Breastfeeding, I support it but...

Well, none of the brochures show buttcrack, braless women, women in skintight white shorts with nothing under them, butt hanger shorts (where the cheeks hang out), hairy necks, smelly people who don't have basic hygiene, camel toe, speedos, etc. but yet we get to see that on every trip.:surfweb:

Every trip? Can I please travel with you next time? :rotfl:

Really - of all the mothers I know that did not nurse it had nothing to do with being afraid of the discomfort with public nursing or exposing themselves.

My unscientific study concluded that most of my friends and family that did not nurse formula fed because it was easier for them and they never had to worry about pumping or worse feeding in public.......

This made me laugh. I was just thinking I would much rather have my children see something as natural as breasts/breastfeeding rather than some of the ludicrous outfits some people choose to wear to Disney. I think they may need to be shielded from extremely bad taste! :rotfl:

Not sure how I feel about that, but I know I wouldn't have done it for the simple fact that when letdown occurred I often would leak out of both breasts at the same time and would have caused a big mess.

I'll throw "Dis police" into that mix. As in why the OP felt the need to "police" the situation & "block" the breastfeeding mom from public view. If the mom was in the wrong, all the OP had to do was point her out to a cast member. Or MYOB & just move along.

I did not feel I was policing the situation. I spoke to the mother and told her I would stand here until she was done and she smiled and nodded (though I have to admit she may not have understood what I said). I was doing what I thought was polite and would hope someone would do for me in the same situation.

The whole "Well, in EUROPE they....." argument bugs me. Newsflash: WDW isn't in Europe. It's in the US and here, letting your hoo-hoos hang out on Main Street in MK under the pretense of "nursing" when a kid's mouth is only attached to ONE of them is not accepted by the majority of our society.....Especially the ones who have taught their kids that certain body parts are private and not to be shared with 70,000 of your closest friends.

My sister nursed three kids and in public at that. No one ever had a clue. She never flashed even one of her girls, let alone had the spare one hanging out for all the world to see. When I go to Europe and I enter a cathedral in certain countries, I cover my head. In Russia, I take off my shoes when I enter someone's home. I do my best to follow the social customs and not pull the "Well in AMERICA, we ........" Because I'm not IN America.

Well, when you're in the big middle of MK, you are not in Europe or any place other than the US, and it's common courtesy to follow the social customs here. That means NOT letting your breasts hang out when at least one is not even serving a purpose. Slap a kid on the other one, keep it occupied and I'm good.

Not to go kinda OT but has anybody seen the BF-ing episode of Married with Children?

Sorry, my brain goes weird ways.

Women not having the vote was a "social custom" in the US for years. As were many other silly social rules. Glad we are able to move on in some parts of society. And I am happy that some people are willing to challenge the norms to move ahead as a society.

You're saying this, regardless of the law that says the woman may be exposed while nursing in public?

Sorry, but I don't believe practicing modesty is akin to being denied the vote. I am not more of a forward-thinking woman if I teach my DD that her breasts are for public display than if I teach her she can publicly breastfeed without letting the world see her breasts.....especially the one that's not being used. There is no reason for the breast that is NOT breastfeeding to be on display. There just isn't. WHAT? Does it want to see Main Street or the Castle? I don't think keeping your breasts away from public view is a silly social rule. I think it's polite.

You know, there are other body parts that serve perfectly normal functions, but I don't want to see them in public either. ;)

How is another woman breastfeeding affecting your own modesty? What you are saying is that you want everyone to have your personal views. I believe there is a name for that. So, are your children not allowed to go to art museums? Also, I would stay away from D.C., and particularly the Library of Congress. Lots of nude statues there!:rotfl:

Yes, NY state legalized full "upper frontal" female public nudity back in 1992 (as long as it is not being used for commercial purposes).

But interestingly that didn't lead to an expected loosening in social mores there. As example, the "naked cowgirl" in Times Square performs with key parts of her breasts covered and sensitivity over public breastfeeding is just as high in NYC as it is anywhere.

In fact, the promoters of "anything goes" are so disappointed in how little impact the 1992 law has had, they literally stage an event every year just to remind the public that it exists (family friendly shot -- repeat, previously published in family media -- from 2009 below):

Disney has a policy that says women can be topless while nursing in their parks/public?

Florida State Law says that the woman may be exposed during breastfeeding. The Law states things such as a woman breastfeeding in public is exempt from breaking laws dealing with lewd & lascivious acts, exposure of sexual organs. Florida Statutes also states: "A mother's breastfeeding of her baby is not under any circumstance 'harmful to minors.'"

I don't think Disney needs to have a policy, since the State Laws have already granted that policy.

No, a big part of why people refuse to nurse is because they are afraid of the discomfort with public nursing and being accused of "exposing" themselves......

We're going to have to disagree on that one. In my birthing class, they went over nursing. I hadn't made up my mind to nurse or not, but I really didn't need to see a class on it if I did. It's pretty basic. Two other women also didn't attend, also because they felt like it was being pushed upon them to do so, and their babies would end up bottom feeders because they didn't nurse.

If you do nurse, you can find many private places to do so. And please don't anyone give me the "would you have your child eat his chicken nuggets in the bathroom??" argument.

Frankly, some women are downright obnoxious and judgemental about nursing. And that turns a lot of people off of nursing.

No I do not have pictures and I guess I would consider her attractive. Young, Latin female.

Well then with that additional information I would say it was OK to be doing what she was doing.

There is nothing wrong with a woman using her breast to feed her baby in public. I see no reason to have the other one hanging out, flapping in the wind. I have an adolescent ds - let him believe, for as long as possible, that breasts stay high and perky, and not long and lean after his wife bears him children. I want grandchildren! ;)
