Brokeback Mountain

Went by myself yesterday to see this. I cannot stop thinking about this movie. I am 37 years old and have never had a reaction to a movie this way except maybe Platoon.

I called my husband crying when this movie was over - and we have made plans to see it next weekend.

It was so much more than what I expected.

That was my reaction; it's now been 10 days since I saw it and I can't get it out of my mind.

I am in the list of those who want to see it but cannot get my DH to see it with me...

As a cinephile, I have read much about this movie. But I just have no interest in seeing it. I don't mind gay themes in films, but the descriptions of gay sex scenes in Brokeback Mountain is enough to keep me far far away from this one. Just not what I want to see.

I didn't see the movie, but the other half did and my first question was whether the love scenes were graphic. I explained that I had read that they were and he didn't seem to think so at all. The most intense scene was with them both fully clothed apparently. But lots of kissin' goin' on from what I've been told.

In any case, I didn't really want to see this movie either. Yeah, a gay guy who wasn't interested. Go figure. I just kept telling Joe it was a chick flick, but with guys.

I prefer big explosions, masked killers and end of the world stuff.

I have been wondering how much the descriptions of the love scenes have been exagerated by those looking to turn people away from the movie.

This right here should go a long way to showing us all we are all the same. Most guys just want to see crap get blown up. "Chick" flicks are just that and it doesn't matter if it is Legends of the Fall with guy on girl or this one with guy on guy...I don't want to watch either.

SPOILERS!
I thought the sex scene was pretty short...maybe 25 - 30 seconds. They both have their clothes on. It is very dark and much of it filmed fairly close up. You can tell what is happening by their position and the actions they take but there is no nudity in this sex scene. There is nudity in the two straight sex scenes with the wives.

Generally I am a Science fiction fan. Not so much explosions and action just good sci fi. Don't go to many movies anymore (having to do with over the top action and unbelievable plot points..but that is another story) but this one seemed important to see. I am very glad I went. You may find it ho hum if you ever see it.

Totally agree. Joe tends to like movies that make him ponder life, the universe and everything. I call them "blah blah blah talk talk talk" movies. Hate 'em. When I spend $10 for entertainment, I really do like the movies with big explosions, cities in turmoil, robots run amok, end of the world, half clothed beauties running through the woods, nature attacks, crazed killers in masks, tacky bloody gorey loud flicks. Joe calls those "screaming girl movies." I love 'em, he hates 'em. I freely admit my taste in movies are akin to those typically enjoyed by a 13 year old kid.

Now if you want a feel good movie that I loved, that has a predominantly male cast, then check out The Ringer. Loved it!

Well, truth be told, a part of me things I should go see this particular movie simply because it would be my personal way of showing support to stories like it. If it weren't doing so well financially, I likely would. I've done it before. But because it seems to be sweeping the country by storm, I don't know that my attendance would be duly noted!

For what it's worth, Joe came home talking about it and telling me how great it was. Then he ended his review with a look and said, "but you'd hate it."

What does he mean? Hmmmmm....

From 1970 -about 1985 I was movie crazy. Saw them 2-3 times a week. Now I go 2-3 times a year. For a long time I didn't want to see anything remotly realistic or serious. For a long time I would see only sci-fi or fantasy or things like Dante's Peak and other disater movies...and some action. Lately I have been enjoying more serious films. This is a VERY serious (no relief of tension and on the verge of tears for an hour) movie. Sounds like you wouldn't like it much at all. :)

tee hee... that sounds exactly like me and DW. If you were to look at my Netflix queue it would show that every other movie is something a 13 yo boy would like ("Dukes of Hazzard" -yee ha!), and every other movie is something like "Under the Tuscan Sun"

I was just basing my decision on what I read in Entertainment Weekly and Premier mags :confused3

I also wonder if that all the acclaim and Oscar buzz it is getting is due to it being a "taboo" topic and necessarily on its cinematic merit. Others on here have already stated that other movies are much better but are not getting near the buzz probably due to them being less "taboo."

This is totally off-topic - but I think this is the longest thread I have ever started! cool!

Wouldn't be the first time.

That "Passion" movie got a lot of attention, but thankfully few awards.

This is true, but hardly unusual. That's why I understand when movie fans stay away when they hear about Something Important in Cinema History; most of the time it's just smoke and mirrors. But this film is so much more than Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. Go see it, and not because it's Important -- just to see some fantastic acting and a good story worked out to its logical conclusion.

Congratulations!!! Kinda makes you feel special, doesn't it!

I am a fan of both Jake Gyllenhall and Heath Ledger, but my understanding is that this is a sad movie - and I am just not in the mood to see anything tragic or heartrending right now.
