Brita water filter vs. buying bottled water

We go through 1 gallon/day of spring water. Honestly, it's a pain to buy it, lug it in, and then recycle all of the bottles. It's also an expense at nearly $1/gallon (we buy it at BJ's, so the price isn't too bad). I was wondering if we would do better to buy a Brita pitcher/filter thing and filter our own water:confused3 Is it as good as spring water? I worry about chemicals and whatnot being in our tap water, which is why we drink spring water in the first place. I'm interested to hear what other people have to say about this.

We have the PUR water filter pitcher and it's great. We always have cold water and it tastes great. I think it tastes better than bottled water in a jug. I'm sure the Brita would be fine, as well.

I am concerned about the Bisphenol A leaching into water from those cheap plastic jugs or bottles, so the pitcher was a better idea for us. Also, bottled water plastic is quickly accumulating in landfills and some bottled water is just tap water filtered. Examples: Dasani, Vitamin Water, I'm sure there are more.

We have a brita pitcher in the fridge and it is great. I actually keep it filled and then some old fiji water bottles (pour in the brita water) to take with me when I work out instead of buying bottle water each time I go to the gym.

We have a Pur "pitcher" (it is the bigger container with the spout) and love it! Another thing to consider is the Abita guy (or any company). You can get a water cooler like a lot of work places have for your house. The price is pretty reasonable and they deliver it to your door!

One other thing is that unless you're specifically buying the fluoridated bottled water, it's probably not. Filtered water doesn't remove the fluoride. Most dentists will recommend that kids drink tap water for the fluoride or take a supplemental tablet. Toothpaste is generally spit out so the fluoride isn't ingested.

I just bought a side-by-side fridge (which I swore I'd never get) for the filtered water on the door because my kids were relying too much on bottled water. Gotta take care of those choppers!

We already do one cup a day of tap water for DD so she doesn't have to take flouride drops. Our ped. said that we had to do one or the other.

OK, so where does one buy a Pur or Brita pitcher, and how much can I expect to spend? What store has the cheapest price? We have BJ's, Target, Wal-Mart, and all of the other usual chain stores around here.

I love my Brita, the only time I drink bottle water is if I'm going out and need to bring it with me.

Has anybody tried the filters you attach directly to your faucet?

Something like this?

We have a PUR filter on our faucet and I think it is great! I water tastes horrid.. this way it filters out all the gross stuff and tastes MUCH better!

We still buy some water bottles for on the go (we are lazy and should just fill my stainless water bottle) but at home the PUR filter does the job and is MUCH cheaper!

Our PUR pitcher was like 17 or 18 dollars at Walmart, pretty cheap. We also have a PUR filter that screws on the faucet and that was more like 25 or 30, but in our current apartment our faucet is weird so it doesn't fit on it. The filters last for about 3 months and you can get like 3 for 25 dollars or so.

this is the on the faucet one we have:

the line lets you know when to change the filter...very handy

DH & I got a Brita H20 pitcher for a wedding present in '93. We use it every day & it makes a huge difference to our H20. We live in a rural area w/ extremely hard H20 w/ lots of iron. In the top inside part where you put in the tap H20 it is orange from the iron, but the bottom clear part is crystal clear (well, kind of scuffed after 13+ years!) When I put in a new filter (which isn't nearly as often as they recommend ;) ) I run it through the dishwasher too. It has held up incredibly well.

Seems simple enough to install, I think I might get one of these :thumbsup2

Does your city test your water? Ours gives us the printout yearly after they test it. We used the Brita pitcher and it works great (our home water isn't really bad to begin with). We also use the water bottles at Disney too.

I just read in our local newspaper (Rochester, NY)that drinking 8 glasses of tap water a day for a year costs 50 cents but drinking the same amount by buying individual bottles of water cost $1500 a year :scared1: !! Plus all those bottles go in a landfill. I'd buy the pitcher.

We installed water filters on our pipes, so the whole house has filtered water. We like having bathroom and kitchen water filtered. We have been buying bottled water at WDW, but now that we have Owner's Locker, I'm thinking that a filtered water pitcher would be better than putting more plastic in landfills.

I'm not sure. It's probably not that bad, since it actually doesn't taste horrible unfiltered. It's just always stuck in my mind that that Dr. Weil guy recommends always drinking bottled water because tap water has so many contaminants.

I bought the Brita filter on Sunday at BJ's. It ended up being $28, so I'm still not sure if I got a good deal or not:confused3

We have two Pur pitchers that we fill constantly. We like the taste of filtered water better than bottled water like Poland Spring. I was also concerned about the lack of fluoride in the bottled water. I grew up in a town that did not have fluoridated city water and my teeth paid the price. In those days, fluoride drops were not routinely prescribed, if available.

Has anyone used these pitchers for well water? My in-laws have a well and I won't drink their water, it tastes and smells bad, although they like it. Anyway, I bought them a PUR water pitcher for christmas. This one is pretty neat, it even allows you to add flavor if you want and it came with a free water bottle for like $25 at Walmart. I love our regular one, but we have city water, I just wonder if anyone has used their for well water. Can it work miracles???

I thought there had been some recent studies proving that average bottled water has just as many or more contaminants as tap..... we drink brita filter,as ours tastes heavily chlorinated without it- The pither was about $15,and the filters cost about 17 for a 3 pack at Walmart- each one lasts for a couple of months- you can wash and reuse them? I've never heard of that.....
unless the bottle is specifically from some french aquifer hidden away in the woods(expensive) I just assume it's from some municipal tap somewhere and no better than my water at home..... all water has stuff in it,and most towns test regularly for safety- I wish they didn't add the flouride,ick- but that's a whole other thread.....
