BREAKING NEWS on CNN: Monorail Accident Kills One IN WDW

The other issue that's a big problem for drivers (of all vehicles) now is texting. I was watching a show about it recently - I wasn't aware of it before, but apparently texting while driving is contributing to many accidents on the roads.

Would it make sense that a monorail driver would feel comfortable talking on phone or texting with nobody being in the front compartment?

I'm not saying that's what happened. Just that's it's been a problem for other "drivers" lately.

There was only 6 people 9besides the drivers)on both of the monorails, or just 6 people that had to be rescued by the impact?

How sad. Prayers for everyone there!

Of course-it could have been a mechanical problem as well.
They will get to the bottom of it soon enough........

So sad! We've ridden up front many times and heard all about the safety systems in place. I am going to hold off on speculation and wait for more info to come out.

tragic...

Just got off the phone with my brother, who's a monorail driver, and he said he knew the driver. Said he was a great cast member and it's a big loss.

SO sad...

Scary thought that he could have had a child up there with him... I'm wondering how many will want to ride with the driver now.. or if they'll even allow it now.

What info would need to come out?

Is there any possible scenario where it's NOT Disney's fault and they don't need to make some serious changes?:confused3

I'm a huge supporter of Disney, both emotionally and financially, but I'm not going to let them sweep stuff like this under the carpet. They need to be called onto the carpet, not swept under it.

I'd say anything is possible, and we can't jump to any conclusions. We dont' know if it was mechanical or driver error. Of course DIsney has final responsibility, but doesn't mean accidents can't happen. From what I know, DIsney always tries to right any wrongs it may have. Don't let your emotions over this specific incident be so hasty in blame. We all know what happened is horrible, but just because you have your opinion, doesn't mean people can't hold off on forming theirs.

Two scenarios I thought of: Suicide or Heart Attack/Stroke/Etc. I didn't think either would be possible until I read that article that there is an override feature available to the monorail driver, which could have been intentionally or unintentionally engaged.

So, while I am more than sure it is some type of equipment/signal failure, there are other scenarios that could have taken place.

The monorails move at a top speed of 40mph. If this accident did happen near EPCOT, we all know that this stretch of track is one where top speed is regularly reached. My first guess would be that the track system failed to notify the driver of the stopped monorail before it was too late to stop the train safely.

The accident happened either at or near the TTC station.

Thoughts go out to the CM's family who are grieving the loss of a loved one today. :sad1:

And also to the family that was riding the monorail at the time of the crash. Though they weren't injured, I bet they are badly shaken up.

Yes the driver could have had some type of medical emergency. I work in a hospital, people crash their car all the time if they are having a stroke, heart attack, or diabetic reaction or seizure.

Did you notice that some pics have the monorails sitting outside the station and the video they are in the station???

did it crash and then they moved it inside the station? or did the momentum bring them in....scary scary either way.

its so sad...I wonder how long they will close the monorail....after the deadly accident at DL Big Thunder it was closed for a long time...and it was scary to ride it right after it opened back up because you couldn't help but think of what happened there...at least for me it was that way. :guilty::sad2:

The video of after the crash, trying to help the driver, shows that they are INSIDE the station. Check the link in the OP.

Would they have moved the monorails after the crash to get the people out?

After the accident they moved the monorails to the station to get the people out etc....that is why some shots show it not at the staion and some shots show it at the station.

Yes the driver could have had some type of medical emergency.

Which is why the final safety systems take control out of the driver's hands completely, and should have applied the emergency brakes automatically. I'm wondering if we're maybe looking at a catestrophic failure of the braking systems? It's really far too early to tell though.
