Bran new to renting points- ??'s for DVC owners/point renters

I hope you don't mind me asking about renting DVC points.
I read a fellow DISérs post last night about DVC and it got me thinking about renting points.

To be honest, until tonight I had never given them a second thought, until now . I assumed that this was something I would never be able to afford. Now, it seems to totally make sense (renting points). Can you please read my proposed plan and tell me if it makes any sense or not.

Dec 12 or 13 (check-in), 2006 until Dec 17 (check-out): stay at a value and hope for a general code to come out. If not, pay rack rate.

Dec 17 (check-in), 2006 until Dec 22 (check-out) :
stay at OKW, by renting points from someone. This is considered choice season and would need 8 points per night (mid-week stay, studio). I checked allearsnet.com and it looks like I would only need 8 points per night . At $10/per point it would cost only $80US/nt including tax . Does this make any sense? How can a $259US/nt (rack rate during value season) PLUS tax room go for only $80 including tax???

Am I missing something or confused about something? If NOT, this is definately the way to go, don't you think????

Please give me any advise you can on this. And please tell me the best way to rent the 40 (?) points I would need for 12/2006. Also, when does DVC set the points required for each resort/room type for 12/2006? I wouldn't want to rent points now and then it turns out I would need to get a few more.

Imagine staying in a deluxe for the price of a value. I must be figuring something wrong. If this info. is correct, I wonder how soon and how I could rent points for a 12/2006 vacation.

Your math is basically correct. Yes, you can rent a studio at OKW on points for $80 per night Sunday-Thursday. That's not a mistake.

But you may just not have thought it through far enough . With your dates, you may come out ahead doing the whole vacation on rented points. You only have two weekend nights in there (12/16 & 12/17), and those are 21 points each. You have a total of eight weeknights @ 8 points each, so the total for the whole thing would be 106 points, or about $1060. I doubt that you can beat that, even at a value resort with codes. Disney charges the same rate for all nights, so the overall cost may be far less with points because of the savings on 80% of your room nights.

There can be a fly in the ointment with renting points, however. If you are absolutely sure your plans will not change, points should work well for you.

However, if your plans change, that could cause a big problem both for you and the person who rented you the points. Depending on when your plans changed, they could completely lose the points -- which, of course, they will pass along to you. So you need to have a very clear understanding with the person renting points as to what will happen in the event of a cancellation or change in dates. Many renters use contracts which spell out all of that, and that is helpful to both parties.

Before you do anything, do your homework. Go over to the Rent/Transfer board and read both the "How to use this board - FAQ" and "A Word to the Wise."

riu girl - Welcome to the joys of DVC!!!! Yes, this is exactly what it would cost you to rent those OKW points, in choice season, for a studio. It is, of course, a high-demand time for DVC, but that's not to say you couldn't find someone willing to rent you those points and make the reservation at the 11-month booking window, which OKW owners would have for their resort. The points for 2006 are already posted. They don't change, but the dates of the various seasons change slightly from year to year. The point calculations I gave you above are correct for 2006.

welcome to the world of under-priced dvc points.

For some reason the price per point for dvc has remained relatively flat, while just about everything else has gone up.

right now I dont know how anyone could beat renting points(of course besides owning them)

Wow, I had never really considered this option. I will have to crunch some numbers and see what I can do. If only DH wasn't insisting on going to the Caribbean for our 10th anniversary 12/2005!! If we didn't go, that would really free up some $$ .

I think that 5 nights at a value at $77/nt plus tax (value season) then 5 nights at OKW studio (choice season,8 pts/nt) would still be a little less then the whole vacation at OKW. Plus, by staying at POP first I could save $$ on food since the food court seems cheaper then food at OKW (one sit down and one limited snack bar type restaurant). Unless there are dining options at OKW I don't know about.

Does anyone kow if there is anywhere I could buy easy to prepare food (that only requires a microwave/fridge) at OKW? We wouldn't have a car for this part of our holiday (plan on using DME to get to WDW) but if I could find inexpensive food at OKW...hmmmm. Only 106 points you said. I am still thinking about BCV (because of stormalong bay) and BWV (due to location/price, only 9 points/night). Yikes, so many decisions. But what a great decision to have to make.

Easy to prepare and inexpensive are contradictions IMHO.

Even though you are staying at OKW, you could eat anywhere. You could also place an order with WeGoShop.com and they would do your grocery shopping for you and deliver it to your room.

Thanks for the info. Do you (or anyone else) know if there's anywhere at OKW that you can by food (like at the self-serve large fridges at the value food courts) ex. cut up fruit, sandwiches, juice boxes, subs, desserts, yogurt, etc etc

The store at OKW does have several microwave meals, like lasagna, Boston Market, and so forth. As noted, microwave and cheap do not go together, however. You could rent a car for the day, and stock up at the local Publix, which is what most of us do. If you come in with Tiffany Towne Cars, they will allow you to make a stop on your way to your resort to shop. There is also the shopping service, as mentioned above. They only charge about $5 over the cost of the groceries, unless it has changed in recent years.

The biggest thing to remember is that you are not really renting points. You are paying a DVC member to make a reservation for you. They have complete control over the reservation. You have none. Most owners who make reservations for non-DVC members are totally trustworthy. However, some may not be. It's up to you to find the member you feel comfortable with. You may or may not be able to change or cancel your reservation and get a refund - either full refund or partial refund. It depends on the requirements of the individual who makes the reservation for you. You will need to make sure both you and the DVC member are totally comfortable with the agreement.
