Not sure where to put this but I have chronic sinusitis and use a neilmed irrigation bottle that is 8 ounces and I will need it during the flight...Will I be able to carry it through security empty and then fill it up after the checkpoint? Has anyone had any experience with taking empty bottles.. like misters for instance?

Ooooooooo.....good question. I don't know. I'm eager to see what others tell you.

I can't imagine an empty bottle would be a problem. We often carry empty thermos-type bottles for our kids and fill them with water past the gate.

I have often carried empty water bottles on board. As a matter of fact, TSA suggested to me that I just fill it up inside the security area before getting on the plane. :-)

Thanks for the replies!!! How about contacts? I have the one day disposables and there is liquid in them...I probably will be bringing more than would fit in the one quart bad and I do not want to put them in the checked luggage..

You shouldn't have any trouble taking the empty bottle past security. I just got back from a trip and took an empty water bottle with me, and no one ever questioned it. I filled it up in the drinking fountain before I got on the plane and it wasn't a problem at all.

Contact lenses (and solution / eye drops, etc.) count as a medical item so they can be put in a separate bag from your 3-1-1 bag. You are supposed to "declare" it, so when going through security, I just put my bag of contacts, solution, etc. in the bin with my quart bag of liquids.

It is the official word on everything you need to know about clearing security.

That said; not only is an empty water bottle fine, but there is an exemption for medical necessary liquids, and medicine both prescription and non.

You can take on contact solution in excess of 3oz or just get a travel size bottle. Contacts are fine as well just tell the TSA agent you have them (ie "declare them").

I usually put my medicines and contact stuff in a separate zip lock in additon to the 3-1-1 bag and put it through outside of my carryon.

Brought my Neilmed bottle w/ me last time I flew. Can't travel w/o it--they are great! No worries on this one....

Great question. I can't live without my Neilmed bottle! I'd never thought about flying with it, so I'm glad others have and haven't had any problems. I will know for the future!
