Not even close, buddy.
I think the times people were reporting had to do with the quest "clock" that kept running even when VMK was closed. They started on Saturday and by Monday, their hours spent slaving over this quest, along with the hours when VMK was closed and they were stressing over it anyway, equal the huge amount of hours shown on their quest times.
As far as the Red Sox analogy goes, here's the difference:
Those teams play and win, really win, even if they don't end up with the championship. The champions get more, true, but all those who worked throughout the season have something to show for it.
In this case, those of us who came up short (thanks to the shutting down of the quest early) have NOTHING to show for it (or at least, nothing positive) and were treated by petulant children by Yavn when we expressed our frustration at the change of time.
Closing the quest to players who had not already begun in this case would have worked, because the mules could have been blindsided but not the players already in the thick of things.
So, all things said, it is over, and some people's greed is on display again, but that is nothing new.
The saving grace would be that VMK learned from the experience and put that knowledge to good use, including many of the points you outlined above.
Alas, thanks to the Yavn statement, we know we will get more of the same, or worse, in the months to come.
