates for our trip when we get back! Here's to wishing for plenty of pixie dust.

Good Luck on your trip. No worries. If the weather people are as good there as here in the U.S. than you will have sunny skies (lol). Strikes can happen anywhere ( re: travel to Europe) and ABD will adjust and provide a wonderful travel experience. Waiting here to read your review. Have a wonderful time.

Loving your attitude! :thumbsup2 We had a gal on our Danube river cruise who sprained her ankle on both sides just a couple of days prior to the trip, and spent the whole thing in a boot, and managed amazingly with it. So I know it can be done!

ENJOY! And do let us know all about it!

Sayhello

Good luck with it! I had a broken foot and wore a boot all through a trip to Ireland and the UK. The only problems I had were when I was climbing tight stairs (like getting on or off a bus). Otherwise, it just meant that I could take more shoes b/c I only had to take shoes for one foot! Upside! ;-)

Hope you have a wonderful Adventure!

So funny, I mentioned to my wife that I would have more room in my suitcase and she said the same things. Of course she meant for her shoes and not mine. =)

Be very careful on the stone steps and paths at Machu Picchu. When we were there, I think it had rained earlier in the day or maybe everything was just wet from the heavy morning fog. I saw several people slip and one person fall, and none of them had any mobility issues. Even if you stay in some of the flatter areas, you'll still be able to see most everything and how incredible it is.

...in France there is today a nation wide strike.........it can happen anytime, anywhere......no worries.

You will probably not be able to the the walk along the salt pans. I sliced my leg open while on the trip last year (12 stitches and a whoppin' big scar), and our guide Rudy said it just would be too much for me. Apparently the walk way is very narrow, with no hand rails and slippery. Many able-bodied ABD-ers said I did the right thing to skip it. They said it was very tough going for some, and I think you will be asked to go to the meeting point by bus.

We leave tomorrow and our entire trip looks like it is going to be rain every day. We've adjusted our outwear to include a couple of water proof jackets instead of just water resistant. My Dr has cleared me to wear rigid soled hiking boots as long as I don't try anything to extreme so I'll be in water proof shoes if the pain isn't too bad. I'll certainly be taking it cautions on anything that looks less than stable.

Thanks everyone for the great advise and input. We are flying out tomorrow for our pre day in Lima. WooHoo!!!
