My temporary disability was I broke my eyeglasses while i was a resort guest and it ruined my trip. Has this happened to anyone out ther and what did you do?

Could it have been taped back together?

I am tremendously nearsighted but at water parks I don't wear glasses and just try to make do such as having to stand on the grass close to the hanging map in order to read it.

It sounds as though your trip is over. Did you not have a spare pair with you? Were they beyond repairable? I currently wear contacts so I just make sure to take an extra pair of contacts plus my regular glasses and my prescription sunglasses.

If I only had one pair and they broke, I'd see about taking a taxi to an eyeglass shop to see if they could be repaired. If they couldn't be repaired, I guess the next step would be to contact your eye doctor at home and see if they could fax your prescription to one of those one-hour eye glass places.

Since your trip is over, I'm not really sure what you are trying to find out here. The best thing would be to make sure to take a backup pair the next time you travel.

I've heard of people borrowing an eyeglass repair kit from the front desk at their resort, but that would probably only help if you had a loose screw that needed tightening.

I didn't have it happen at WDW, but I did have it happen on another vacation. We went to the local Walmart that had a vision center and just bought a set of frames that fit the lenses that I already had. $50 or less later and I was good to go. It might be worth the cost of a cab ride there and back to do the same, as long as it is only the frame that is broke and not the lens.

On a prevention note, one thing that I always take with me to WDW is a old pair of glasses in case mine gets broke or flies off on a ride. Just didn't follow my own advice on the other vacation.

Many years ago, before I started getting plastic lenses, I manage to break one eyeglass lens. Luckily I had a pair of prescription sunglasses, and we were able to find a Lenscrafters which read the prescription and did the repair for me.

And I knew someone else once who managed somehow to lose their glasses. They were able to contact their doctor's office to fax a copy of their prescription to a Lenscrafters and they had new glasses quickly.

Just for information purposes, their closest location is at The Loop, which is at the NW corner of Osceola Parkway and John Young Parkway.

I can't see a thing without my glasses so I always carry my current prescription with me and an old pair of glasses.

Ditto this. In fact I've even been known to wear the old glasses to the park incase I lose them at least it's the old pair.:rotfl:

(spoken by someone who has managed to lose or break not 1 or 2 but 3 pairs of glasses/sunglasses on vacation or at a theme park)

That's me, too. My eyes are so bad, Lenscrafters can't do them in an hour... they have to send them out and it takes 2 weeks.

Honestly, if your glasses are that critical, you should always have something acceptable to wear in case they get damaged. :thumbsup2 I don't go ANYWHERE without a spare pair on me. I couldn't conceive of going on vacation without them :scared1:

Happened to our family. Went to the local Walmart. I think it was a same day service for us. Not too expensive - then back to the parks.

two year old broke hers on the plane on the way. headed to lenscrafters in the florida mall and got them to read the prescription off the old ones and had new pair about 4 hours later.

It was really annoying, since the same thing happened to me once. After I went back home, I immediately ordered 2 pairs of backup eyeglasses from Zennioptical.com. The total was around $30 including shipping. From then on, I always put a backup pair in my bag when I travelled around.

I just ordered more glasses for our upcoming trip. While I can survive without mine, my DD is legally blind without hers (she cannot even read that huge E at the top of the vision chart). I have been known to super glue, tape and rig up broken glasses when necessary, but since I discovered Zenni everyone always has plenty of spare glasses. As long as I don't forget to pack them ;)
