British Flag on Independence Day

I saw it yesterday, but I did not see it today on the holiday so maybe those guests have checked out.

There was a USA flag hanging on another balcony as well.

I thought the placement of both flags was a little disrespectful. I thought the red, white, and blue bunting I saw hanging from another balcony was the better choice. I just didn't feel that it was a proper way to display the flag, even if it is a patriotic holiday.

I don't think it was a big deal if they wanted to display their flag. The flag itself didn't bother me a bit.

Well, it seems that after 236 years, they've adjusted to the idea.

There are codes to be followed when hanging another flag next to the stars and stripes. But even if they "messed that part up" I could let it slide. Many Americans don't even know how our flag should be displayed. I'm assuming they did it as a sign of respect for the holiday (or possibly, because it represents the nationalities of those in the room) rather than to stir the pot. Innocent enough, and no need to read any further into it, IMO.

I wouldn't post the US flag for no appropriate reason while on another Terra Firma and try to follow the basic guidelines and encourage others to do the same. BUT, here in Khaliphonia I've seen far worse than your scenario. And of course that doesn't make it right. One should not post one's colors from thier post while at "The World". Your welcome to fly your colors on ones self while visiting though, after all it is the World. But a bit insulting and tacky to fly yours from the balcony.

But then again, I argue with folks who paste a sticker of the American flag next the Union First sticker on the back of their Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/etc. Now theirs some Left Coast logic for you.

No big deal, if these were guest balconies. UK guests have just as much right to their national pride, regardless of what day it is.

In related flag irritations though, I'm a relatively recent (1 year) transplant to Texas, and it's a continual source of annoyance to me that the state flag is plastered everywhere, usually without the US flag, and NEVER the other way around. The identity of folks down here seems to be "Texan first, American second," and it feels unpatriotic to me.

We noticed the same thing in Tx while we were there on vacation. It was over the 4th of July weekend a few years ago, it seemed that Texans do not even celebrate Independence Day. Tons of stae flags ano US flags. Very different from where I live on Long Island.

I would assume that England has a similar holiday promoting pride for their country, but I don't know for sure and I certainly have no idea when it is. I'm sure it's the same for them because why would they care when our Independence Day is. It's nothing to take personally.

We celebrate Independence Day. In our area, you will see both flags routinely because Texas pride is about as prevalent as US patriotism. We also have different laws when it comes to flag displays.

Please don't take this the wrong way... I would not hang a flag up from my DVC balcony personally however I could care less about July 4th. To me it's no more than the day I have to pay my property taxes by. I don't observe it; why would I? I don't live in the US. I don't take notice of the day other than it being plastered on Canadian airwaves from US TV stations. I am by no means offended by it, in Canada we have our own celebrations on the 1st... but to me the 4th just a regular day. I would without guilt wear my Team Canada TShirt or hat as I would any other day and would expect that nobody would care.

Why would or should someone not display their national pride; it doesn't make July 4th any less meaningful to an American...

Hey All!!

DH and I are at the World and noticed something that I wonder how others feel about.

We were on the monorail yesterday to the Magic Kingdom and on Bay Lake Towers, we noticed a U.S. flag hung over a balcony. Near by, was a British flag hung the same way.

I have my own feelings about this, and my DH expressed his to me when he saw it. Before I elaborate, I was wondering how others felt about this before I let my feelings known!

Keep in mind, Independence Day represents the emancipation from British rule and a precursor to war. While I hold no ill feelings towards our British friends, I am wondering if others feel this:

a) no big deal
b) offensive
c) insulting but nothing to get in a twist over

On the monorail, I noticed some others who expressed a sentiment.

What do you all think?

Draping a British flag over BLT balcony = lots of UK visitors here, our nation's best allies. They prefer WDW over DLP, that's a great compliment. I think nothing of it.

I saw it, too. It was odd. I don't really get their point. It isn't like they won that battle and are trying to rub it in, so...I don't know.

I wouldn't hang our flag out in some other country on their big day, but I didn't really care much that they did.

Being a Brit myself, who has lived in the US for 8 yrs now, I can tell you one thing that I am proud of, the fact that no matter what, we always have your back and vice versa

Even if they did, it's no worse than the Confederate flags one sees flying over some areas.

I thought that, too, that they might do it any time they're vacationing, like, "Hey, we're here!"

Back in the 80s, I had a boyfriend who wore a British flag shirt, like Joe Elliott.
