Bought a DYSON (DC14 Animal) vaccum today. It is quieter then my old Hoover, however it is NOT more manauverable and won't lay flat to get under the coffee table. Also doesn't have height adjustments and my area rugs don't get a good cleaning. It does not agitate the carpet as well to get all the dirt and pet dander as the Hoover did.

I did try the run-over test. Hoover died after the bedroom and I ran the DYSON in the same bedroom. Didn't pick up a extra speck of dirt.

Sound like a ad for Hoover? It's not. This is the THIRD Hoover to burn up and die in only three years! They might have the carpet cleaning technology down, but until they can actually BUILD a dependable machine I'm going with an alternative. Other choices were Rainbow or Kirby's and price wise the DYSON was cheaper....

Wow, I'm shocked! I love my Dyson!

Are you going to return it?

For what? Been down the road with Bissel and I don't like them. Not going for Hoover again until they get their engineering straightened out.

With two full grown 100lb shepherds and one scared cat I need a beast of a vaccum.

We have an Oreck that I love. Weighs about 8 lbs. Cost us $300 which we paid in 10 payments of $30 each without interest. We could have bought it outright, but as DH said "Why give them more money than we have to if they aren't charging interest on payments".

I have the animal Dyson and absolutely love it. Could you have gotten one with a problem? It can happen with any product. Mine picks up everything.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems.

Very true! I have the animal, too, and with 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 kids, I can't believe what a fantastic job it does. Maybe there's a defect. :confused3

Maybe it has a defect, maybe all the connections are not air tight. Check the owners manuel and make sure all the rubber gaskets, where pieces connect, are clean. As for height adjustment on the Dyson it is automatic so you won't have anything to do there. If you still don't think it has proper suction, compared to what everyone says, take it back for another Dyson, this one may just have a problem.

I'm surprised too -I love my Dyson!! Gets all the Sheltie hair up and right now that little booger is shedding like crazy - the Dyson is getting used quit a bit!

I too have an Animal, have had it for a couple of years now. Mine will make this awful noise when it goes over something on the carpet/rug, Jeff says it's like gears grinding. I know it's supposed to make a sound when something is keeping it from performing properly, but this is terrible. It's usually when it goes over one of those little plastic things that they use to attach price tags to garments. Does anyone elses do this?

There is no comparison in the amount my Dysons pick up in comparison to the Hoovers and Orecks I had previously and I'd never go back, but there are a couple features that I think the Hoover did better. First is unlevel cleaning areas. The Hoover did a much better cleaning the hard surface at the edge of area rugs. The other is the wand. The wand on the Dyson is a PITA! I really miss being able to quickly pull out the wand to hit the baseboards.

I'd take the Dyson you bought back. If you didn't get a whole lotta dust, I can't imagine it's working properly. I also would consider ugrading to the ball. It's a dream to move around.

Really, I would exchange it for another one. The first Dyson we got was a lemon. Sears gave us an extra 10% off for our trouble when we exchanged it. The next one worked great. I can't imagine being without my Dyson for one day.

well if you don't like it definately take it back because that is way too much money to spend on something you don't like.

There have been a couple of threads about this. I've seen some people recommend some of the more "commercial" heavy duty brands like what you'd buy for a hotel. You might want to do a search.

But I agree with the others, I really like my Dyson and I bet I have to empty that canister once a week with all the dirt it picks up.

Let me reiterate. The DYSON does work fine. Just doesn't have all the features that make it more user friendly (I.e low-profile, decent on board tools, height adjustment and carpet agitator(s)).

I believe the Hoover did clean better, but it's just a P-O-S when it comes to dependability. What's the use in buying one if it's gonna burn out on me after one year? :confused3

Did you buy the 14 or the 7? I have the animal 14 and it has carpet adjustment on it and the beater brush agitator. I will say that my Kenmore Progressive Upright with HEPA vac works just as well as the Dyson for a little less money. (and fits under some of my furniture which the Dyson does not do). I like my Dyson, but I don't love it.

It's a 14. I had a Hoover Preferred with twin counter-rotating brushes that were gear driven.

Guess it's a bit of buyer's remoarse. For the $'s spent I was expecting a whoooole lot more.

Never heard of Dyson. I had a Eureka that lasted a long time. Now I have an Oreck and it wonderful...lightweight, fits under and between everything. I flippin love that thing.

Mine does the same noise....it is terrible.....there was a thread a while back about the noise and how to get rid of it (I think you need to adjust or take something off I can't remember and I never did it)....Try searching....

I bought an Animal Dyson and I got a carpet attachment to use on the stairs and furniture and another one that goes under the furniture. I LOVE mine, my house has never looked better. I can go more than 7 days without vacuuming, I could never go more than 4 with the Hoover. I killed two Hoovers and an electrolux with all the cat hair in my house!
My Mom is on her second Oreck and she loves it. They do not have pets, so I don't know how good they are with animal hair.

I have a Sanitare that I like (kind of like an old fashioned hotel vacumm)

Thanks for the heads up, I plan on calling tomorrow. My DD actually throws it down and walks away from it screaming I hate this vacuum cleaner!
