Borrowing question...I don't know answer to hubby's question!

Hi there,

I have a borrowing question. It doesn't actually apply to us right now , but my hubby asked and I didn't have a definative answer. We are booked for Dec. 30, 2008, and we borrowed some points from 2009 use year to make booking. We have Dec. use year. I realize that borrowing points causes them to be placed in the use year from which travel is booked, right? So points were moved to 2008 use year, which begins for us in Dec. Now, if we had to cancel, those points stay in 2008, got it. BUT if we were to want to travel before Dec. 1, can those points be borrowed into this current use year? Am I making any sense?

If I am understanding you correctly, no. If you borrowed 2009 points for a reservation on Dec. 30, 2008, and cancel, you can use those borrowed points anytime during your 2008 UY. Those borrowed points can not be re-borrowed into 2007 UY.

Your question makes perfect sense.

The answer however is no.

Your use year is December. So your 'years' go from Dec 1st to Nov 30th. You are currently in your 2007 use year, which goes to Nov 30th, 2008.

A vacation in Dec 2008 requires 2008 use year points. You borrowed points from your Dec 2009 use year. They move into your 2008 use year, but are designated as 'borrowed' points. This differentiates them from your regular 2008 use year points.

Points can only be borrowed from a single year ahead. A vacation this year, prior to December, would require 2007 use year points. You could borrow regular 2008 use year points. You cannot 'borrow' 2008 borrowed points.

Just FYI, there are several designations for points, all which have specific conditions on their usage. These are:

1. Regular annual allocation points
2. Borrowed Points
3. Banked Points
4. Holding Points
5. Reservation Points
6. Developer Points
7. Transferred Points

Only Regular Points can be banked or borrowed.

Transferred Points can be banked, but not borrowed.

Points with any other status cannot be banked or borrowed.

Hopefully this all makes sense.

If you only used Dec 2009 points for your Dec 2008 trip, they could not be used before Dec 2008. But if you also used Dec 2008 points for your Dec 2008 trip, you could borrow the Dec 2008 points into the Dec 2007 year (which ends on Nov 30, 2008).

But Dec 2009 points could not be used for a reservation that ended prior to Dec 1, 2008.
