Borrowing points- modify?

Hello Again! I am thinking of borrowing points from 2024 use year (March) for a February weekend trip. Two questions: 1. Can i modify a reservation with borrowed points. Also, do I lose points if I cancel February trip with borrowed points?

Yes, you can modify a reservation that has borrowed points.

If you cancel a reservation that has borrowed points, those points can’t be put back and stay in the UY of the trip. If you can’t use them by the end of that UY, you’ll lose them.

As pp said,,,,you will lose them. If you Borrow from March 2024 for a Feb trip,,that is in your 2023 UY. If you cancel you would need to use them by the end of Feb 2023 or lose them....

The basic rule is points can only ever move once.

Once points are banked or borrowed into a different Use Year, they are stuck there forever and must be used by the end of that window.

Very risky to borrow points for the last month of a UY since there is nothing you can do with them yourself if you cancel. Your only recourse would be to not cancel and try to rent it as a confirmed reservation to at least get some money for it.

Sorry! I'm a little confused. I bought my first DVC contract direct at VGF back in May. I chose the magical beginnings promotion so I had to borrow from my Oct 2023 use year for my recent trip this month. In trying to modify my booking reservation, I messed up my points by canceling. I called member services and they moved my points back to 2023. If I'm following what you all are suggesting correctly, my error should have caused those points to remain to be used before the start of my October 2023 use year since I was borrowing from a future use year and before those points would normally be genrated for me?

Was member services moving points back to use year 2023 out of the norm, or am I just not understanding correctly? Thanks!

You got some pixie dust from them! It was probably because you are a new owner and they wanted to help out. What they did for you was definitely not the way it works.

Once borrowed, points can not go back to their original UY. That is why one always has to take that into consideration when you book trips and how long you would have to use up points from a canceled reservation.

Since you are new, be aware that any cancellation within 31 days of arrival, no matter when the trip is, results in points going into holding status...it restricts them even more. They can no longer be banked, even if the banking window, and they can only be used for trips that you make 60 days or less from check in, and will expire at the end of the UY of the trip.
