Breastfeeding, I support it but...

So we should teach our children that it's ok to let one breast out there for the world to see while the other breast is "working"? Have to disagree with you on that.

We teach our children that there are certain areas that are private and to let us know if anyone tries to touch them there, etc. But then in the next breath we are supposed to let them know its ok to go somewhat nude? :confused3

My daughter knows breasts are there for feeding children but she also knows we don't expose ourselves needlessly. She has seen many of women feed their children discretely and is very capable of understanding the biologies of it all.

So this is where you tell her what YOUR ideas/beliefs on acceptable behaviou are, but that no everyone does it that way. For the lady who was BF, it is probably so culturally acceptable she never thought it would be a big deal here. And if she did any preplanning (not using the DIS of course) she would have seen that is legal as well.

That's how we handle things whether people are smoking or using foul language or acting in other ways we wish our children weren't exposed to. It's an opportunity to tell them what you think is acceptable.

How come no one who has breastfed (for more than a few weeks) has ever seen someone do it completely topless or nude or whatever? I'd like to see it to see what my reaction would be. Something tells me I will never come across such a sight....Of course I'm still nursing a 3+ y/o, so breasts are like elbows to me.

I never said I have a hang-up regarding my child witnessing breastfeeding. I have a "hang-up" on my child witnessing needless nudity at WDW.

Oh I see, so if your child saw the breast fully exposed when the baby was about to latch on, or pull off thats okay, but seeing the other breast while the baby is latched on is not okay? Sorry, that really doesn't make much sense.

Odd that you find a woman breastfeeding a "better photo op" than Jasmine. But, to each their own, I suppose!:rolleyes1

Actually, I have my own set to look at if I'm that bored. :rotfl: The Jasmine remark is from when a little girl I know told Jasmine, "You're my Daddy's favorite," and Jasmine replied, "I'm ALL the Daddys' favorite." ;) Seriously, there are usually way more men in line to meet/get pics taken with meet Jasmine than most other princesses.

My point is, I'll hazard a guess that if a mom was BFing with the spare one on display and thought that was perfectly fine and dandy and that no one should mind.......She wouldn't think it so fine and dandy if someone decided to start taking pics of her. But why not? If no one is supposed to be bothered by her extra breast being on display, then she has no right to be bothered by having her photo taken. Fair is fair.

Then again, maybe it wouldn't bother her at all. Someone would have to test the theory to find out. I'm sure someone would volunteer. Of course, as a previous poster pointed out, the level of interest in photo taking may hinge on certain factors.

Absolutely - while travelling abroad with my daughter I have used such experiences as teaching lessons. "Mom why does such and such do this, etc.".

And I completely understand cultural differences - I lived overseas but the old addage of "Do as in Rome as the Romans do" goes for the states as well. I respect other countries and their cultural while in their countries and I would fully expect those to do that in this country as well.

Well then, heck....Tourists, start snapping away with those cameras! If it's perfectly nothing at all you mind sharing with the crowds at WDW, then run down and get the Photopass guy while you're at it. Ahhhh....the memories....:rolleyes1 Who needs to stand in line for Jasmine when you've got a better photo op right outside the ice cream shop? Wonder if they could "magic" Tinkerbell into one of those pics?

For the record, this is a non-issue for me. I covered up when I breastfed. If some choose not too, I really don't care. I think they look rather silly sitting there with one **** hanging out while the other is in use but life goes on for me.

However, to touch on what you said EMom, I wonder how people would feel if they were photographed in this state? After all, we have a website dedicated to ugly shoes so why not have one for hot ****s? :lmao: I am sure there would be outrage if there was a website dedicated to such a thing. However, my feeling is if you put it out there, in this day and age you can expect someone to take a picture and post it somewhere. Is there really a difference if someone takes a picture of a person's ugly shoes vs. their ****?

The issue is, as this thread shows, there is no clear "social rule" in the USA about something like this. The back and forth that has gone on in the courtrooms is also testament to this fact. In other countries some of those customs are embraced by a large majority of their population. Here in the USA we have such a diversity of nationalities and customs, that the issue of a breast exposed in public has no absolute rule. We can only go by our laws, and they say she is protected.

Are you serious? I would think it was odd if strangers were taking pictures of a fully clothed tourist they didn't know. If I was eating lunch in a full body covering nun's habit and someone came up and took my picture? I would think that was strange.

Children are not born thinking that women's breasts are taboo -- that is drilled into them by others. And that is the shame in the situation, not a woman feeding her child.

LOL! So, we have learned that she is protected in being exposed. It is like an oxymoron! :lmao:

I'm glad you quoted my post as I saw an oversight in it on my part. I should have made it clear that I was speaking about a breast exposed during breastfeeding, not during Mardi Gras. :thumbsup2

Actually I was brought up in a very Christian household, and I was never, once, told that my body, in it's natural state was taboo or sinful. The one who is committing the sin is the one who is harboring the lustful thoughts about the nudity, or is using their nudity in a lewd/seductive fashion (of which breastfeeding falls under neither category). But, again, the act of simply being nude is actually man's original, God-made state of being.

OK. Then I dare you to attend any Christian church nude. Or at lease get inside the church and then strip down. I bet it wouldn't last long.
Also, each denomination, each church and even each family has it's own interpretation of nudity. I know lots of Christians who believe that nudity is a sin. I know some that even believe that showing legs and arms is a sin. Mainly because it supposedly leads to other sins.

Since religion is really not allowed around these parts I will only go so far as to say that it is a silly notion to attend Church in the nude. Not because of any sort of sin, but because it is against the law. Breastfeeding in Church, which is really the central topic here, is, however, protected by the law and, as such, would be allowed.

Have you been on the internet for very long??? You can find plenty of sites with hot ****s on them..... ;)

I really don't have a problem with it, it's natural and I can respect it. I don't gawk or stare...I just move along.

Sorry, I should have made it clear that it would be posted HERE on The Dis. It doesn't seem to bother anyone that some people go to Disney and seek out people with ugly shoes and photograph them. I wonder how this post would go over on The Dis:

"Check out all the pictures I took while I was at Disney this weekend. They are all pictures of breastfeeding moms with their ****s handing out. Click on the link and let me know which ones you think are the hottest."
