My mom is coming to visit for her birthday and my sister and I are going to take her to see a show. She likes musicals, no Shrek (I personally loved it!) and no Disney. Something that offers discount tickets would be nice. I checked out broadway box and there are a lot of discounts listed, but a lot of the shows I haven't heard of. Mamma Mia is out since the seats were not good for the date I checked (April 18th). Thanks!!

Update below!

Since Spamalot has closed, I'm going to suggest "In the Heights" if you can get tickets. The show was fantastic.

Wicked ... but I don't know if it offers discount tickets ... but it's a GREAT musical :goodvibes ...

Wicked is sold out forever.

I'll check out the Heights, thanks!

On Broadway: Guys and Dolls (classic Broadway that I thought, despite bad reviews, was very well done)
Off-Broadway: The Marvelous Wonderettes (all music from the 1950's and 60's - fantastic show with a great cast)

How about South Pacific?
I would suggest West Side Story but that is probably sold out!

I would recommend In the Heights as well. It's a great show and there should be plenty of discounts around.

I also enjoyed the new production of Guys & Dolls.

The new version of Hair is supposed to be terrific, and I'm also hearing good reviews of Next to Normal (I have no idea what that one is about).

Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Billy Elliot rarely have discounts...but all 3 of them were terrific, so if you decide to go full price you can't go wrong with any of those.

Next to Normal has good reviews but I can't figure out what it's about. Nothing I read really says EXACTLY what it is. In The Heights has no discounts for the time we are looking (4/18). I was thinking maybe Hair, she would probably like that.

Not sure if it's still playing, but The Color Purple is amazing, I was moved to tears on numerous occasions.

Phantom of the Opera is phenomenal, and it may be cheesy, but Grease is a real feel good show.

I haven't seen it yet (but really want to), but Chicago might be fun...it might also be sold out though.

I don't think you can go wrong with any show, it's just such an experience in and of itself!

ok, I'll stop gushing...good luck!

The Color Purple and Grease are long gone, and Chicago is rarely sold out.

Honestly? I would wait until she arrives, then head into the city to a TKTS booth, and see what they have for that night. Most shows don't have presale tickets at a discount..you'll do much better at the TKTS booth. We use the one right in Times Sq.
My dd, 15, is dying to see "Next to Normal". Me? Not a bit. Basically, it's (as I take it) about a family and how they deal with life's issues. We're seeing "Hair" in Aug, and I'm really hoping "Next to Normal" isn't an option then.

I just wanted to give a little update on what we saw. I bought tickets to Next to Normal a couple of days ago using a broadwaybox.com code. So for $60 we got 4th row seats, center orchestra and the show was FANTASTIC!!!! Highy rec. it!! Very moving, and the cast was great! We were all in tears at the end. I didn't expect it to be what it was since no one discloses anything about it in their reviews (and I won't either so I don't spoil it), but it's great!
