I'm trying to figure out if the controlling date for borrowing points is the date of booking or the date of travel.

We are in an August-July use year.

As of August 1, 2008 we will have 118 point for 8/08-7/09 and the ability to borrow 160 from 8/09 - for a total of 278 available. Assume we bank the remaining 8/08 points.

We want to do a "Grand Villa" trip for our kids and grandkids for our Anniversary in August of 2009 and figure we'll need about 400 point to make it work.

If on August 1, 2009 we book a trip for 8/15/09-8/22/09 we would have 118 banked from 2008, 160 from 8/2009 and 160 to borrow from 8/2010 for a total of 438. But of course waiting until two weeks before travel is not practical.

So - if we book in say January of '09 for August 15 of 2009, can we used the points we would have based on the time of the trip, or only based on the time of booking?

I know it's confusing but . . . .

Thanks!

You can use all of those points (assuming we are talking about your home resort!) 11 months ahead of the time you will be staying in the unit. As long as the points will all be available by the time you take your vacation, you can book the trip 11 months ahead of time. You can begin to book your trip September 16, 2008 for a stay on August 15, 2009 - that's 11 months ahead of the check out day of your first date.

Remember the new banking deadlines and bank those 118 August 2008 Use Year points by the end of March 2009!!

My understanding is that points are allocated based on when your reservations occur, so you could book August 2009 starting in September 2008. You could then use your banked 08 points, your 2009 points and borrow from 2010 since the reservation would be in your 2009 UY.

You're welcome!!! Also, you might want to call day by day to make those reservations. So call September 16, 2008 for the reservation for August 15, 2009, call September 17, 2008 for the reservation for August 16, 2009, and so forth. Grand Villas are very much sought after, so I would call each day. That way you are ahead of the people who want a Grand Villa the same week you do but only want to make one phone call to get it. If you tell the Member Services person that you will be calling day by day they will usually try to be aware of it and link the reservations together, etc. It's a small precaution to help you get what you want more easily!!!!!

If you'll tell us your home resort someone may be able to tell you how much availability there is likely to be. I don't know much about them myself but someone will!!!!

Also, I hope I don't have to remind you that you should send your wife some flowers while you are there....:rolleyes1 :rotfl:

I send my wife flowers EVERY time we are at WDW. I'm no fool

Our home resort is Animal Kingdom.

Thanks again for all the tips!

If you are at AKV I would DEFINITELY call day by day. It's a new resort and I'm not sure how many GVs will be available.

And your wife might like a spa visit to celebrate that anniversary, too. I'm just sayin'...:rotfl:

As other have said, you should be fine. What you need to remember is that you need the points in the use year you take the vacation not the use year you make the reservation. So, you would bank the 118 points from 2008 to 2009. You would also borrow 122 from 2010 back into 2009 giving you the 400 points you need for your vacation.

Yep, I am with you on that.Send me to the spa and I am a happy girl.

Oh, that's a good point - don't just randomly borrow ALL of your 2010 points into 2009 - if you don't need all of them for your reservation. The MS person will just borrow when he/shee needs them for the last few days of your reservation. I think they will automatically use banked points first, then current ones, before they borrow.

Thanks everyone - very helpful to this new DVC member!

I'm logging off and will be away for a day - so don't think me rude for not replying to further advice - I'll look at it on Friday night

Just FYI, members cannot borrow points UNLESS they are actually making a reservation that will use them. So there's no danger of borrowing points you may or may not need.

The only way "unused" or "uncommitted" borrowed points get into your account is if you cancel a reservation that was made with them

MS won't make separate reservations and link them , they will start a reservation and add to it each day , closing it out the last day you want. Making it all one reservation.
