Borrowing Points restriction

Hey all!

hoping for some advice in navigating the new restriction that states you can’t borrow more than 50% of your points currently for reservations.

we purchased enough points to allow my family that needs a 2 bedroom to go every other year fora week. If I am reading this policy correctly, I don’t think we are able to book that without having the reservation then auto cancelled. Does that sound right?

not sure how to navigate this. Do I just book the length of stay At our home resort that i can with this limitation and hope something changes and I can add additional days?

or do I wait until the booking window opens to see if there is availability at a resort that has a lower point chart? We are 2 cancelled trips in at this point and trying to avoid going through the whole process again if it doesn’t work out.

shooting for November 2021.

Thanks all, stay safe out there!

I don't understand what you want.
Details please. Home resort, # of points you have, when you want to travel. unit size....

It sounds like the member bought enough points so that banking the points allowed her a 2 BR villa every two years, Which assumes that she banked her points one year and used banked and current points to secure the reservation.

Now with the banked points restriction she can no longer do that. Assuming the 50% banking restriction stays in place pretty much the options are only

1 - Look for a 'cheaper' resort
2 - do a longer trip every 3 years
3 - Go on the rental section and find someone willing to transfer in points and rent out the remaining banked points to pay for transferred points
4 - Say 'Thanks for the Memories' and sell DVC contract.

You won’t even be able to borrow too many points. The online system caps your borrowing at 50% of the total number of points in each contract.

We’re all in uncharted territory here. We decided to skip any trips during our upcoming UY and bank those points. The next UY, we won’t have to borrow. If you don’t want to forego a trip next year, then your only options are to:
  • Shorten your visit
  • Stay at a resort that costs fewer points
  • Get a transfer of points from another member to complete your reservation
  • Get another member to book the nights you need.

@ford91exploder - it’s borrowing that has the restricti, on. Banking is 100% available.

As I recall banked points usage is ALSO restricted, Could be wrong,

The problem is now more points are available for use than there are accomodations available for rental via points. I was kind of hoping Disney would cancel the 'excess' points in exchange for a one time reduction or elimination of MF's for 2020. so that 2021 could open on a 'clean' slate.

I expect Nov. 2021 to be busy with fall frenzy and the 50th. I would start by booking what you can at your 11-month window. Then I would see what I could switch into that requires less points at 7 months. AKV might have availability then. Kidani 1-bedrooms have two bathrooms if you can’t get a 2-bedroom. I think it’s going to be an awesome time to go and totally worth trying.

Good luck!

Deb

I would book what you can using the points you have available with the 50% limit.

Then, if the rule changes or a room for less points is available at 7 months, you can adjust the trip.

The only change for points that had already been banked from 2018 were extended so they could be used by November 30th, even if they expired prior to that. They could not be used online.

Other than that, all banking policies remained intact.

Thanks for all of the replies. We have only ever stayed at our home resort, wilderness lodge, since purchasing DVC. This would only be our second trip as members and a lot to navigate with the changes. I think we will put the days we can in at the wilderness lodge and go from there. If it doesn’t turn out we can get a full week I’ll probably take the cue from marionette and try to find the patience to just wait for 2022. Too much to haul down 2 toddlers for a long weekend haha.

What is this “banked points” phrase you all speak of? 🤣
I have been a member for 12 years and I never leave one point in my UY 🥴🤣

Although we also book two bedrooms for 4 people, with toddlers, and with your wanting to go to Disney, I would just adjust your lodging and go with a studio or one bedroom to get a full week.

Copper Creek or Boulder Ridge? I know CCV has a limitation for four in the studio and one bedroom, but BRV can sleep five authentically in the studio with the murphy bed and unofficially with the one bedroom (but you provide the bed and bedding). Unless you have six and then you are in a pickle.

You can bank all your 2020 points to add to your 2021 points as originally planned, the 50% restriction is on borrowed points.

I don't see the point borrowing restrictions ending until 2022 at the earliest, there are obviously a ton of banked points in the system from canceled reservations.. I have a June use year and 345 points, all of my 2020 points have been banked. Hopefully, once travel picks up again, people will book longer trips or larger accommodations to use them up. With these banked points, I won't need to borrow a bunch, like I had originally planned, for a big group trip for Thanksgiving 2021. I only need to borrow 19 of my 2022 points for 7 nights in a GV for part of the party, and 7 nights in a two bedroom lock off for the rest of the group. I still have 46 points banked from 2019 that have to be used or lost by June 1. I haven't decided what to do with those, yet.

Hopefully there will some good choices for you! Even with the extra points some may have from cancelled trips the GVs and 2 BR will be out of reach for some with the borrowing restriction.

I ended up booking booking 2 studios at BR this morning. It’s not ideal, but we travel with the grandparents and this was the only way to ensure everyone has a place to stay with the 2 BR not an option at this points with the borrowing restriction.

hopefully, at the 7 month window, we can snag a 2 bedroom at AKL or OKW but at least WE ARE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD.

Honestly my parents might not hate being further down the hall from us haha.

now I have to help my mother in law who has a ton of points at the boardwalk to use. We never seem to have success getting her into WL or us into Boardwalk at 7 months under normal circumstances so I’m not betting on it with these sets of circumstances.
Love these boards- thanks for all of your insights!
