Breastfeeding in MK

My wife found a device called a "breast pump."

Tried that... didn't work for my wife. Manual, battery powered, A/C, you name it and we tried it.

What's even more odd than someone recommending the HOP as an area to breastfeed is me getting into this discussion.

But anywayzzzz, my wife used the breastpump linked below and it worked great (or so I was told). She also used this at work when feeding at the spicket wasn't possible.

She even overpumped at times and froze milk in specially designed containers for later use.

I personally dont have any children...but the suggestion of sending mothers to feed their babies in the ladies rooms sounds disgusting to me. I mean...would YOU choose to eat in a bathroom...I mean they arent clean or hygenic!

Is that really a serious option? I mean...alot of people use Disney transportation.
I think discreet feeding is a great option.

Brian- my wife sometimes has frozen some, too. They have little bags from gerber or something that stand up in the freezer. I'd have to dig around them to find the ice cream.

We ended up with a power one that rents from the hospital or the dr. office. It is quite a set up. It looks sort of like the one in the link but not as portable really. The first one that she had gotten before the baby wasn't very good, it was battery or electric - it was Firstyears brand, and never really worked out. But she really likes the manual one a lot. It is Avent Isis. It seems to me like it would be a lot of work on the wrist, but she doesn't mind it, and I think sometimes she likes it better than the electric. When we go to Disney that's all she is planning on taking.

But Geoff, it seems to me from talking to people that it is all so different for different women and different babies. What works for one doesn't for another, and basically it turns out that it is all good when the mom and baby find something that works for them.

I can understand why the lady would like the HOP to breastfeed because as a mother, I am always looking for ways to allow my DD to cool off and rest a bit when the day is getting long and hot. If I had an infant I would be looking for opportunity to breastfeed my child where it is cool and somewhat comfortable.

Nursery's are great and all, but you have to go sit by yourself, away from the rest of your family and really devote a lot of time. At the HOP, your whole family can go together, it's nice and cool, dark, and more comfortable than a nursery.

There are some mothers out there (God Bless Ya!!) that are awesome at nursing. My girlfriend could be nursering her DD and you barely knew it. I on the other hand was not talented at all w/ nursing my DD so I never nursed in public and I didn't nurse my 2nd DD at all for this same reason.

As finding it funny that someone would enjoy the HOP for this reason I do not. Reason being is my DH and I only enjoy Small World because it's a chance to get off our feet and get out of the heat. If I went to WDW when it was 50 degrees, I would only go to Small World if my DD insisted.

I just thought I would throw my opinion out there!

Yes, sex and using the bathroom are natural and are not accepted public practices. Eating is an accepted public practice.
Nursing can be done very discreetly.

People use their mouths and hands for sexual and non sexual practices. And people are able to accept a distinction between these practices. It should be the same with a woman's breasts (which aren't usually exposed during nursing, anyhow). Most nursing infants look like sleeping babies nuzzled up against their mother's body.

What's the difference about the plate or the breast. OK, so you wouldn't watn to "eat" int eh bathroom, but would you want to drink, too? Would you buy a bottle of soda and think, "Ahh now the bathroom would be the most appealing place for me to drink this?"

As for bathrooms having areas for nursing, I can't think of one bathroom in WDW (other than the one baby center in each park) that has a comfortable chair for a mom to sit with a baby to nurse her. So where should the mom sit -- on the toilet? Is that where you would want to bring your bottle of soda?

Ok so where would I sit? On the toilet? How would I rest the arm that the baby is leaning on? Maybe I am Wonder Woman? I think most people who have a problem with breastfeeding forget that the breast is not meant as a sexual organ. People have turned it into that but it was intended to feed a baby,hence breast feeding. I buy special clothes that make it easy to be discreet (nursing clothing) and I do the best I can, but when Luke is hungry he eats. I would bet that it is easier for you to turn away and avoid looking at this "offense" than it is for me to deny my child his right to eat.

Why do so many people seem to get upset regarding breast feeding in public but think nothing of prancing around wearing a 2 x 2 square inch of cloth and call it a bathing suit. Whenever I have noticed anyone breast feeding in a semi-public area it has been very discreet. Some of the attire and bathing suits nowadays is a downright shame - stop worrying about a baby covering a mothers breast.

I really cannot understand why people get so offended when they see a mother nursing her child discreetly. If you can't see anything, what is the big deal? I think most mothers who nurse are discreet when they are in public. (Yes, I did breastfeed both my daughters)I got very good at covering up, no skin was ever exposed. Another post asked why anyone would want to expose themselves in public...of course we don't...that's why we are discreet..but our babies need to eat. I also have nursed my baby during many of the mentioned attractions. The reasons?

-I don't have to separate from the rest of the family or make them wait while the baby eats

-I know some people are uncomfortable once they realize a baby is being nursed, if you do it during one of the attractions, chances are they will not even realize it b/c contrary to a comment on one of the other posts, we do not enjoy exposing ourselves.

-Getting to one of the nursing centers is just not convenient when baby decides she/he is hungry (sorry if that sounds lazy )

-The cool, darkness of one of the attractions is more relaxing for the baby and lets them finish quicker. I can think of more than one occasion when all the activity going on around the baby on a bench or in a restaurant distracted the baby. It took longer, and it was harder to be as discreet b/c she kept poking her head out from under the burper.

If a mother is being discreet and you cannot see anything that offends you, what is the big deal? Just because "you know" what she is doing should not make it offensive. If it does to you personally, look away. Pediatricians encourage women to nurse their babies for the health benefits, it's no wonder more don't because of the attitude of so many people.

When my breast comes out it is for a good reason. And Janet's point was...

Aaaahhh yes, spoken like a very young man who will never have to struggle to find someplace to feed a fussy baby. I can see so many similarities between feeding babies under a burp cloth and ripping off a bra on a nationally televised family event.

To be young again and to know everything....

First of all, when you rnurse, you don't necessarily "take your breast out in public." (I am an extremely modest person and would never expose myself to others ) Nursing can be done very discreetly.

As for comparing nursing to changing a dirty diaper in a public placeor running nude near water, both of those things creat very unsanitary conditions for everyone around. Nursing does not create an unsanitary condition for anyone.

Just a response to comparing nursing in public to Janet Jackson - this is offensive and I didn't even nurse my second child. WOW...you have no idea what nursing your baby is all about.

I mentioned earlier that I had a friend that was very talented at nursing - I never, and I mean never, saw her nipple or anything else - she was great!!!! as other mothers I am sure.

Janet Jackson did what she did to get a reaction - and she did, more of one than she ever imagined. Mothers breastfeeding their babies in public only want a reaction from one person, their baby!!! People don't breastfeed in public because they want people to notice them, they do it because they love their child and need to feed them.

WOW...I just can't believe you compared this to Janet Jackson. You really should be ashamed of yourself!!

Why should I care about your fussy baby?

Like I said, not everyone does it like you.

Sometimes there is some exposure.

Considering my major right now, I am just about at that mark of knowing everything.
